Chapter 5: The Woman Who Vanished

Chapter 5: The Woman Who Vanished
Grace Holloway had once been the person Evelyn trusted most.
She managed Evelyn’s schedule.
She answered private calls.
She handled confidential payments through the family foundation.
Then one morning, she disappeared.
Evelyn told everyone Grace had stolen seventy thousand dollars and fled the country.
Ryan had believed her.
He had been preparing for his wedding to Maya and paid little attention to his mother’s staff.
Now he remembered something.
Grace had called him the night before she vanished.
He had ignored the call.
Ryan searched his old cloud backups.
After several hours, he found a voicemail.
Grace’s voice was low and frightened.
“Ryan, I need to speak with you about your mother. It concerns Maya. Please do not tell Evelyn I called.”
The message ended with a sudden noise.
A door opening.
Grace whispering, “She’s here.”
Then silence.
Detective Ortiz traced Grace’s last known address to a coastal town three hours away.
She lived under her middle name and worked at a small accounting office.
When Ryan and Ortiz arrived, Grace tried to close the door.
“We only want to talk,” Ryan said.
Grace’s face had changed, but the fear in her eyes had not.
“You should not have come.”
“My mother tried to take my son.”
Grace looked toward the quiet street.
“She will do worse if she knows you found me.”
Inside, Grace revealed the truth.
Evelyn had paid Dr. Vale to monitor Maya from the beginning of her marriage to Ryan.
She believed Maya came from the wrong family and had married Ryan for his money.
When Oliver was born, Evelyn became obsessed with raising him as a “true Whitmore.”
“She wanted custody before he was six months old,” Grace said. “Dr. Vale refused to create a false diagnosis at first.”
“What changed?” Maya asked.
“Evelyn found out he had been stealing prescription medication from his clinic. She threatened to expose him.”
Grace had discovered the payments and copied the records.
When Evelyn learned what she had done, she framed Grace for theft.
“Why didn’t you go to the police?” Ryan asked.
“I tried.”
Grace opened a drawer and removed a photograph of a wrecked car.
“My brother was forced off the road the day after I contacted a detective.”
Ryan stared at the crushed vehicle.
“He survived,” Grace said. “But Evelyn sent me the hospital bill with one sentence written across it.”
She handed Ryan the faded paper.
NEXT TIME, HE WILL NOT.
Grace had spent four years hiding.
Before Ryan could respond, a window shattered.
Ortiz pushed everyone to the floor.

Someone outside had already found them.
