Chapter 4 - The Funeral Without a Body

By sunrise, the Vale estate had become a crime scene.

News helicopters circled beyond the property.

Satellite trucks lined the private road.

Every major network carried the same breaking headline.

BILLIONAIRE'S SON FOUND ALIVE THREE YEARS AFTER REPORTED DEATH.

Adrian did not watch.

He sat beside Noah at St. Matthew’s Children’s Hospital while doctors completed examinations.

Noah was dehydrated.

Underweight.

Vitamin deficient.

But alive.

Remarkably, overwhelmingly alive.

Adrian remained within reach every second.

When a nurse needed blood, Noah held his father’s hand.

When a technician wheeled in an imaging machine, Noah searched Adrian’s face.

When anyone closed a door, Noah asked that it be reopened.

Adrian never questioned him.

Every door stayed open.

Hannah sat near the window.

Detective Chen entered shortly after eight.

Adrian immediately stood.

“What did you find?”

“Enough to turn your house upside down.”

“And Celeste?”

“Her attorneys got her out of the estate before we had sufficient grounds to arrest.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You heard the recordings.”

“We have recordings containing her voice.”

Chen remained calm.

“We need authentication, chain of custody, corroboration, and evidence connecting the statements to criminal acts.”

“My son was behind a wall.”

“Yes.”

“In my house.”

“Yes.”

“And my wife said on tape that she needed him alive.”

“I agree with what you're thinking.”

“Then why isn't she in handcuffs?”

“Because if I arrest her too early and a judge throws out the charges, I lose leverage.”

Adrian looked ready to explode.

Chen stepped closer.

“Mr. Vale, I want the people who did this convicted.”

“Not embarrassed.”

“Not temporarily detained.”

“Convicted.”

That penetrated.

Adrian sat.

“What do you need?”

“The hospital records from Noah’s supposed death.”

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“I can get them.”

“We already requested them.”

“And?”

Chen placed a folder on the table.

“The hospital says several files are missing.”

Adrian laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Of course they are.”

“One physician signed the death certificate.”

“Dr. Keller.”

“You remember him?”

“I remember every person in that room.”

Adrian looked toward Noah.

“The day Noah supposedly died, I was in Singapore.”

Hannah had never heard the full story.

Adrian continued.

“Vale Global had a major acquisition closing.”

“Noah developed a high fever.”

“Celeste called me.”

“She said the doctors thought it was viral.”

“I got on the company jet immediately.”

His eyes turned distant.

“Halfway over the Pacific, Celeste called again.”

“She told me he had gone into cardiac arrest.”

Noah watched silently.

“She said they couldn't revive him.”

Adrian’s voice thinned.

“I landed fourteen hours later.”

“By then, Dr. Keller told me Noah’s condition had involved an unidentified infection.”

“He said direct viewing of the body was discouraged.”

Chen frowned.

“Discouraged?”

“I demanded to see him.”

Adrian looked ashamed.

“Celeste begged me not to.”

“She said his face had changed.”

“She said I should remember him alive.”

Hannah whispered.

“And you believed her.”

“I had just lost my son.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I wasn't thinking like a businessman.”

“I was barely thinking like a human being.”

Noah moved closer to him.

Adrian put an arm around his shoulders.

“The coffin was sealed.”

“The funeral home said hospital instructions prohibited opening it.”

Chen took notes.

“Who handled the funeral arrangements?”

“Gideon.”

“Your lawyer.”

“Yes.”

“Who recommended the funeral home?”

“Malcolm.”

The room went quiet.

Detective Chen closed her notebook.

“We located Dr. Keller’s current address.”

“And?”

“Empty.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“For how long?”

“Neighbors say he left two days ago.”

“Before the gala.”

“Yes.”

Hannah turned.

“So they knew something was going to happen.”

Chen nodded.

“Possibly.”

Noah suddenly spoke.

“Mr. Keller came to see me.”

Everyone looked at him.

Adrian’s face changed.

“When?”

“In the blue room.”

“How many times?”

Noah held up several fingers, then stopped.

“I don't remember.”

“What did he do?”

“He looked at my teeth.”

Adrian frowned.

“My teeth?”

“And my eyes.”

“Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

Noah thought.

“He took blood.”

Chen and Adrian exchanged a look.

Trust verification.

The boy needed to be proven biologically alive.

Dr. Keller had probably provided medical documentation to the trust.

Noah continued.

“He always had a silver case.”

“What was inside it?”

“Needles.”

“Anything else?”

Noah nodded.

“A stamp.”

“What kind of stamp?”

“I don't know.”

He hesitated.

“And pictures.”

“Pictures of what?”

“Me.”

Adrian felt sick.

“Recent pictures?”

Noah nodded.

Detective Chen stood.

“We need the trust records immediately.”

Adrian called his corporate general counsel.

Not Gideon.

Never Gideon again.

Twenty minutes later, Vale Global’s legitimate legal department accessed archived trust documentation.

The answer arrived quickly.

Every six months for the past three years, someone had submitted a confidential beneficiary verification package for Noah Vale.

Photographs.

Medical samples.

Signed physician statements.

Noah was legally alive inside the trust.

Yet officially dead everywhere else.

More disturbing was the guardian authorization.

Adrian requested the document.

An electronic copy appeared.

He stared at his own signature.

I, Adrian James Vale, voluntarily relinquish temporary authority over the minor beneficiary Noah Alexander Vale due to emotional incapacity.

Adrian’s blood turned cold.

“I never signed this.”

Detective Chen leaned closer.

The document transferred guardian voting authority to Celeste Vale.

Hannah read the date.

Two weeks after Noah’s funeral.

Adrian remembered those weeks.

He had barely left his bedroom.

Malcolm handled the company.

Celeste handled the house.

Gideon brought papers for him to sign almost daily.

Some related to charitable donations.

Others involved estate planning.

Adrian had signed dozens without reading them.

But not this.

He was certain.

Chen pointed toward the witness signature.

Gideon Sharp.

Then the notarization.

Dr. Matthew Keller.

Three people.

All already connected.

Adrian’s phone rang.

Malcolm.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Adrian answered.

“Where are you?”

Malcolm’s voice sounded concerned.

“I just landed from London.”

“I saw the news.”

“Is it true?”

Adrian said nothing.

Malcolm continued.

“Adrian?”

“Is Noah alive?”

Adrian looked at his son.

“Yes.”

Malcolm exhaled dramatically.

“My God.”

His performance was perfect.

Almost.

Then he made one mistake.

“Is Celeste still at the mansion?”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

Chen noticed.

The public reports had not mentioned Celeste’s location.

“Why are you asking?”

A pause.

Malcolm recovered.

“Because she's your wife.”

“Because I'm worried.”

“Come to the hospital.”

Another pause.

“I think we should meet privately first.”

“No.”

“Adrian—”

“Come see your nephew.”

Silence.

Then Malcolm said something Adrian would replay a hundred times.

“Is he talking?”

Adrian’s expression went blank.

Malcolm realized it.

“I mean, is he able to explain what happened?”

Adrian looked at Chen.

She was already recording the call.

“Noah is talking.”

Another silence.

“And he remembers everything.”

Malcolm disconnected.

No goodbye.

No relief.

No promise to come.

Adrian lowered the phone.

Noah looked up at him.

“Was that Uncle Malcolm?”

“Yes.”

Noah pulled the blanket higher.

“He came to the room once.”

Adrian’s heart began pounding.

“What did he say?”

Noah looked directly at his father.

May you like

“He told Mrs. Vale they should've gotten rid of me before I learned to remember faces.”
