Chapter 6: The Sentinel Protocol

Chapter 6: The Sentinel Protocol

The encrypted message reached six secure devices across New York.

No names.

No explanations.

Only four words appeared on every screen.

Protect the Thorne Heir.

For ordinary people, it meant nothing.

For the six recipients...

It meant everything.

Within thirty seconds, every one of them was moving.

Marcus stood inside Sterling Memorial Hospital's command center, staring at the frozen image of Khloe on the monitor.

The twenty-four-hour countdown continued to tick.

23:58:41

Detective Laura Bennett folded her arms.

"You can't seriously be thinking of negotiating."

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he watched the timer.

"They're professionals."

Laura frowned.

"So?"

"If they wanted Khloe dead..."

He pointed at the screen.

"...they wouldn't have sent this."

Arthur Sterling nodded slowly.

"They need something."

Marcus looked at him.

"And people who need something make mistakes."

Laura sighed.

"Unless they're using the ransom to buy time."

Marcus turned toward Daniel Brooks.

"Trace the upload."

Daniel was already working.

"I've tried."

"They bounced the signal through twelve countries."

Marcus wasn't surprised.

"They planned that too."

Daniel nodded.

"But..."

Marcus looked up.

"What?"

"I found something they probably didn't expect."

Daniel enlarged a network log.

"The upload lasted nine seconds longer than necessary."

Laura leaned closer.

"Meaning?"

"The sender stayed connected."

Marcus immediately understood.

"They left a footprint."

Daniel smiled.

"A very small one."

Thirty minutes later...

An armored black SUV rolled into the underground garage.

Its license plates were government-issued.

No logos.

No markings.

The driver stepped out first.

A woman in her late thirties.

Short black hair.

Gray eyes.

Dark tactical suit.

She walked directly toward Marcus.

"Rachel Kane."

She extended her hand.

Marcus shook it once.

"Thank you for coming."

Rachel glanced toward the countdown on the monitor.

"We came because your father once saved every member of my team."

Marcus looked surprised.

"He never told me."

Rachel smiled faintly.

"He wasn't the type to brag."

Five more individuals entered behind her.

A former Marine sniper.

A cyber intelligence specialist.

A forensic tracker.

An emergency trauma surgeon.

A surveillance expert.

Together...

They formed the Sentinel Team.

Officially...

They didn't exist.

Laura watched them carefully.

"I've never heard of your organization."

Rachel answered calmly.

"You were never supposed to."

Arthur stepped forward.

"My hospital is under police jurisdiction."

Rachel nodded politely.

"And we're not replacing the police."

She looked directly at Laura.

"We're here to find Khloe before the countdown reaches zero."

Laura studied her for several seconds.

Then slowly nodded.

"Fine."

"But we work together."

Rachel smiled.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

Across the city...

Inside the abandoned warehouse...

Khloe slowly opened her eyes.

The room smelled of rust and engine oil.

Heavy chains hung from the ceiling.

Dust floated through narrow beams of sunlight.

Her wrists were no longer tied.

Instead...

One ankle was secured to a steel support column with a reinforced restraint.

She carefully touched her stomach.

A tiny kick answered.

Relief flooded through her.

"Our little fighter..."

she whispered.

The baby was still alive.

The warehouse door opened.

Dr. Ethan Harrison entered carrying a medical case.

He looked exhausted.

He avoided eye contact.

Khloe stared at him.

"You delivered hundreds of babies."

He remained silent.

"You promised to protect mothers."

Still nothing.

She whispered,

"Why are you doing this?"

Ethan slowly sat across from her.

For the first time...

He looked ashamed.

"It wasn't supposed to happen this way."

Khloe narrowed her eyes.

"What wasn't?"

He hesitated.

"They only wanted Marcus."

Khloe's heartbeat quickened.

"What do you mean?"

Before Ethan could answer...

The warehouse door slammed open.

Isabella Rossi entered wearing a cream-colored business suit.

Gone was the glamorous woman from the gala.

Now she looked like an executive.

Confident.

Calculated.

She smiled.

"Doctor..."

Ethan immediately stood.

"You've said enough."

Isabella walked toward Khloe.

"You always were too curious."

Khloe refused to lower her gaze.

"You'll never win."

Isabella laughed softly.

"You still think this is about stealing your husband."

She leaned closer.

"It never was."

Back at the hospital...

Daniel projected Thorne Biotech's corporate structure onto a large screen.

Rachel studied it carefully.

"Who inherits Marcus's controlling shares?"

Marcus answered.

"My son."

Laura looked confused.

"The baby isn't even born."

Arthur quietly explained.

"Marcus transferred the voting rights into an irrevocable family trust six months ago."

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

"So if Khloe and the baby die..."

Marcus finished the sentence.

"The trust becomes inactive."

Daniel typed rapidly.

"The shares return to temporary board control."

Rachel looked toward Arthur.

"Who becomes interim chairman?"

Arthur's expression darkened.

"Marcus's cousin."

Marcus slowly nodded.

"Damien Thorne."

Silence filled the room.

Laura frowned.

"Where is he now?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"London."

Daniel looked at another screen.

"No..."

Everyone turned toward him.

Daniel swallowed.

"His private jet landed in New York..."

He checked the timestamp.

"...three hours before the attack."

Rachel immediately stood.

"Find him."

Daniel frowned.

"We don't know where he went after landing."

Rachel smiled slightly.

"I think I do."

She looked at Marcus.

"Where would a man hide..."

"...if everyone expected him to be somewhere else?"

Marcus didn't answer.

Then suddenly...

His expression changed.

"The old Thorne estate."

Arthur looked surprised.

"The mansion outside the city?"

Marcus nodded.

"No one's lived there since my father died."

Rachel turned toward her team.

"We're moving."

Meanwhile...

Inside the warehouse...

Khloe quietly watched Isabella.

"You hate me."

Isabella smiled.

"I envy you."

"There is a difference."

Khloe remained calm.

"You could have built your own life."

"I tried."

Isabella's smile vanished.

"For fifteen years."

Her voice became colder.

"I built companies."

"I built reputations."

"I built fortunes."

"And every time..."

She stepped closer.

"...Marcus still looked at you."

Khloe shook her head.

"So this is revenge."

"No."

Isabella laughed again.

"This..."

She placed a folder onto the table.

"...is business."

Khloe looked down.

Inside the folder...

Were legal documents.

Stock transfer agreements.

Emergency succession paperwork.

Corporate voting authorizations.

Khloe suddenly understood.

This conspiracy had never been driven by love.

It was about controlling one of the largest biotechnology companies in America.

Marcus had merely been the obstacle.

Their unborn son...

Was the real target.

At that same moment...

Rachel's surveillance expert interrupted the strategy meeting.

"I found the van."

Everyone rushed toward the monitor.

Satellite traffic cameras displayed the black medical transport vehicle.

It had entered Brooklyn.

But never exited.

Rachel zoomed in.

"There."

An abandoned industrial district.

Only one building large enough to hide multiple vehicles.

Warehouse 19.

Marcus immediately reached for his jacket.

"We're going."

Laura blocked his path.

"If they're armed, rushing in gets Khloe killed."

Rachel nodded.

"She's right."

Marcus clenched his fists.

"So what do we do?"

Rachel smiled for the first time.

"We let them think..."

"...their plan is still working."

She looked at Daniel.

"Send the ransom confirmation."

Laura stared at her.

"You want to fake compliance?"

Rachel nodded.

"If they believe Marcus is surrendering..."

She looked toward the warehouse on the screen.

"They'll lower their guard."

Marcus understood immediately.

"And while they're celebrating..."

Rachel finished his thought.

"...we take Khloe home."

No one noticed...

In another room...

One hospital administrator quietly slipped out into the hallway.

He pulled out a burner phone.

The call connected instantly.

"They found Warehouse 19."

A familiar male voice answered.

"I expected they would."

The administrator frowned.

"What now?"

The man replied without emotion.

"Leave the warehouse."

"Immediately."

The administrator looked confused.

"But Isabella is still there."

A brief silence followed.

Then came the chilling response.

"She has served her purpose."

The line went dead.

Far away...

Inside Warehouse 19...

Neither Isabella...

Nor Dr. Ethan Harrison...

Had any idea they had just been abandoned by the people who had hired them.

And outside...

Hidden on a rooftop nearly five hundred yards away...

A sniper slowly assembled a long-range rifle.

He wasn't aiming at Marcus.

He wasn't aiming at the police.

He adjusted the scope until one face filled the crosshairs.

Isabella Rossi.

Someone had decided there would be...

May you like

No witnesses.
