Chapter 3: The Perfect Mother

Chapter 3: The Perfect Mother
Evelyn Whitmore was released that night while investigators reviewed the evidence.
She left the police station through the front entrance.
By morning, local reporters were waiting outside the Whitmore estate.
Evelyn stood before them wearing a dark blue coat and an expression of wounded dignity.
“My only concern has always been my grandson,” she said.
She claimed the situation had been misunderstood.
She suggested that Maya’s emotional condition had worsened after Oliver’s birth.
She never directly accused Maya of violence.
She did something more dangerous.
She implied it.
Within hours, headlines described the incident as a family dispute.
Television commentators questioned whether the hidden camera had been installed to protect Oliver.
Anonymous sources claimed Maya had a history of instability.
Ryan watched the coverage from Oliver’s hospital room.
His mother had transformed herself from suspect to concerned grandmother before breakfast.
“She has friends everywhere,” Maya said quietly.
Ryan turned off the television.
“She has people who owe her favors.”
For decades, Evelyn had chaired charities, funded hospitals, and hosted political dinners.
Her family foundation supported half the institutions in the city.
She knew judges.
She knew police commissioners.
She knew which reporters needed exclusive invitations.
But Ryan knew something else.
His mother hated losing control.
That evening, Evelyn called him.
Ryan almost ignored it.
Then he answered and placed the phone on speaker.
“Ryan,” Evelyn said softly. “Come home so we can discuss this privately.”
“There is nothing to discuss.”
“You are frightened and confused.”
“My son could have died.”
“Maya created that danger.”
Ryan looked at his wife.
Maya sat beside Oliver’s bed, holding his hand.
“You took his inhaler.”
“I removed an object she was using irresponsibly.”
“You forged my signature.”
Silence followed.
Then Evelyn sighed.
“You have no idea what she has hidden from you.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You think the documents were about taking Oliver away.”
“They were.”
“No, Ryan.”
Her voice became colder.
“They were about preventing Maya from taking him away from you.”
The line disconnected.
Minutes later, Detective Ortiz entered the room carrying an evidence bag.
Inside was a memory card recovered from the nursery camera.
“The recording was damaged,” she said. “Someone attempted to erase it.”
“Can you recover it?”
“Our technicians are trying.”
Ortiz placed a printed image on the table.
It was a single surviving frame from the video.
The image showed Evelyn standing beside the crib.
Behind her, reflected in the nursery mirror, was another person.
A man holding a medical bag.
Ryan recognized him immediately.
