Chapter 5: The Empty Room

Chapter 5: The Empty Room

The hospital corridor fell silent.

Marcus Thorne stood frozen for only a fraction of a second.

Two armed security officers lay unconscious outside Room 1708.

One had a deep cut across his forehead.

The other was barely breathing.

The heart monitor inside the room had gone silent.

Marcus's pulse thundered in his ears.

"Khloe!"

He shoved the door open so hard it slammed against the wall.

The room was empty.

The hospital bed sat in the center of the suite.

Its blankets had been thrown aside.

The IV line had been ripped out.

Blood stained the white sheets.

The fetal monitor displayed a flashing error message.

PATIENT DISCONNECTED

Marcus stared in disbelief.

"No..."

Arthur Sterling reached the doorway moments later.

His face drained of color.

"Where is she?"

No one answered.

Detective Laura Bennett immediately took control.

"Nobody touch anything!"

Crime scene technicians rushed into the room.

Laura knelt beside the hospital bed.

The IV tubing had been cut with something razor-sharp.

Not torn.

Not broken.

Cut.

She looked toward Marcus.

"This wasn't an emergency evacuation."

"It was an abduction."

Marcus's entire body stiffened.

"They took her."

Arthur slowly turned toward Daniel Brooks.

"Lock every exit."

Daniel was already speaking into his radio.

"Attention all security units. Total lockdown. Nobody enters. Nobody leaves. Search every floor."

Within seconds, the hospital became a maze of locked doors and armed officers.

Whoever had taken Khloe was trapped.

Or so they hoped.

Three minutes earlier...

Khloe slowly opened her eyes.

Everything was blurry.

The medication still clouded her thoughts.

She heard footsteps.

Soft.

Measured.

She assumed Marcus had returned.

"...Marcus?"

No answer.

Instead, a man wearing blue surgical scrubs stepped beside her bed.

His face was hidden behind a surgical mask.

"It's time to move you, Mrs. Thorne."

Khloe frowned weakly.

"Move... me?"

"The doctor ordered another ultrasound."

She tried to remember.

No one had mentioned another test.

Something felt wrong.

"My husband..."

The man smiled beneath his mask.

"He's waiting downstairs."

Khloe attempted to sit up.

Pain shot through her abdomen.

She winced.

The man gently adjusted her pillow.

"Don't worry."

"You'll see him soon."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

As he reached toward the IV line...

Khloe noticed something.

His wrist.

A silver watch.

Exactly like the one Marcus had pointed out in the security footage.

Fear instantly replaced the medication-induced haze.

"You..."

The man's eyes met hers.

For one brief moment...

Neither of them moved.

Then Khloe whispered,

"You were here..."

The man's expression changed.

He knew she had recognized the watch.

Without another word...

He pulled a syringe from his pocket.

Khloe tried to scream.

His gloved hand covered her mouth.

The sedative entered her bloodstream.

Within seconds...

Darkness swallowed everything.

Present time...

Daniel Brooks raced into the Security Operations Center.

"Replay every camera on the seventeenth floor!"

Technicians immediately pulled up the footage.

Hallway Camera 17A.

Black screen.

Hallway Camera 17B.

Black screen.

Elevator Camera.

Black screen.

Daniel slammed his fist against the desk.

"Again?"

One technician swallowed nervously.

"They hacked the surveillance network."

Daniel zoomed into the system logs.

"No..."

"They didn't hack it."

He enlarged a line of code.

Someone had logged in using...

Arthur Sterling's executive authorization.

Daniel stared.

"That's impossible."

Arthur had been standing beside Marcus the entire evening.

Someone else had used his credentials.

But who?

Meanwhile...

Laura examined the unconscious security officers.

One slowly regained consciousness.

"What happened?"

The officer groaned.

"A doctor..."

Laura leaned closer.

"What doctor?"

"He showed us an executive transfer order."

"He said Mrs. Thorne needed emergency imaging."

Laura frowned.

"Did you verify his identity?"

The officer closed his eyes.

"I tried..."

"He showed Mr. Sterling's digital authorization."

Arthur looked stunned.

"I never approved anything."

The officer continued.

"Then..."

"I felt something hit my neck."

Laura rolled up his collar.

A tiny puncture wound.

"Dart."

She looked toward Ruiz.

"They were tranquilized."

Marcus clenched his jaw.

"This was planned to the second."

Down in the underground parking garage...

A black medical transport van idled near the service exit.

Inside the rear compartment...

Khloe slowly regained consciousness.

Her wrists were restrained with soft medical straps.

Not tight enough to leave marks.

Just enough to prevent movement.

The vehicle swayed gently as it drove.

She struggled to focus.

A familiar voice spoke from the front seat.

"You woke up earlier than expected."

Khloe's heart stopped.

She recognized the voice.

It wasn't Isabella.

It wasn't Richard Vale.

It was someone she had trusted.

Someone she had met dozens of times.

Someone who had attended family dinners.

"Dr... Harrison?"

The driver smiled in the rearview mirror.

Dr. Ethan Harrison.

Chief of Maternal Medicine at Sterling Memorial Hospital.

The same physician who had supervised her pregnancy for months.

"You..."

Khloe whispered.

"Why?"

He sighed.

"I wish you hadn't opened your eyes."

Back at the hospital...

Daniel suddenly froze.

"I found something."

Marcus hurried over.

"What?"

Daniel replayed an exterior camera.

Only one camera had remained online.

A loading dock camera facing the service road.

The footage showed a medical transport van leaving the hospital exactly four minutes earlier.

Laura immediately paused the frame.

"Zoom in."

The rear license plate was partially obscured by mud.

Only three characters remained visible.

7KX

Ruiz wrote them down.

"Can we identify the driver?"

Daniel enhanced the image.

Slowly...

The driver's face became clearer.

Marcus stepped closer.

His breathing stopped.

"No..."

Arthur stared at the monitor.

"It can't be."

Laura looked between them.

"You know him?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"He's Khloe's obstetrician."

Silence filled the room.

Arthur whispered,

"Ethan Harrison..."

"The man we trusted with her life."

Across Manhattan...

The van entered an abandoned industrial district near the East River.

Inside an old warehouse, several people waited.

The large steel doors rolled open.

Dr. Harrison parked inside.

The doors shut behind him.

Khloe heard voices.

More than one person.

She was lifted onto a stretcher.

Still pretending to be unconscious, she listened carefully.

A woman spoke first.

"Any problems?"

Dr. Harrison removed his gloves.

"Marcus nearly caught us."

Another voice laughed.

"But he didn't."

Then...

Khloe heard the voice she feared most.

Isabella Rossi.

"I told you he would choose saving her over chasing us."

Footsteps approached.

Khloe kept her eyes closed.

Isabella gently brushed a strand of hair away from Khloe's face.

"Sleep while you can."

She smiled coldly.

"By tomorrow..."

"There will be no Khloe Thorne."

"And there will certainly be..."

She placed one hand on Khloe's pregnant belly.

"...no Thorne heir."

A tear slipped silently from beneath Khloe's closed eyelid.

She knew one thing with absolute certainty.

This had never been an act of jealousy.

It was an organized conspiracy.

And someone with immense wealth...

Was paying for every step.

Back at Sterling Memorial Hospital, Daniel's computer suddenly emitted a sharp alert.

A new file had just appeared on the hospital server.

No sender.

No IP address.

Only one video.

Marcus clicked it immediately.

The screen showed Khloe.

Alive.

Restrained.

A digital timer counted down in the corner.

23:59:58

A distorted mechanical voice filled the speakers.

"You have twenty-four hours."

"Stop looking for Isabella Rossi."

"Withdraw every police investigation."

"And transfer control of Thorne Biotech to the account you are about to receive."

"If you refuse..."

The voice paused.

The camera zoomed in on Khloe's terrified face.

"...your wife and your unborn son die together."

The video ended.

The room fell into absolute silence.

Marcus slowly looked up.

His eyes no longer showed fear.

Only determination.

"They made one mistake."

Laura looked at him.

"What mistake?"

Marcus's voice was calm.

"They think this is about money."

He reached for his phone.

"It isn't."

Arthur frowned.

"Who are you calling?"

Marcus pressed a single number from memory.

The call connected after one ring.

"I need the Sentinel Team."

Laura's eyes widened.

"The Sentinel Team?"

Marcus nodded.

"They're not police."

"They're not private security."

"They're the people my family calls..."

"...when someone declares war."

Far across the city, inside a secure facility hidden beneath an unmarked skyscraper, six individuals simultaneously received the same encrypted message.

MISSION ACTIVATED

Protect the Thorne Heir.

One by one...

May you like

They stood up.
