Chapter 7: Crosshairs

Chapter 7: Crosshairs

Rain began to fall over Brooklyn.

From the rooftop of an abandoned textile factory, a sniper lay perfectly still behind a suppressed precision rifle.

His breathing was slow.

Measured.

Professional.

Through the scope, Warehouse 19 filled his vision.

A single figure stood beside a broken window.

Isabella Rossi.

The green crosshairs settled over her chest.

A gloved finger tightened against the trigger.

Then...

His encrypted earpiece crackled.

"Negative."

The sniper froze.

The cold voice continued.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"We still need her alive."

The sniper relaxed his finger.

"What changed?"

"Marcus found the warehouse."

Silence.

"So?"

"We're moving to Phase Three."

The transmission ended.

The sniper never questioned orders.

He simply waited.

Inside Sterling Memorial Hospital...

Rachel Kane studied the blueprints of Warehouse 19 projected across a conference table.

"There are six entrances."

Her surveillance specialist shook his head.

"Only five."

Rachel looked up.

"What do you mean?"

The specialist enlarged an old architectural drawing.

"This warehouse was connected to the subway freight tunnels in the 1950s."

A hidden tunnel appeared beneath the building.

Marcus leaned closer.

"Could they escape through it?"

"They already planned to."

Rachel nodded.

"Then they expect us to attack from the front."

Detective Laura Bennett crossed her arms.

"So we don't."

Rachel smiled.

"We enter from below."

Arthur Sterling entered carrying another file.

"I found something."

Everyone turned toward him.

"It's about Richard Vale."

Laura immediately opened the folder.

Inside were personnel records dating back almost ten years.

Richard Vale.

Chief Operating Officer.

Resigned six years earlier.

No forwarding address.

No financial activity.

Officially...

He had disappeared.

Rachel frowned.

"No one disappears that completely."

Arthur removed one final page.

"This wasn't in his employee file."

Marcus took it.

It was an old photograph.

Five people stood together outside Sterling Memorial Hospital during its grand opening.

Arthur.

Richard Vale.

A younger Dr. Ethan Harrison.

Another executive Marcus recognized.

And—

Marcus stared at the fifth face.

"No..."

Laura looked at the photograph.

"Who is she?"

Arthur's expression hardened.

"My younger sister."

Marcus slowly lowered the picture.

"Khloe's mother."

Silence filled the room.

Laura looked between them.

"Richard knew Khloe's family."

Arthur nodded.

"He wasn't just an employee."

"He was one of our closest friends."

Marcus whispered,

"Which means this started years before Isabella."

Meanwhile...

Warehouse 19.

Khloe sat quietly on an old mattress inside a locked office overlooking the main floor.

Her ankle remained chained to a steel support.

Dr. Ethan Harrison checked her blood pressure.

"It has gone up."

Khloe looked away.

"I'm under a little stress."

Ethan almost smiled.

Then the smile disappeared.

"You need to eat."

"I don't want anything."

"You need strength."

"So does my baby."

Ethan hesitated.

He gently placed a sandwich and a bottle of water beside her.

"I never wanted this."

Khloe finally looked into his eyes.

"Then help me."

He didn't answer.

Instead...

He quietly unlocked one side of the ankle restraint.

Not enough for her to escape.

Just enough to make her more comfortable.

It was a tiny act of kindness.

But Isabella noticed.

She entered the room silently.

"What are you doing?"

Ethan immediately stepped back.

"She's pregnant."

"I adjusted the restraint."

Isabella's expression turned icy.

"I hired a doctor."

"Not a humanitarian."

She grabbed Ethan by the collar.

"If she escapes..."

She leaned close enough that only he could hear.

"...you'll die before she does."

She released him.

Ethan lowered his head.

But something had changed inside him.

For the first time...

He looked at Isabella not with loyalty...

But with fear.

Across town...

Daniel Brooks finally traced the source of the ransom video.

"It wasn't sent from the warehouse."

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

Daniel highlighted a digital route.

"They used a relay server."

Laura sighed.

"So we're chasing another dead end."

Daniel shook his head.

"Not exactly."

He pointed to one tiny detail.

"The relay activated using an internal hospital network key."

Arthur frowned.

"One of ours?"

Daniel nodded.

"Someone inside Sterling Memorial is still helping them."

Rachel immediately spoke.

"Then Isabella isn't their only asset."

Laura finished the thought.

"We've got a mole."

Rachel turned toward Marcus.

"I need a complete list of everyone who knew Khloe's room number."

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"Only senior medical staff."

Daniel added,

"And hospital administration."

Arthur looked troubled.

"Less than twenty people."

Rachel smiled slightly.

"Good."

Marcus frowned.

"Why good?"

"Because traitors always make one mistake."

She looked around the room.

"When they think they're safe..."

"...they become careless."

Warehouse 19...

The rain grew heavier.

Khloe quietly studied the office window.

It was cracked.

Old.

Weak.

Beyond it lay the warehouse floor.

Three armed guards.

Two exits.

A loading dock.

She memorized everything.

Footsteps approached.

Not Isabella.

Not Ethan.

A young man carrying food entered.

He couldn't have been older than twenty-two.

He looked nervous.

Avoiding eye contact.

He set the tray down.

"I'm sorry."

Khloe blinked.

"What?"

He whispered,

"I'm sorry this happened."

Before she could respond...

Isabella called from downstairs.

"Tyler!"

The young man flinched.

"I'm coming!"

As he hurried out, something slipped from his pocket.

A small folding knife.

Neither of them noticed.

The knife landed beneath the edge of the mattress.

Khloe waited until the footsteps disappeared.

Slowly...

Carefully...

She reached beneath the mattress.

Her fingertips touched cold metal.

Hope.

For the first time since the kidnapping...

She had a chance.

At the same moment...

Rachel's team entered an abandoned subway tunnel beneath Brooklyn.

Flashlights cut through decades of dust.

The old tracks stretched into darkness.

Her tracker checked the blueprint.

"Three hundred yards."

Marcus walked beside her.

Every step felt too slow.

Every second brought the countdown closer.

Rachel raised one hand.

Everyone stopped.

Ahead...

Fresh boot prints marked the dusty floor.

Someone had used the tunnel recently.

The tracker knelt.

"At least four people."

Marcus looked forward.

"They're inside."

Rachel nodded.

"No."

She pointed toward another set of prints.

"These..."

"...are heading out."

Marcus stared.

"They're evacuating."

Rachel's expression grew grim.

"We're running out of time."

Above them...

Inside Warehouse 19...

A black SUV quietly rolled through the loading entrance.

Three men in tactical clothing stepped out.

No insignias.

No names.

One of them approached Isabella.

"We're leaving."

She frowned.

"What about Khloe?"

The man answered coldly.

"Orders changed."

"I answer to the Board."

He laughed.

"No."

"You answer to people..."

"...who are already preparing to erase you."

Isabella's smile faded.

"What are you talking about?"

The man slowly pulled back his jacket.

Revealing a suppressed pistol.

Ethan Harrison's face turned white.

The guard whispered,

"No loose ends."

Before anyone could move—

BANG!

A suppressed shot echoed through the warehouse.

But it wasn't Isabella who screamed.

One of the armed guards collapsed with a bullet through his shoulder.

Everyone turned toward the shattered skylight.

High above...

A single red laser swept across the room.

The sniper had ignored his latest orders.

He wasn't following anyone anymore.

He had chosen his own target.

Chaos exploded inside Warehouse 19.

And below...

Only fifty yards away...

Rachel Kane and Marcus Thorne heard the first gunshot.

Rachel drew her pistol.

"They've started."

Marcus looked straight ahead.

"No."

His voice became ice cold.

May you like

"We're ending this."
