Chapter 4: The Blackout

Chapter 4: The Blackout

The shrill sound of the hospital lockdown alarm echoed through every corridor.

Heavy steel security doors slid into place.

Red emergency lights washed over the white marble walls.

Within seconds, Sterling Memorial Hospital transformed from one of New York's most luxurious private medical centers into a fortress.

Marcus Thorne sprinted down the hallway.

Behind him came Arthur Sterling, Detective Laura Bennett, Detective Michael Ruiz, and half a dozen armed hospital security officers.

Every passing nurse stepped out of their way.

"What floor?" Marcus shouted.

Daniel Brooks answered through his headset.

"Level Six. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit."

Marcus frowned.

"Our baby hasn't been born."

Arthur looked equally confused.

"Then why target the NICU?"

No one had an answer.

Meanwhile...

On Level Six...

Darkness swallowed the nursery.

Only battery-powered emergency lights cast faint blue shadows across the room.

Tiny incubators lined the walls.

Inside them slept premature infants weighing less than three pounds.

Machines continued running on backup batteries.

But they wouldn't last forever.

Nurse Emily Carter held a flashlight with one trembling hand while checking each baby's oxygen level.

"Battery status?"

Another nurse looked at the monitor.

"Twenty-two minutes."

Emily swallowed.

"Maintenance should already be here."

The elevator chimed.

Its doors slowly opened.

A hospital engineer stepped out carrying a metal toolbox.

He wore a navy maintenance uniform.

An executive access badge hung around his neck.

Emily sighed with relief.

"Finally."

The man smiled politely.

"I was sent to restore the emergency generator."

His voice was calm.

Professional.

Almost too calm.

Emily nodded toward the utility room.

"This way."

The engineer followed.

As they disappeared around the corner...

No one noticed that his identification badge displayed the name of a real employee...

Who had been on vacation in Hawaii for the past week.

On the seventeenth floor...

Marcus reached Khloe's recovery suite.

Two armed officers already stood outside.

"Has anyone entered?"

"No, Mr. Thorne."

Marcus opened the door.

Khloe was asleep.

A fetal heart monitor quietly echoed beside her bed.

Beep...

Beep...

Beep...

The sound instantly eased the crushing pressure inside his chest.

He walked to her bedside.

Gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"I won't let anyone hurt you again."

She didn't wake.

But her fingers instinctively wrapped around his hand.

Marcus smiled sadly.

"I'll be back."

He kissed her forehead.

Then turned toward Detective Bennett.

"I want four officers outside this room."

Laura nodded.

"You'll have six."

Downstairs...

Arthur stopped Daniel near the elevator.

"I want to know one thing."

Daniel waited.

"Who had access to an executive security card?"

Daniel immediately answered.

"Only senior board members."

Arthur frowned.

"How many?"

"Twelve."

Laura looked thoughtful.

"And how many still work for Sterling Medical?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Eleven."

Everyone looked at him.

"The twelfth?"

Daniel's face became uneasy.

"He disappeared six years ago."

Arthur's expression changed.

"Who?"

Daniel quietly spoke the name.

"Richard Vale."

Marcus stopped walking.

He knew that name.

Richard Vale.

Former Chief of Hospital Operations.

Arthur's closest advisor.

A man who had resigned overnight after an unexplained financial investigation.

No charges were ever filed.

He simply vanished.

Laura noticed Marcus' reaction.

"You know him?"

Marcus nodded slowly.

"He attended my wedding."

Arthur looked disturbed.

"He was practically family."

At that same moment...

Inside the maintenance room...

The fake engineer removed a small electronic device from his toolbox.

He connected it to the hospital's emergency power system.

A green light blinked.

Then turned red.

He smiled.

"Phase Two complete."

Behind him...

Nurse Emily frowned.

"What exactly are you doing?"

The man slowly turned around.

His smile never disappeared.

"Making sure..."

He reached into the toolbox.

"...no one survives to testify."

Emily's eyes widened.

Instead of electrical tools...

The toolbox contained a silenced pistol.

A muffled sound echoed through the room.

Pop.

Emily gasped.

She looked down.

Blood spread across her uniform.

The flashlight slipped from her fingers.

She collapsed without another word.

The fake engineer caught her body before it hit the floor.

Quiet.

Efficient.

Professional.

He dragged her behind the generator.

Then calmly wiped a single drop of blood from his glove.

His phone vibrated.

One message appeared.

Proceed to Level 17.

He deleted it instantly.

Back in the Security Operations Center...

Daniel monitored hundreds of surveillance cameras.

Most were functioning again.

One remained black.

Generator Room B.

Daniel frowned.

"That's strange."

He tapped the keyboard.

"No signal."

A technician leaned closer.

"Maybe the blackout damaged it."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

He enlarged the system logs.

"The camera was manually disabled."

His heartbeat quickened.

"Someone's still inside."

He grabbed the emergency radio.

"Security Team Alpha."

A voice replied.

"Go ahead."

"Proceed immediately to Generator Room B."

"Possible hostile suspect."

Three officers rushed toward the room.

Weapons drawn.

Their boots echoed through the empty hallway.

The lead officer counted silently.

Three...

Two...

One...

He kicked open the door.

"Hospital Security!"

Silence.

The room appeared empty.

One officer noticed Nurse Emily lying behind the generator.

"Officer down!"

They rushed toward her.

Too late.

A faint metallic click sounded overhead.

The lead officer looked up.

A fragmentation flash grenade dropped from the ceiling.

"Oh no—"

The explosion shook the hallway.

Smoke filled the room.

Sprinklers activated instantly.

Somewhere beyond the smoke...

The fake engineer escaped through a maintenance tunnel.

Marcus heard the explosion from three floors above.

His blood ran cold.

"What was that?"

Daniel's voice crackled through the radio.

"Generator Room."

Marcus didn't wait.

He sprinted toward the emergency stairwell.

Arthur followed close behind.

Five minutes later...

Detective Bennett surveyed the destroyed generator room.

Emily's body had already been covered.

The injured officers received emergency treatment.

Laura crouched beside the toolbox left behind by the assassin.

Most of it had burned.

One object remained untouched.

A silver fountain pen.

Expensive.

Elegant.

She picked it up carefully.

There were initials engraved near the clip.

R.V.

Richard Vale.

Laura slowly looked toward Arthur.

"I don't think this was left by accident."

Arthur's face hardened.

"He wants us to know who's involved."

Marcus stared at the initials.

"No."

Laura looked at him.

"What?"

Marcus pointed toward the pen.

"He wants us to believe Richard Vale is involved."

Silence filled the room.

Marcus continued.

"A professional killer doesn't accidentally leave evidence."

Arthur slowly nodded.

"He's right."

Laura slipped the pen into an evidence bag.

"So..."

"If Richard Vale didn't leave this..."

Marcus finished her sentence.

"Someone wants us chasing the wrong man."

Just then...

Daniel's phone rang again.

His face lost all color after only three seconds.

Arthur stepped closer.

"What now?"

Daniel whispered,

"The maternity floor..."

Marcus immediately turned.

"What about it?"

Daniel looked directly into his eyes.

"The fetal heart monitor in Khloe's room..."

He paused.

"...has just gone offline."

Marcus didn't wait for another word.

He ran.

Faster than he had ever run in his life.

Because deep inside...

He already knew.

The blackout...

The nursery...

The fake engineer...

None of it had been the real objective.

It had all been a distraction.

The true target...

Had always been Khloe Thorne.

As Marcus reached the seventeenth floor, he saw something that made his heart stop.

The two security officers outside Khloe's room were lying unconscious on the floor.

And the door to her recovery suite...

May you like

Was slowly swinging open.
