Chapter 3: The Man in the Blind Spot

Chapter 3: The Man in the Blind Spot

The executive elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.

Daniel Brooks stepped out, clutching the encrypted tablet so tightly his knuckles had turned white.

Two armed security officers immediately fell in beside him.

Arthur Sterling had given one order.

No copies. No leaks. No delays.

Daniel intended to obey every word.

Marcus had barely left Khloe's recovery room when Arthur approached.

"The footage is ready."

Marcus looked toward the tablet.

"The entire attack?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes..."

He hesitated.

"And something else."

Arthur noticed.

"What didn't you tell me over the phone?"

Daniel glanced around the hallway.

"There are too many people here."

Arthur nodded toward a nearby executive conference room.

"Inside."

Within seconds the room was sealed.

Only five people remained inside.

Marcus.

Arthur.

Daniel.

Detective Laura Bennett.

Detective Michael Ruiz.

Arthur locked the door himself.

"No one enters."

Daniel carefully placed the tablet onto the conference table.

"I recovered the backup from the encrypted archive."

Laura frowned.

"I thought the footage had been deleted."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"It was."

"But whoever erased it only accessed the visible server."

He touched the screen.

"They never found the hidden archive."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"Show us."

The video began.

Timestamp:

8:41:12 PM

Khloe entered the suite alone.

She kicked off her high heels with a relieved smile.

Laura watched quietly.

"She's exhausted."

Marcus nodded.

"She'd been greeting donors for almost four hours."

The recording continued.

Khloe poured herself water.

Sat beside the window.

Placed one hand over her stomach.

She smiled softly.

Almost unconsciously.

Marcus couldn't help smiling too.

"Our son had been kicking all evening."

Arthur noticed the tenderness in Marcus's voice.

For a brief moment, the billionaire businessman disappeared.

Only a husband remained.

The timestamp advanced.

8:44 PM

The suite door opened.

Isabella Rossi entered.

Elegant.

Confident.

She didn't knock.

Laura paused the video.

"Was she invited?"

Marcus answered immediately.

"No."

Arthur looked toward Daniel.

"Resume."

For nearly four minutes, the women talked.

The recovered audio remained imperfect, but several sentences were crystal clear.

"You were never enough."

"You stole my future."

"He was supposed to choose me."

Detective Ruiz slowly leaned back.

"This wasn't spontaneous."

Laura nodded.

"She came here to confront Khloe."

Marcus remained silent.

His eyes never left the screen.

Then something unexpected happened.

Khloe stood.

Instead of arguing...

She walked toward the door.

Trying to leave.

Laura whispered,

"She was ending the confrontation."

Isabella blocked the exit.

Khloe stepped sideways.

Again.

Blocked.

Three separate times.

Marcus clenched his fists.

Arthur quietly observed him.

Every muscle in Marcus's body looked ready to explode.

The argument intensified.

Isabella suddenly leaned closer.

Too close.

Her lips moved.

Daniel zoomed in.

The audio software isolated part of the sentence.

"...after tonight..."

Static.

"...everything becomes mine."

Marcus froze.

Khloe had remembered correctly.

Laura immediately wrote it down.

"Possible motive."

Arthur looked thoughtful.

"No."

Laura glanced at him.

"What do you mean?"

"That isn't a motive."

Arthur stared at the paused frame.

"It's an objective."

The recording resumed.

Khloe pointed toward the door.

Clearly telling Isabella to leave.

Instead...

Isabella shoved her.

Hard.

Khloe stumbled backward.

Her lower back slammed into the marble table.

Marcus shut his eyes.

Even though he already knew what happened...

Watching it was unbearable.

Laura didn't blink.

Every detail mattered.

The second shove came only seconds later.

Khloe lost her balance.

A crystal glass shattered.

Then—

Isabella kicked her.

There was no confusion.

No accident.

No self-defense.

Her heel struck Khloe's side with brutal force.

Khloe collapsed instantly.

Laura stopped the recording.

The room became silent.

Finally she spoke.

"Attempted murder."

Detective Ruiz slowly nodded.

"I agree."

Marcus stared at Isabella's frozen image.

"So do I."

Daniel took a deep breath.

"That's not the important part."

Everyone looked toward him.

"What do you mean?"

He rewound exactly three minutes.

8:42:58 PM

The hallway camera appeared.

Khloe had not yet entered the suite.

The corridor was empty.

Then...

A man walked into view.

Black baseball cap.

Maintenance uniform.

Toolbox.

Laura frowned.

"Hospital engineer?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No employee matched this face."

Arthur leaned forward.

"What did he do?"

Daniel enlarged the image.

The man stopped beside Suite 1708.

Looked both directions.

Opened a maintenance panel beside the door.

Thirty-four seconds later...

He closed it.

Walked away.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

"What was inside that panel?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"The network connection for the room."

Silence.

Laura immediately understood.

"He disconnected the cameras."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

Ruiz frowned.

"So Isabella didn't act alone."

"No."

Arthur's expression darkened.

"Someone prepared the room before she arrived."

Daniel switched to another camera angle.

The same man entered the service elevator.

But before the doors closed...

He looked directly into the security camera.

Only for one second.

Long enough for facial recognition software.

Daniel opened another screen.

Searching...

Five seconds.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Then...

NO MATCH FOUND

Ruiz frowned.

"No criminal record?"

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"No identity."

Arthur looked concerned.

"Meaning?"

"The facial database couldn't find him."

Laura answered quietly.

"Professional."

Marcus suddenly noticed something.

"Stop."

Daniel paused.

Marcus walked closer.

"Zoom in."

The image enlarged.

The fake maintenance worker wore black gloves.

Nothing unusual.

Except...

On his right wrist...

A silver watch.

Marcus stared.

"I've seen that before."

Arthur looked surprised.

"Where?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

His memory raced backward.

Business dinners.

Charity galas.

Private meetings.

Then...

His face changed.

"No..."

Laura noticed.

"What?"

Marcus looked toward Arthur.

"That's the limited-edition Sterling Legacy watch."

Arthur frowned.

"Only fifty were ever made."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"You gave them to your executive board."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Twenty years ago."

The room became deathly quiet.

Only one question remained.

If the stranger wore a Sterling Legacy watch...

Someone inside Arthur's own organization had helped him.

At that exact moment...

Across town...

Inside a luxury penthouse overlooking Manhattan...

A man removed a maintenance uniform from a duffel bag.

He burned it inside the fireplace.

One piece at a time.

Cap.

Gloves.

Badge.

Coveralls.

His phone rang.

Private number.

He answered.

"It's done."

A calm female voice replied.

"No."

The man frowned.

"What?"

"The footage survived."

Silence.

"Impossible."

"It wasn't."

Another pause.

"They've seen Isabella."

"They've seen you."

The man slowly looked toward the burning fire.

"So what's next?"

The woman answered with chilling calm.

"We move to Phase Two."

The call ended.

The man stared into the flames.

Then opened another drawer.

Inside...

Lay a pistol.

A passport.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed Marcus...

Khloe...

And an unborn baby's ultrasound.

Across the top, someone had written in black ink:

"The heir must never be born."

Back at Sterling Memorial Hospital...

Detective Laura Bennett closed the tablet.

"This case just changed."

Ruiz nodded.

"It isn't a jealous lover anymore."

"It's organized."

Arthur looked toward Marcus.

"They weren't trying to hurt your wife."

Marcus finished the sentence.

"They were trying to eliminate my family."

Before anyone could speak again, Daniel's phone vibrated violently.

He answered.

His face turned white.

"What?"

Arthur stood immediately.

"What happened?"

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"The hospital nursery..."

Everyone stared.

"The power just went out."

Marcus frowned.

"So?"

Daniel looked directly into his eyes.

"The emergency generator didn't activate."

Arthur's expression froze.

"That generator has never failed."

Daniel nodded.

"And someone just accessed the neonatal intensive care unit using a stolen executive security card."

Marcus was already running toward the door.

Behind him, Arthur shouted,

"Lock down the entire hospital!"

Red emergency lights suddenly flooded every hallway.

Automatic steel security doors began sliding shut.

Somewhere inside the hospital...

Someone was still carrying out the plan.

And Khloe...

Still unconscious in recovery...

May you like

Had no idea that the most dangerous part of the night had only just begun.
