Chapter 2: Blood on Marble

Chapter 2: Blood on Marble

The red light above Operating Room Three remained on.

No one dared speak louder than a whisper.

Marcus Thorne stood motionless outside the doors, his tuxedo still stained with Khloe's blood. The charity gala downstairs continued as if nothing had happened. Cameras flashed. Guests laughed over champagne.

Above them, a billionaire's wife was fighting to protect her unborn child.

Marcus stared at the glowing surgical light.

Every second felt like punishment.

Arthur Sterling quietly approached him.

"You love her."

It wasn't a question.

Marcus nodded without looking away.

"More than my own life."

Arthur folded his hands behind his back.

"Then don't let your emotions blind you."

Marcus finally turned.

"You think I'm being emotional?"

"I think someone planned this."

Arthur's voice remained calm.

"Women like Isabella Rossi don't suddenly lose control."

Marcus remembered Isabella's expression.

Not rage.

Not panic.

Confidence.

The confidence of someone who believed there would be no consequences.

"She expected to win," Marcus said quietly.

Arthur nodded.

"Exactly."

Twenty minutes earlier...

Deep beneath the hospital, inside the Digital Security Center...

Rows of servers hummed softly.

Chief Security Analyst Daniel Brooks stared at three computer monitors with growing disbelief.

"The primary recording is gone."

One technician swallowed.

"Someone manually interrupted the live feed."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

He zoomed in on the system log.

"The interruption happened after the recording finished uploading."

Another technician frowned.

"That's impossible."

Daniel smiled.

"No..."

"It means whoever deleted it doesn't understand how our backup system works."

Every VIP suite in the Sterling Medical Network recorded simultaneously to three independent servers.

The visible system.

The encrypted archive.

The off-site emergency vault.

Delete one...

The other two remained untouched.

Daniel inserted an encrypted security key.

The screen changed.

Archive Recovery Authorized.

A progress bar appeared.

2%...

5%...

11%...

One technician leaned closer.

"If this works..."

Daniel didn't answer.

He was already watching the first recovered frames.

Upstairs...

The operating room doors suddenly opened.

A surgeon stepped outside, removing his gloves.

Marcus was beside him instantly.

"How are they?"

The doctor's expression remained professional.

"Mrs. Thorne has several bruised ribs."

Marcus barely breathed.

"And the baby?"

"The placenta hasn't detached."

Marcus closed his eyes.

Thank God.

"But..."

The doctor's tone changed.

"There was significant abdominal trauma."

Arthur immediately stepped closer.

"Is the child safe?"

"For now."

The doctor chose every word carefully.

"We've stopped the bleeding."

"Both mother and baby are stable."

A wave of relief swept through the hallway.

Marcus nearly collapsed.

Then the doctor continued.

"But the next forty-eight hours will determine everything."

Silence returned.

"The baby could still arrive prematurely."

"We'll monitor them around the clock."

Marcus nodded.

"I don't care what it costs."

The doctor looked almost offended.

"This isn't about money."

"It's about giving them time."

Marcus lowered his head.

"Then give them every second possible."

Across the hallway...

Two police detectives stepped off the elevator.

Detective Laura Bennett.

Detective Michael Ruiz.

Both specialized in violent crimes involving high-profile families.

Laura flashed her badge.

"We received a report of an assault."

Arthur answered first.

"I'm Arthur Sterling."

Recognition immediately crossed both detectives' faces.

"Mr. Sterling."

"My niece is the victim."

Laura looked toward Marcus.

"And you are?"

"Marcus Thorne."

Her partner quietly whispered,

"The Thorne Group?"

Marcus ignored the comment.

Laura opened her notebook.

"I need everyone's statement."

She looked around.

"Where's the suspect?"

Security officers escorted Isabella from a nearby conference room.

She looked exhausted.

Her mascara had run slightly.

Her eyes were red.

The perfect picture of innocence.

She saw the detectives.

Finally.

Something she could control.

She began crying again.

"I never wanted anyone hurt."

Laura calmly interrupted.

"You'll have plenty of time to explain."

Isabella nodded weakly.

"I was trying to protect myself."

Marcus laughed.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

It was cold.

Disappointed.

Almost frightening.

Laura looked at him.

"You disagree?"

Marcus stepped aside.

He pointed toward the operating room.

"My wife is inside."

"Seven months pregnant."

He looked directly into Isabella's eyes.

"If that's self-defense..."

He paused.

"...I'd hate to see what murder looks like."

Isabella lowered her head.

She said nothing.

Meanwhile...

Inside another hospital room...

Elaine Parker replayed every moment in her mind.

Something bothered her.

Something she hadn't noticed earlier.

She opened the event schedule on her tablet.

7:15 PM

Khloe leaves the ballroom.

7:17 PM

Marcus is scheduled for an interview.

7:20 PM

Isabella excuses herself from the donor reception.

Elaine's eyes widened.

Too perfect.

She immediately called hotel management.

"I need hallway footage."

The manager sounded confused.

"From which floor?"

"VIP maternity wing."

A pause.

"I'm sorry."

"The hallway cameras were temporarily offline."

Elaine froze.

"What?"

"Only for about fifteen minutes."

"When?"

The manager checked.

"Exactly during the assault."

Elaine slowly lowered the phone.

Two camera systems.

Both disabled.

At exactly the same time.

That wasn't luck.

Someone had planned every minute.

Back inside Security Operations...

Recovery reached sixty-three percent.

Daniel suddenly stopped typing.

"There."

One monitor displayed footage from twelve minutes before the attack.

Khloe entered the suite.

Alone.

She removed her heels.

Smiled tiredly.

Sat beside the window.

Nothing unusual.

Seconds later...

The door opened.

Isabella walked inside.

Daniel leaned closer.

"There you are..."

The recovered audio was distorted.

But visible.

Every movement.

Every gesture.

Every expression.

One technician whispered,

"She's arguing."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

"She's provoking."

The footage continued.

Khloe remained seated.

Calm.

Trying to end the conversation.

Isabella stepped closer.

Again.

And again.

Like a predator cornering prey.

Then—

The image froze.

Recovery paused.

Everyone held their breath.

One technician hit the keyboard.

Nothing.

Daniel frowned.

"Come on..."

The progress bar resumed.

64%.

65%.

66%.

The attack was only seconds away.

Elsewhere...

Inside a black luxury sedan parked across the street...

A man wearing leather gloves watched the hospital entrance through binoculars.

His phone vibrated.

He answered immediately.

A woman's voice came through the speaker.

"Has she been arrested?"

"No."

Silence.

"The footage?"

The man frowned.

"I thought it was erased."

Another pause.

"It wasn't?"

"I don't know."

"I'll find out."

The woman ended the call without another word.

The man slowly looked back toward the hospital.

Something had gone terribly wrong.

He started the engine.

Not to leave.

To wait.

Midnight.

Marcus finally entered Khloe's recovery room.

She looked pale.

Fragile.

Machines quietly monitored every heartbeat.

Their unborn son's heartbeat echoed beside hers.

Marcus gently took her hand.

She opened her eyes.

"You stayed."

He smiled sadly.

"I'll always stay."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I thought..."

Her voice trembled.

"I thought I was going to lose him."

Marcus leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

"You didn't."

She closed her eyes.

"Marcus..."

"Yes?"

"There was something strange."

He immediately focused.

"What?"

"Before Isabella attacked me..."

Khloe struggled to remember.

"She kept saying..."

Marcus squeezed her hand.

"What did she say?"

Khloe whispered,

"She said..."

"'Tonight everything finally belongs to me.'"

Marcus frowned.

"What did she mean?"

Khloe slowly shook her head.

"I don't know."

"But..."

Her eyes opened again.

"There was no anger in her voice."

"She sounded..."

"...certain."

Marcus's expression hardened.

This had never been about jealousy.

It had been about something much bigger.

At that exact moment, Daniel Brooks burst out of the underground security center, carrying an encrypted tablet.

He ran toward the executive elevators.

Breathing heavily.

The recovered footage had reached one hundred percent.

And what he had just watched...

Changed the entire case.

Because Isabella Rossi hadn't simply attacked Khloe.

Someone else had entered the suite three minutes before Marcus arrived.

Someone whose face appeared for only six seconds.

Six seconds...

May you like

That could destroy far more than one woman's life.

To be continued...
