Chapter 11 - The Hospital Beneath the Hospital

The old Vale clinic had closed twelve years earlier.

Adrian’s father built it as a private rehabilitation facility for senior executives and wealthy donors.

Officially, it was abandoned.

Unofficially, part of the basement still had electricity.

Police surrounded the property before midnight.

Malcolm was not there.

Gideon was.

They found him in an examination room with one wrist handcuffed to a radiator.

His expensive suit was torn.

His face was bruised.

He looked relieved when Detective Chen entered.

Then he saw Adrian.

Relief vanished.

Adrian stopped in front of him.

“Where is my brother?”

“I don't know.”

“Try again.”

“I swear.”

Gideon pulled against the cuff.

“Malcolm brought me here.”

“Why?”

“He thinks I copied documents.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

Adrian almost admired the honesty.

“Where?”

Gideon looked toward Chen.

“I want immunity.”

Chen laughed.

“No.”

“Then I want a deal.”

“You kidnapped a child.”

“I never touched Noah.”

“You forged documents that enabled his confinement.”

“I didn't know where they kept him.”

“You knew he was alive.”

Gideon went silent.

Chen stepped closer.

“Start talking before Malcolm decides you know too much.”

Fear appeared immediately.

Gideon understood that possibility better than anyone.

He began.

Malcolm’s plan had started before Isabelle’s death.

Vale Global’s founder structure prevented Malcolm from consolidating control while Adrian remained actively involved.

Isabelle made the problem worse.

She was financially sophisticated.

She reviewed every major transaction.

She discovered Malcolm’s shell companies.

Then she discovered Elliot.

The secret half brother.

Malcolm panicked.

“Did Malcolm kill Isabelle?”

Adrian asked.

Gideon looked away.

“Victor arranged the car.”

Adrian’s hands curled into fists.

“And Malcolm?”

“He approved it.”

Adrian’s voice became almost inaudible.

“And Celeste?”

“She didn't know until afterward.”

Hannah had told him the same thing.

It did not absolve Celeste.

But it confirmed her version.

“What about Noah?”

Gideon swallowed.

“That was Malcolm and Celeste.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Explain.”

“After Isabelle died, Malcolm expected you to withdraw from the company permanently.”

“You didn't.”

“You came back.”

“You became more aggressive.”

“So he needed another way to break you.”

“Noah.”

“Yes.”

“Celeste agreed?”

“She agreed to fake his death.”

The room went still.

Whatever fragments of compassion Adrian might have felt for Celeste disappeared.

Gideon continued.

“She didn't agree to keeping him imprisoned for years.”

“That part kept expanding.”

“How convenient.”

“It's true.”

Gideon leaned forward.

“Celeste believed Noah would be hidden for six months.”

“Then Malcolm would manufacture a discovery.”

“Someone would ‘find’ him alive.”

“Celeste would pretend she had been deceived.”

“You would get your son back.”

“And Malcolm would already control the trust votes.”

Adrian felt disgusted.

“So she agreed to put me through a funeral for six months.”

“Yes.”

“And put Noah through six months of terror.”

“Yes.”

“Then Malcolm changed the plan.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it worked too well.”

Adrian stared.

“You stopped reviewing company decisions.”

“Malcolm gained enormous authority.”

“He realized returning Noah could restore you.”

“So he kept him hidden.”

“And Celeste did nothing.”

Gideon nodded.

“Mostly.”

“Mostly?”

“She threatened to expose Malcolm twice.”

“Both times, he threatened people around her.”

Adrian turned away.

A detective called Chen toward a computer terminal.

They had found old security footage.

One clip was dated the night Isabelle died.

The basement loading bay.

Victor entered.

Then Malcolm.

Then another man.

Edgar Pike.

Adrian stared.

The old butler.

Edgar carried a metal case.

He handed it to Victor.

“What was in that?”

Gideon looked at the screen.

“Vehicle diagnostic equipment.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

Edgar had helped sabotage Isabelle’s car.

The man who had served breakfast to Noah.

Who tied Adrian’s bow tie before his wedding.

Who stood beside his father’s coffin.

Who comforted Adrian after Isabelle’s death.

Another betrayal.

Then a second clip appeared.

Three years later.

The night Noah supposedly died.

Victor arrived carrying a sleeping child.

Noah.

Celeste entered behind him.

She was crying.

She touched Noah’s hair.

Then looked directly into the camera.

Gideon spoke quietly.

“She knew.”

Adrian did not respond.

The footage continued.

Malcolm appeared.

He said something.

No audio.

Celeste shook her head.

Malcolm stepped close.

Victor took Noah through a door.

Celeste tried to follow.

Malcolm grabbed her arm.

She slapped him.

Adrian watched without blinking.

Celeste had resisted something.

But not enough.

Never enough.

Chen called from another room.

“We found the original medical transfer records.”

Noah had been given a false identity.

Nicholas Arden.

Celeste’s surname.

Dr. Keller signed the paperwork.

The private clinic kept Noah for eleven days.

Then Victor moved him to the mansion.

Adrian noticed one more document.

A discharge authorization.

Guardian signature.

Malcolm Vale.

Relationship to patient.

FATHER.

Adrian stared.

Malcolm had repeatedly represented himself as Noah’s father.

Not only for transportation.

For trust verification.

For medical records.

For sealed guardianship hearings.

The conspiracy went deeper than simple imprisonment.

Malcolm had constructed a parallel legal life for Noah.

A life in which Adrian did not exist.

Gideon whispered.

“That was the real plan.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

“Eventually Malcolm intended to declare Noah alive.”

“After you were removed.”

“He would claim Celeste hid the child from everyone.”

“He would present himself as the relative who discovered the truth.”

“Then petition for guardianship.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“He would become Noah’s guardian.”

“And control the trust legally.”

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

Malcolm had not merely stolen Adrian’s son.

He intended to steal Adrian’s place as his father.

A detective ran in.

“We've got movement outside.”

Everyone turned.

A vehicle tore through the far gate.

Police units moved.

Adrian approached the window.

The vehicle stopped fifty yards away.

The driver door opened.

Edgar Pike stepped out.

He raised both hands.

Officers surrounded him.

Edgar shouted one sentence.

“I know where Malcolm is!”

Adrian rushed outside.

Police forced Edgar to his knees.

The old man looked up.

Blood covered one sleeve.

“Where?”

Adrian demanded.

Edgar breathed heavily.

“Your brother has Noah.”

Adrian’s world stopped.

“No.”

His phone rang.

The hospital.

Adrian answered.

A nurse was crying.

“Mr. Vale.”

“I'm so sorry.”

“There was a fire alarm.”

“Someone dressed as a federal agent came into the room.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

The nurse continued.

May you like

“We can't find your son.”
