Chapter 14 - The Forty-Eighth Floor

Vale Global headquarters rose seventy-two stories above Manhattan.
At two seventeen in the morning, the building appeared dark.
That was deliberate.
Malcolm had shut down nonessential systems.
Emergency maintenance notices had cleared overnight staff.
Security logs falsely showed no activity above the thirty-fifth floor.
Elliot’s relay signal came from forty-eight.
Adrian knew that floor.
Executive archives.
Old boardrooms.
Storage.
Very few cameras.
Malcolm had renovated it privately during Adrian’s year of grief.
Another detail Adrian had never questioned.
Chen prepared entry teams.
Adrian watched from a mobile command vehicle.
He hated every second.
Elliot sat beside him monitoring the recorder relay.
A faint audio stream finally appeared.
Static.
Then Noah breathing.
Adrian leaned toward the speaker.
Malcolm’s voice entered.
“Look at the camera.”
Noah said nothing.
“Your father needs to understand.”
Silence.
“Noah.”
“I want Hannah.”
“She isn't here.”
“I want Dad.”
“You'll see him soon.”
Noah’s answer was immediate.
“You lie.”
Adrian almost smiled.
Malcolm did not.
“You've been taught disrespect.”
“No.”
Noah’s small voice stayed steady.
“I learned it.”
Elliot glanced at Adrian.
Even under terror, Noah was fighting.
Malcolm continued.
“Say the words we practiced.”
“No.”
“Noah.”
“No.”
“You will say Celeste locked you away.”
“She did.”
Malcolm paused.
Adrian stiffened.
Noah continued.
“But you told her to.”
Silence.
Then Malcolm said.
“You don't understand adult decisions.”
Noah replied.
“Mrs. Vale says that too.”
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
The conspiracy had spent years telling Noah he could not understand what was happening.
So Noah learned to listen harder.
Malcolm changed tactics.
“Your father is sick.”
“No.”
“He becomes dangerous when emotional.”
“No.”
“He abandoned you.”
“No.”
“He stopped looking.”
Noah’s voice broke slightly.
“No.”
Malcolm pressed.
“You waited three years.”
“Where was he?”
Adrian gripped the edge of the table.
Elliot looked at him.
“Don't.”
Adrian remained seated.
Noah whispered.
“He thought I was dead.”
“Because he was weak enough to believe us.”
Adrian looked up.
There.
Us.
Malcolm had implicated himself again.
Elliot marked the audio.
Malcolm continued.
“I can protect you.”
Noah answered.
“Like the wall?”
Silence.
Then a sharp sound.
Adrian shot to his feet.
“What was that?”
Elliot listened.
Noah did not cry.
Malcolm’s breathing grew louder.
Then another voice entered.
Celeste.
“Step away from him.”
Adrian stared.
Hannah stared from across the command vehicle.
Celeste had disappeared after helping Hannah escape.
No one knew where she went.
Now she was on forty-eight.
Malcolm sounded amused.
“You continue to disappoint me.”
Celeste replied.
“Let him go.”
“You came alone?”
“Yes.”
“Liar.”
“Check me.”
Footsteps.
Malcolm spoke.
“You have nothing.”
“I have the one thing you need.”
“What?”
“The original trust ledger.”
Silence.
Adrian looked at Chen.
She whispered.
“What ledger?”
Elliot shook his head.
No idea.
Celeste continued.
“Every illegal vote.”
“Every transfer.”
“Every forged guardianship certification.”
“I copied them before Gideon ran.”
Malcolm’s voice hardened.
“Where?”
“Somewhere you will never find if Noah doesn't walk out.”
A long pause.
Then Malcolm laughed.
“You finally learned leverage.”
“I learned from a monster.”
“No.”
“You learned from me.”
Celeste’s voice changed.
“I loved your brother.”
Malcolm laughed harder.
“And that is supposed to redeem you?”
“No.”
“It ruined me.”
Adrian stared at the speaker.
Celeste continued.
“I betrayed a man who trusted me.”
“I watched him mourn a child I knew was alive.”
“I told myself I was trapped.”
“I told myself I was protecting people.”
“I told myself Malcolm Vale gave me no choice.”
Her voice trembled.
“But Noah had fewer choices than I did.”
“And he remained braver than me.”
Noah whispered.
“Mrs. Vale?”
“Yes?”
“Are you helping now?”
Celeste began crying.
“Yes.”
Malcolm snapped.
“Enough.”
A gun clicked.
The command vehicle erupted in movement.
Chen spoke into her radio.
“Teams move now.”
Officers entered the tower.
Elevators had been disabled.
They took stairs.
Forty-eight floors.
Too slow.
Adrian grabbed a tactical vest.
Chen blocked him.
“No.”
“My son is up there with a gun.”
“And rushing in gets him killed.”
Elliot stared at building schematics.
“There’s another route.”
Everyone turned.
“The old pneumatic service lift.”
Adrian knew it.
A narrow maintenance elevator running from underground records to executive archives.
Decommissioned years ago.
“Can it still work?”
“If Malcolm restored the floor, maybe he restored that too.”
Adrian was already moving.
Chen cursed and followed.
They entered the basement through a secured tunnel.
The old service lift had power.
Adrian stepped inside.
Chen joined him with two agents.
The cage rose.
Thirty floors.
Forty.
Forty-five.
The audio stream continued through Adrian’s earpiece.
Malcolm said.
“Give me the ledger.”
Celeste replied.
“Release Noah.”
“No.”
“Then you get nothing.”
A scuffle.
Noah shouted.
The elevator reached forty-eight.
Doors opened.
Gunfire cracked somewhere down the corridor.
Chen pulled Adrian back.
Agents moved ahead.
Celeste screamed.
“Noah, run!”
Small footsteps approached.
Adrian ignored Chen.
He ran toward them.
Noah appeared around the corner.
“Daddy!”
Adrian dropped to his knees.
Noah crashed into him.
Adrian wrapped both arms around the boy.
Again.
For the second time in forty-eight hours, he held a son returned from the dead.
Only this time he refused to release him.
Behind them, agents shouted.
“Drop the weapon!”
Malcolm yelled something.
Another shot.
Then silence.
Chen moved forward.
Adrian covered Noah’s ears.
Seconds later, Celeste emerged with her hands raised.
Blood marked her shoulder.
She looked at Adrian.
Then Noah.
“He's okay.”
Adrian said nothing.
Agents followed.
Malcolm was between them.
Handcuffed.
Alive.
His expensive suit was torn.
His face had lost all arrogance.
Until he saw Adrian.
Then he smiled.
“You think this is over?”
Adrian stood holding Noah.
“Yes.”
Malcolm shook his head.
“You still don't know what Isabelle discovered.”
Adrian stopped.
Malcolm’s smile widened.
“She wasn't investigating me when she died.”
May you like
“She was investigating your father.”
