Chapter 18 - The Woman Behind the Locked Window

The Brooklyn Heights townhouse looked ordinary.
Brownstone.
Black railings.
Flower boxes.
Curtains.
Federal agents surrounded it before dawn.
No movement.
Thermal imaging showed two people inside.
One on the ground floor.
One upstairs.
Dr. Keller answered the door carrying a suitcase.
He surrendered immediately.
The second person was inside an upstairs bedroom.
The door was locked from the outside.
Adrian waited in a vehicle half a block away.
Chen had forbidden him from entering until the building was secure.
He watched agents disappear through the doorway.
Thirty seconds.
One minute.
Three.
Then Chen emerged.
She walked toward the vehicle.
Adrian knew from her face.
He stepped out.
“Is she there?”
Chen stopped.
“Yes.”
Adrian forgot how to breathe.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
The street seemed to tilt.
He gripped the car door.
Five years.
Isabelle was alive.
“Can I see her?”
Chen hesitated.
That frightened him.
“What?”
“She is medically fragile.”
“Conscious?”
“Yes.”
“Does she know who she is?”
“We think so.”
“Does she know me?”
Chen looked toward the townhouse.
“She asked whether Noah survived.”
Adrian covered his mouth.
Tears came before he could stop them.
Hannah stood several yards away.
She looked equally stunned.
Adrian entered slowly.
Upstairs, a doctor waited outside the bedroom.
“Don't overwhelm her.”
Adrian nodded.
The door opened.
A woman sat near the window beneath a blanket.
Her hair was streaked with gray.
She was thinner.
Older.
A scar crossed her left temple.
But Adrian knew her.
Every part of him knew her.
“Isabelle.”
She turned.
For several seconds, her face remained blank.
Then her eyes filled.
“Adrian.”
He stopped in the doorway.
She stood unsteadily.
He crossed the room.
They held each other.
No dramatic words.
No questions.
Only five years of grief collapsing between two people who had both been forced to mourn lives that still existed.
Finally, Isabelle whispered.
“Noah?”
“Alive.”
She pulled back.
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“Does he remember me?”
Adrian’s voice broke.
“Yes.”
Isabelle closed her eyes.
“Thank God.”
Adrian touched her face.
“What happened?”
She sat.
He remained beside her.
The night of the crash, Isabelle’s brakes failed.
She realized something was wrong before reaching the highway.
She tried slowing the car against a guardrail.
The vehicle rolled down an embankment.
She survived with severe injuries.
Victor reached the wreck before emergency services.
He found her conscious.
Malcolm arrived minutes later.
Isabelle remembered his face.
She remembered him telling Victor.
“This is still useful.”
Then medication.
Darkness.
She woke at the old Vale clinic under another name.
Dr. Keller treated her.
Malcolm originally planned to let her die.
Then he realized she knew passwords to accounts he could not access.
So he kept her alive.
Moved her repeatedly.
Forced her to provide information.
When she refused, he isolated her.
“She tried escaping twice.”
Keller said later during interrogation.
“Both times Malcolm threatened Noah.”
Isabelle looked at Adrian.
“I thought Noah was with you.”
“He was.”
“At first.”
“Then one day Malcolm brought me a newspaper.”
“It reported Noah’s death.”
Her voice cracked.
“I stopped fighting.”
Adrian took her hand.
The same weapon.
Grief.
Malcolm had used it on everyone.
“Did you know he was alive?”
“Not until last year.”
“How?”
“Keller got drunk.”
“He said Malcolm had two ghosts instead of one.”
Adrian stared.
“Two ghosts.”
“Me and Noah.”
Isabelle nodded.
“I started watching.”
“Listening.”
“I learned Noah was in the mansion.”
“Why couldn't you contact anyone?”
“No phone.”
“Locked rooms.”
“Medication.”
“And every guard believed Malcolm owned the police.”
Adrian thought of Elliot’s missing reports.
Maybe they had reason to believe that.
“What about Celeste?”
Isabelle’s expression changed.
“She came once.”
Adrian stiffened.
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
“What happened?”
“She didn't know I was alive.”
“Malcolm brought her.”
“He wanted to frighten her.”
Celeste saw Isabelle.
Alive.
The secret had become heavier.
“What did Celeste do?”
“She cried.”
Adrian said nothing.
“She apologized.”
“For what?”
“For Noah.”
Isabelle looked directly at him.
“That was how I learned he was alive.”
Adrian’s chest tightened.
“Did she help you?”
“She tried to leave a phone.”
“Keller found it.”
“Malcolm moved me the next morning.”
Adrian struggled with conflicting emotions.
Celeste was guilty.
Deeply.
But not simply.
She had participated.
Then resisted.
Failed.
Then tried again.
No amount of later courage erased the beginning.
But truth required all of it.
Isabelle suddenly gripped Adrian’s hand.
“There’s something Malcolm doesn't know.”
“What?”
“I never gave him the real account key.”
Adrian almost laughed.
Even after five years imprisoned, Isabelle had outmaneuvered him.
“What does the key open?”
“Not money.”
“Evidence.”
“Of what?”
She looked toward the window.
“Everyone.”
“Judges.”
“Politicians.”
“Police officials.”
“Executives.”
“Malcolm kept records because he trusted blackmail more than loyalty.”
“I copied them before the crash.”
“Where?”
Isabelle looked at Adrian.
“Inside Noah’s memorial.”
He froze.
“What memorial?”
“The marble angel over his grave.”
Adrian stared.
That monument had been installed after Noah’s supposed death.
Two years after Isabelle disappeared.
“How could you put anything there?”
Isabelle looked confused.
“I didn't.”
Adrian’s heart sank.
“Then who did?”
A voice came from the doorway.
Elliot.
“I did.”
He stepped inside.
Isabelle stared at him.
“Eli.”
Elliot’s eyes filled.
“You're alive.”
She smiled faintly.
“So are you.”
Another secret alliance reunited.
Another piece returned.
Elliot explained.
Before Isabelle’s crash, she gave him an encrypted storage device.
If she disappeared, he was to hide it somewhere Malcolm would never disturb.
When Noah’s memorial was constructed, Elliot bribed a stoneworker to place the device inside the angel’s base.
Malcolm had stood beside it every anniversary.
Never knowing his downfall was six inches beneath his hand.
Adrian looked at Isabelle.
“Then this ends.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
He frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Malcolm knows about the archive now.”
“How?”
“Keller.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
Isabelle continued.
“And if Malcolm cannot control what comes out, he'll destroy everyone connected to it.”
“He's in custody.”
Isabelle looked at him.
“Malcolm prepared for that.”
Adrian remembered Covenant Black.
“Another dead-man switch?”
“Worse.”
“What?”
Isabelle whispered.
“A list.”
“If Malcolm doesn't enter a code every seventy-two hours, every person he ever blackmailed receives instructions to destroy the evidence linking them to him.”
Chen stepped into the doorway.
“How long?”
Isabelle looked at the clock.
“Last time I heard him enter it was before the gala.”
Adrian calculated.
May you like
They might have less than six hours.
