Chapter 8: The Warehouse Burns

Chapter 8: The Warehouse Burns

The first gunshot shattered every carefully constructed plan.

Rachel Kane reacted instantly.

"Move!"

The Sentinel Team surged through the abandoned subway tunnel.

Flashlights switched off.

Night-vision goggles dropped into place.

No more hesitation.

No more waiting.

This had become a live rescue.

Marcus ran beside Rachel, ignoring the burning pain in his lungs.

Only one thought remained.

Khloe.

Inside Warehouse 19...

Panic spread like wildfire.

The sniper's unexpected shot had wounded one of the mercenaries instead of Isabella.

"No!"

The team leader dragged the injured man behind a stack of shipping containers.

"Find the shooter!"

Two gunmen rushed toward the broken skylight.

Another fired blindly into the darkness above.

Glass rained onto the concrete floor.

The sniper had already disappeared.

He had fired one shot...

Then vanished.

Professional.

Invisible.

Exactly as he had been trained.

Isabella's composure cracked for the first time.

She grabbed the tactical leader by the arm.

"What is happening?"

He shoved her away.

"The operation has changed."

"You said we were leaving!"

"So did you."

He aimed his rifle toward the upper offices.

"But now..."

He glanced at the wounded guard.

"...someone wants everyone here dead."

Isabella felt genuine fear for the first time that night.

She had always believed she understood the conspiracy.

Now she realized she had only been a piece on someone else's chessboard.

Upstairs...

Khloe heard the gunshot echo through the building.

Then shouting.

Running.

More gunfire.

She slowly reached beneath the mattress.

The folding knife.

Still there.

Her hands trembled as she unfolded the blade.

The restraint around her ankle was reinforced steel.

The chain wouldn't break.

But the leather strap securing it...

Could.

Slowly...

Quietly...

She began cutting.

Every movement sent pain through her bruised ribs.

Her unborn son kicked gently.

She smiled despite the fear.

"I know..."

she whispered.

"We're going home."

Below the warehouse...

Rachel held up a closed fist.

The Sentinel Team froze.

Ahead...

A rusted steel hatch led upward into the building.

Rachel pointed toward her tracker.

"Heat signatures?"

The tracker studied the thermal scanner.

"Thirteen."

Marcus frowned.

"Khloe?"

The tracker adjusted the focus.

"One isolated upstairs."

"Minimal movement."

Marcus's heart pounded.

"That's her."

Rachel nodded.

"The others?"

"Moving fast."

"And they're armed."

Rachel looked toward the sniper on her team.

"Take the catwalk."

She turned to Marcus.

"You stay with me."

Marcus didn't argue.

At that exact moment...

Daniel Brooks remained inside Sterling Memorial Hospital.

He stared at a line of encrypted code flashing across one of the recovered servers.

Something didn't make sense.

The hospital system had been accessed again.

Not from outside.

From inside.

He enlarged the login history.

One security credential appeared repeatedly.

Executive Authorization: Arthur Sterling.

Daniel frowned.

Arthur was standing with the rescue team.

So who...

He suddenly remembered something.

Every executive authorization had a physical backup card.

His eyes widened.

"The archives..."

He ran.

Back in the warehouse...

Dr. Ethan Harrison quietly entered Khloe's room.

He closed the door behind him.

Khloe immediately hid the knife beneath the blanket.

Ethan looked exhausted.

"They're coming."

Khloe stared at him.

"Who?"

"Marcus."

Hope flooded her face.

Ethan raised one hand.

"Listen carefully."

He knelt beside her.

"I can get you out."

Khloe didn't answer.

"But..."

His voice trembled.

"They'll kill me."

She looked into his eyes.

"You helped kidnap me."

"I know."

"You lied to Marcus."

"I know."

"You betrayed your oath."

Tears filled Ethan's eyes.

"I know."

Silence hung between them.

Finally Khloe spoke.

"You still have a choice."

Ethan lowered his head.

For several long seconds...

Neither of them moved.

Then...

He reached into his pocket.

A small key.

Without saying a word...

He unlocked the restraint.

The chain fell to the floor.

Khloe stared at him.

"Why?"

Ethan answered quietly.

"Because I still remember the first baby I ever delivered."

He smiled sadly.

"I became a doctor to save lives."

Not end them.

Suddenly—

The office door exploded inward.

A mercenary burst inside.

He saw the open restraint.

He saw Ethan.

He saw Khloe standing.

"Traitor!"

He raised his rifle.

Before he could fire—

BANG!

Ethan shoved Khloe aside.

The bullet struck him in the shoulder.

He collapsed against the wall.

Khloe screamed.

The mercenary aimed again.

A second shot never came.

A suppressed round pierced the man's chest.

He fell backward.

Rachel Kane entered through the shattered doorway.

Weapon raised.

Room secure.

Her eyes immediately found Khloe.

"Mrs. Thorne?"

Khloe nodded weakly.

Rachel smiled.

"Your husband is here."

Marcus sprinted into the room seconds later.

Everything else disappeared.

The gunfire.

The shouting.

The chaos.

Only Khloe remained.

She burst into tears.

"Marcus..."

He wrapped both arms around her as gently as he could.

"I've got you."

"I thought..."

"I know."

"I thought I'd never see you again."

Marcus rested his forehead against hers.

"You'll never have to."

Their unborn son kicked again.

Khloe laughed through her tears.

"He's letting us know he's okay."

Marcus placed his hand against her stomach.

"I know, little man."

"We're taking you home."

Rachel's radio crackled.

"We've got movement on the first floor!"

She turned immediately.

"Escort them out!"

Marcus helped Khloe toward the emergency stairwell.

Dr. Ethan Harrison struggled to stand.

Rachel looked back.

"You coming?"

Ethan nodded painfully.

"I have evidence."

Everyone stopped.

"What evidence?"

Ethan reached inside his jacket.

He removed a flash drive stained with blood.

"I copied everything."

Marcus frowned.

"Everything?"

"The payments."

"The messages."

"The bank transfers."

"The people behind Isabella."

Rachel's expression sharpened.

"How many?"

Ethan swallowed.

"I don't know."

"But..."

He looked directly at Marcus.

"One of the names..."

"...is a Thorne."

Marcus froze.

"My family?"

Ethan nodded.

Before he could say another word—

A red laser appeared on his chest.

Rachel shouted.

"DOWN!"

A deafening rifle shot echoed through the warehouse.

The bullet tore through Ethan's chest.

The flash drive slipped from his hand.

Marcus caught it before it hit the floor.

Rachel fired toward the distant rooftop.

Too late.

The sniper had already disappeared into the rain.

Ethan gasped for breath.

Blood spread across the concrete.

Khloe knelt beside him despite Marcus's protests.

"Stay with us."

Ethan smiled weakly.

"I don't deserve..."

"Don't talk."

He looked at Marcus.

"The drive..."

Marcus held it tightly.

"It's safe."

Ethan's breathing grew shallow.

"They're..."

He coughed blood.

"...not after the company."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Then what?"

With the last of his strength...

Ethan whispered three words.

"They want..."

He struggled to breathe.

"...Project Genesis."

His eyes closed.

The monitor clipped to Rachel's medical kit emitted one long, continuous tone.

Dr. Ethan Harrison was gone.

Silence settled over the room.

Marcus looked at the bloodstained flash drive in his hand.

He had never heard of Project Genesis.

But judging by the fear in Ethan's final expression...

Whatever it was...

People were willing to kill everyone connected to it.

And somewhere beyond the rain...

May you like

Someone was already preparing the next move.
