Chapter 9: The Warehouse Trap

Chapter 9: The Warehouse Trap
The abandoned warehouse stood at the edge of the industrial district.
Ortiz ordered Ryan not to go.
He went anyway.
This time, he did not bring Maya.
He asked her to remain at the hospital with Oliver, surrounded by police.
Ortiz followed Ryan with two unmarked vehicles.
Inside the warehouse, rows of broken machinery disappeared into darkness.
A young security technician named Noah Pierce waited near the loading dock.
He held a portable hard drive.
“I maintained the cameras in your mother’s homes,” Noah said. “She required automatic backups.”
“Why contact me?”
“Because I watched the nursery footage.”
Noah handed him the drive.
“Your mother knew the boy could not breathe. She counted the minutes.”
Ryan’s hand tightened around the device.
Before they could leave, the warehouse doors slammed shut.
The lights went out.
Ortiz shouted from outside.
A vehicle crashed through the side entrance.
Two masked men emerged from behind the machinery.
Ryan and Noah ran.
One attacker grabbed Noah.
Ryan struck the man with a metal chain and pulled Noah free.
A second attacker fired toward them.
The bullet shattered a control panel.
Sparks rained across the floor.
Ortiz and her officers broke through the loading door.
The attackers fled toward the rear exit.
One was captured.
The other escaped.
The arrested man carried a phone containing a single recent message.
RECOVER THE DRIVE. NO WITNESSES.
The sender was listed only as E.W.
At the hospital, Ortiz played the recovered nursery recording for Ryan and Maya.
The video began thirty minutes before Ryan arrived.
Evelyn stood beside Oliver’s crib holding his inhaler.
Maya begged her to return it.
Evelyn placed the inhaler inside her handbag.
“Sign the documents,” she said.
“He cannot breathe.”
“He is uncomfortable, not dying.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know exactly how long he can tolerate an episode. I spoke with his doctor.”
When Maya tried to take the bag, Evelyn shoved her into the dresser.
Maya’s nose began bleeding.
Then Evelyn knocked over the lamp herself.
The video captured everything.
It also captured Evelyn speaking into her phone after Maya fell.
“Ryan is almost home,” she said. “Prepare the custody order.”
Ryan believed they had finally won.
Then Ortiz’s phone rang.
The color left her face.
“What happened?” Maya asked.
Ortiz looked at them.
“The district attorney assigned to the case has declined to charge Evelyn.”
“Why?”
“He says the video may have been manipulated.”
Ryan stared at her in disbelief.

Evelyn was not defending herself anymore.
She was controlling the investigation.
