Chapter 6: The House on Briar Hill

Chapter 6: The House on Briar Hill
Detective Ortiz called for backup while Ryan dragged Maya and Grace behind the kitchen counter.
A second shot tore through the front door.
Then an engine roared outside.
By the time officers arrived, the shooter was gone.
A traffic camera captured a black SUV leaving the street.
It was registered to a security company contracted by the Whitmore Foundation.
Evelyn denied knowing anything about the attack.
Her attorneys claimed the vehicle had been stolen.
Grace agreed to enter protective custody.
Before leaving, she gave Ryan a flash drive.
“I copied everything I could before I ran.”
The files contained foundation payments, private investigator reports, and recordings of conversations between Evelyn and Dr. Vale.
One recording changed everything.
Evelyn’s voice was unmistakable.
“Maya does not need to be permanently injured. She needs to appear dangerous. The child must be present, and Ryan must arrive afterward.”
Vale answered, “You are asking me to manufacture a crisis.”
“I am asking you to protect my family.”
Another file referred repeatedly to Briar Hill.
Ryan recognized the name.
It was the country estate where he had spent his childhood summers.
The property had been abandoned after his father’s death.
According to the documents, Evelyn had used the house for private meetings with Vale and several family attorneys.
Ryan decided to go there before Evelyn could remove the remaining evidence.
Ortiz objected, but the search warrant would take hours.
Ryan refused to wait.
He drove through heavy rain to the estate with Maya beside him.
The old house stood beyond rusted gates and overgrown hedges.
Inside, dust covered the furniture.
The air smelled of damp wood and forgotten rooms.
They found the study locked.
Ryan broke the door open.
The room contained filing cabinets, recording equipment, and dozens of boxes labeled with names.
Some belonged to former employees.
Others belonged to distant relatives.
Every person had challenged Evelyn at some point.
Every box contained secrets that could be used against them.
Maya found a folder bearing Ryan’s name.
Inside were reports on his friendships, romantic relationships, and financial decisions dating back to college.
His mother had watched him for nearly twenty years.
Then Ryan found another folder.
It belonged to his father, Charles Whitmore.
The final page contained a medical report written two days before Charles died.
It said his heart medication had been changed without authorization.
The physician listed on the report was Dr. Samuel Vale.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Ryan froze.
They were not alone in the house.
