Chapter 6 - The Red Room

The brass key did not fit any visible lock.

Investigators spent two hours examining the blue room.

No hidden door appeared.

No red room appeared.

No mechanism appeared.

Celeste’s attorney used the delay immediately.

By afternoon, statements were being released to the press.

Mrs. Vale categorically denies involvement in the unlawful confinement of Noah Vale.

Mrs. Vale maintains that she was herself deceived by employees and advisers working within the household.

Mrs. Vale requests compassion while authorities investigate this devastating family matter.

Hannah read the statement from her phone.

“She’s blaming Victor and Gideon.”

Adrian looked through the hospital-style observation window into the room where Noah was speaking with a child psychologist.

“Of course she is.”

Detective Chen entered carrying a folder.

“We found the tea results.”

Hannah turned.

“And?”

“Zolpidem.”

Hannah stared.

“A sleeping medication?”

“In a dose likely to make you extremely impaired.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Can you connect it to Celeste?”

“Not yet.”

Hannah remembered Noah’s warning.

Mrs. Vale said Hannah was supposed to get sick.

“If I had drunk it, I wouldn't have heard Noah.”

“That's likely the point.”

Chen placed another document on the table.

“We also found something at the mansion.”

The security department maintained logs of every master-key access.

Most were digital.

Victor had administrative privileges.

He deleted almost everything from the previous three years.

Almost.

A backup server had been stored off-site.

Technicians recovered fragments.

Victor’s badge had entered hidden service zones hundreds of times.

Celeste’s badge had entered forty-seven times.

Gideon’s had entered twelve.

Malcolm’s had entered six.

Adrian stared at the numbers.

“Six.”

Chen nodded.

“Your brother visited the hidden corridors at least six documented times.”

“He told me he had never even heard of them.”

“Then he lied.”

Adrian’s phone vibrated.

A message from Malcolm.

WE NEED TO TALK BEFORE THIS DESTROYS THE FAMILY.

Adrian showed Chen.

She nodded.

“Answer him.”

Adrian typed.

WHERE?

The response came immediately.

OLD BOATHOUSE.

NO POLICE.

Adrian almost laughed.

Chen did.

“He actually wrote no police?”

“My brother has never been good at sounding innocent.”

“You're not going alone.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

The meeting was scheduled for six.

Before Adrian could leave, Noah asked to see the brass key again.

Detective Chen handed it to him inside an evidence sleeve.

Noah turned it over.

“There.”

He pointed toward a tiny engraved symbol.

A rose.

Adrian knew it.

Isabelle had designed the rose emblem for a private foundation she created before Noah was born.

The same rose appeared in the mansion’s old conservatory.

Adrian stood.

“The red room isn't near the blue room.”

Hannah frowned.

“How do you know?”

“Isabelle used that symbol to mark things connected to her foundation.”

“Her private office had one.”

“Her jewelry box.”

“And the old conservatory.”

Police searched the conservatory.

Behind a century-old wooden panel, they found the brass keyhole.

The lock opened.

A narrow staircase descended underground.

The walls below had been painted dark red.

Noah refused to enter.

Adrian understood immediately.

He stayed with the boy while Chen and her team descended.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then thirty.

At forty-three minutes, Chen emerged.

Her expression made Adrian stand.

“What?”

“You need to see it.”

Adrian looked at Noah.

Hannah immediately sat beside him.

“I've got him.”

Adrian descended.

The red room was larger than the blue room.

Not a cell.

An office.

Shelves covered every wall.

Financial documents.

Old hard drives.

File boxes.

Photographs.

Audio equipment.

This had been Isabelle’s secret archive.

She had been investigating someone before she died.

Adrian walked toward a wall covered with photographs.

Malcolm.

Victor.

Board members.

Politicians.

Bankers.

A younger Celeste stood in several photographs.

Adrian stopped.

Celeste had told him she first met Malcolm after marrying Adrian.

The photographs proved otherwise.

One was dated seven years earlier.

Celeste stood beside Malcolm at a private yacht marina.

Another showed Victor joining them.

A third showed Gideon.

All four knew each other long before Isabelle’s death.

Adrian felt something hollow open in his chest.

“This wasn't Celeste's plan.”

Chen looked at him.

“No.”

“She joined something that already existed.”

On the desk sat Isabelle’s journal.

The last entry was written three days before she died.

Adrian read.

Malcolm believes Adrian is too cautious to make Vale Global what it could become.

He has created a private group inside the company.

Victor protects them.

Gideon structures their contracts.

The woman named Celeste Arden appears to be their financial intermediary.

I believe they are moving company assets through shell firms and preparing to manipulate the succession structure.

Adrian stopped.

Celeste Arden.

Her maiden name.

Isabelle knew her.

Far below the journal entry was one final sentence.

If they learn I found this room, I may not get another chance.

Adrian closed the journal.

Chen pointed toward a laptop recovered from the desk.

“We found encrypted files.”

“How long?”

“We're working on them.”

Adrian noticed another folder.

NOAH.

Inside were documents relating to his trust.

Isabelle had apparently discovered the vulnerability years earlier.

If Noah remained alive but Adrian were declared temporarily incapable, another guardian could exercise enormous voting power.

Isabelle had written a warning in red ink.

MALCOLM NEEDS ADRIAN BROKEN, NOT DEAD.

Adrian reread it.

Broken.

Not dead.

Isabelle had understood.

If Adrian died, ownership structures would fragment.

If Adrian remained alive but emotionally incapacitated, Malcolm could control him.

Noah’s supposed death had done exactly that.

For nearly a year afterward, Adrian barely attended board meetings.

Malcolm chaired most of them.

Celeste reviewed papers before Adrian signed.

Gideon told Adrian where signatures were required.

Victor controlled who reached him.

The trap had worked perfectly.

Detective Chen’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What do you mean he's gone?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Who?”

Chen listened.

Then disconnected.

“Malcolm.”

“He never arrived at the boathouse?”

“No.”

“Where is he?”

“We had surveillance near his apartment.”

“The team lost him thirty minutes ago.”

Adrian looked at the clock.

Five forty-seven.

Thirteen minutes before their scheduled meeting.

His own phone rang.

Malcolm.

Adrian answered.

“Where are you?”

Malcolm sounded amused.

“You found Isabelle’s room.”

Adrian looked at Chen.

“How do you know?”

“Because, little brother, I always know more about your houses than you do.”

“What do you want?”

“To correct a misunderstanding.”

“You murdered my wife.”

“Careful.”

Malcolm’s tone hardened.

“You don't know who did what.”

“You helped fake Noah’s death.”

“I helped save your company.”

“You imprisoned my son.”

A pause.

“Celeste made choices I advised against.”

Adrian almost smiled.

There it was.

The first crack.

Malcolm was distancing himself.

“Come tell the police.”

“I don't think so.”

“Then what do you want?”

“Open Isabelle’s desk.”

Adrian looked down.

A small locked drawer sat beneath it.

“Why?”

“Because your wife wasn't the only person keeping secrets from you.”

The call ended.

Adrian forced the drawer open.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

His name was written across the front.

Adrian.

He opened it.

The first page was a DNA laboratory report.

Noah’s name appeared at the top.

Another child’s name appeared beneath it.

ELIAS VALE.

Probability of sibling relationship: 99.96%.

Adrian stared at the page.

He had only one son.

May you like

At least, that was what he had believed.
