Chapter 14: Every Lie Falls

Chapter 14: Every Lie Falls
The command center fell into absolute silence.
Every monitor still displayed the frozen image of the mysterious woman.
Elegant.
Confident.
Untouchable.
Marcus couldn't take his eyes off the screen.
"Who is she?"
No one answered immediately.
Even Evelyn Cross seemed shaken.
Rachel Kane finally broke the silence.
"You know her."
Evelyn slowly nodded.
"I prayed I would never see her again."
Arthur looked at the screen.
"Tell us."
Evelyn took a long breath.
"Her name is Victoria Ashford."
Marcus frowned.
"I've never heard of her."
"You weren't supposed to."
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
"Twenty-two years ago, Victoria was one of the youngest genetic researchers in Project Genesis."
Daniel immediately searched the archives.
A personnel file appeared.
Dr. Victoria Ashford
Chief Genetic Analyst.
Security Clearance: Level Omega.
Employment Status...
Deceased.
Laura Bennett looked confused.
"She's officially dead."
Evelyn nodded.
"Because William declared her dead."
Marcus looked up sharply.
"My father?"
"He had no choice."
Twenty-Two Years Earlier...
Sterling Research Institute.
A newborn baby cried inside an isolation nursery.
Victoria Ashford stood beside the incubator, tears streaming down her face.
William Thorne entered quietly.
"The treatment worked."
Victoria looked at the infant.
"My daughter survived."
William smiled.
"She did."
"But Genesis also changed her."
Victoria gently touched the baby's tiny hand.
"Will she be normal?"
William hesitated.
"I don't know."
That single answer changed everything.
Within weeks, government officials demanded custody of the child.
Private corporations offered billions to acquire the research.
Military contractors wanted access to the infant.
William refused all of them.
Then one night...
Victoria disappeared.
Official records stated she had died in a laboratory explosion.
Only three people knew the truth.
William.
Evelyn.
Arthur.
They had helped Victoria escape with her daughter.
Present Day...
Arthur lowered his head.
"I lied."
Marcus looked at him.
"You protected them."
Arthur nodded.
"We thought no one would ever find them."
Evelyn whispered,
"We were wrong."
Daniel continued searching the archives.
"I found the daughter's file."
Everyone turned.
He clicked the encrypted record.
The screen displayed only one line.
Subject Zero
Status...
Unknown.
No photograph.
No address.
No identity.
Victoria had erased every trace.
Rachel folded her arms.
"Then how did she build this organization?"
Evelyn answered quietly.
"Fear."
Marcus looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
"When governments realized Genesis had vanished..."
"They never stopped searching."
"Victoria spent twenty-two years building powerful allies."
Laura frowned.
"Using Genesis?"
"No."
Evelyn's voice grew heavy.
"Using people who wanted Genesis."
Suddenly...
Daniel's computer emitted another alert.
An encrypted bank account had just become active.
Rachel stepped closer.
"Can you trace it?"
Daniel nodded.
"It's moving money."
Marcus frowned.
"How much?"
Daniel stared at the screen.
"Over three billion dollars."
Arthur's face hardened.
"That's not ransom money."
Laura nodded.
"That's funding."
Daniel followed the transfers.
Dozens of shell companies.
Private military contractors.
Research laboratories.
Political organizations.
Everything pointed toward one destination.
An offshore medical complex in the North Atlantic.
Rachel enlarged the satellite image.
An isolated island.
Hidden beneath heavy cloud cover.
No public records.
No registered owner.
Marcus whispered,
"That's where she is."
At that same moment...
Victoria Ashford stood inside a vast underground laboratory.
Floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooked state-of-the-art research facilities.
Scientists hurried through spotless corridors.
Security teams guarded every entrance.
Victoria calmly watched a live ultrasound on a massive screen.
Khloe.
Thirty-two weeks pregnant.
The baby's heartbeat echoed softly.
A young woman entered the laboratory.
She looked about twenty-two years old.
Intelligent.
Calm.
Her green eyes resembled Victoria's.
"Mother."
Victoria smiled warmly.
"There you are."
The young woman looked at the ultrasound.
"So that's him."
Victoria nodded.
"The final piece."
The young woman remained silent.
Finally...
She asked the question Victoria had feared for years.
"Do we really have to take the baby?"
Victoria looked away.
"If we don't..."
"The cure dies forever."
The young woman whispered,
"Or maybe..."
"...we've become the disease."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
Back inside Sentinel Headquarters...
Khloe quietly listened as Marcus explained everything.
When he finished...
She sat silently for nearly a minute.
Then she asked,
"So..."
"Our son isn't just our son anymore?"
Marcus knelt beside her.
"He has always been our son."
Khloe placed both hands over her stomach.
"I don't care what Genesis is."
"I don't care what my child carries."
She looked directly into Marcus's eyes.
"I will never let anyone treat him like an experiment."
Marcus nodded.
"Neither will I."
Rachel entered.
"We've identified the island."
Marcus stood.
"We're going."
Laura interrupted.
"With what?"
Rachel smiled slightly.
"We still have one advantage."
Everyone looked at her.
"Victoria believes we're trying to protect Genesis."
Marcus frowned.
"We are."
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
"We're protecting a family."
"That changes everything."
Meanwhile...
Inside a secure detention center outside New York...
A nurse entered an isolated medical room.
The patient lay unconscious.
Multiple fractures.
Internal bleeding.
Identity...
Isabella Rossi.
She had survived the warehouse.
Survived the motel attack.
Now she lay under constant police guard.
The nurse quietly approached.
Checked the monitors.
Then removed a syringe from her pocket.
Not medicine.
Poison.
She slowly inserted the needle into the IV line.
A calm voice spoke behind her.
"I wouldn't do that."
The nurse froze.
Detective Laura Bennett stepped from the shadows.
Four armed officers surrounded the room.
The nurse smiled.
"You knew."
Laura nodded.
"We've been waiting."
The nurse slowly removed her surgical mask.
Marcus stared in disbelief.
Standing before them...
Was the hospital administrator who had secretly warned the kidnappers.
The mole.
He calmly raised both hands.
"You'll never stop her."
Laura handcuffed him.
"We'll see."
As officers escorted him away...
He laughed.
"You still don't understand."
Marcus grabbed him by the collar.
"Understand what?"
The man smiled through bloodied lips.
"Victoria doesn't want your son..."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
The mole whispered one final sentence.
"She wants..."
"...his mother."
Silence.
Marcus slowly released him.
Khloe.
Not the baby.
Not Genesis.
Khloe.
Rachel's expression suddenly changed.
She looked toward Evelyn.
"You knew."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Tears rolled silently down her face.
"Yes."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Tell me."
Evelyn whispered,
"Khloe wasn't chosen because she loved you."
Marcus felt his heart stop.
"Then why?"
Evelyn looked directly at him.
"Because Khloe..."
"...was the only person on Earth whose DNA could safely complete Genesis."
Before anyone could react...
Every light inside headquarters flickered once more.
Daniel's voice echoed through the speakers.
"Marcus!"
He ran into the room.
"They've launched something."
"What?"
Daniel enlarged a satellite feed.
A private jet had just departed the island.
Destination...
New York.
Estimated arrival...
Two hours.
Marcus looked at Rachel.
Rachel looked back.
Neither needed to speak.
The war was no longer coming.
May you like
It was already in the air.
