Chapter 12: The Hunt for Evelyn

Chapter 12: The Hunt for Evelyn

Evelyn’s private plane was preparing to depart from Whitmore Airfield.

Federal agents reached the runway minutes before takeoff.

The plane was empty.

Evelyn had used it as a distraction.

Her driver was found unconscious in a parking garage.

His uniform and identification were missing.

Security footage showed Evelyn leaving in the driver’s clothes.

For the first time in her life, she had abandoned elegance for survival.

News organizations finally aired the nursery video.

Public opinion changed overnight.

The woman once praised as the city’s greatest philanthropist became the center of a national scandal.

The Whitmore Foundation’s board suspended her.

Banks froze her accounts.

Former employees began contacting investigators.

Each told a similar story.

Evelyn collected secrets.

She created debts.

She destroyed anyone who threatened her control.

Judge Caldwell was arrested after investigators discovered payments hidden through the foundation.

Caroline admitted that Evelyn had promised her custody of Oliver.

She claimed she believed Maya was genuinely dangerous.

Ryan did not know whether to believe her.

Dr. Vale was found at a bus station under a false name.

He had escaped custody after receiving a message claiming Grace had been killed.

He surrendered when Ortiz showed him Grace was alive.

His testimony connected Evelyn to the altered records, the forged order, and Charles Whitmore’s death.

Still, Evelyn remained missing.

Three days passed.

Oliver returned home with Ryan and Maya.

The nursery remained sealed as a crime scene, so they slept together in the downstairs guest room.

Ryan woke before dawn to find Maya standing by the window.

“Do you think she will come back?” Maya asked.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she cannot accept that she lost.”

At breakfast, Oliver pushed toy cars across the table.

For the first time since the hospital, he laughed.

The sound filled the house.

Then the security alarm went off.

Ryan grabbed Oliver.

Maya called the police.

A motion sensor had detected movement in the nursery.

Officers searched the room.

No one was there.

But something had been placed inside the crib.

It was Ryan’s childhood photograph.

He was six years old, standing beside his father at Briar Hill.

Across Charles Whitmore’s face, someone had drawn a black line.

On the back, Evelyn had written:

HE TRIED TO TAKE MY FAMILY TOO.

Beneath the photograph was a key.

Ryan recognized it.

It opened his father’s private vault beneath Whitmore Tower.
