Chapter 12 - The Empty Bed

Adrian did not remember the drive back to the hospital.

He remembered arriving.

He remembered running.

He remembered Noah’s empty bed.

The blanket lay on the floor.

A stuffed bear Hannah had bought him earlier remained beneath the chair.

The window was locked.

The hallway camera had been disabled for ninety seconds.

Ninety seconds.

That was all Malcolm needed.

Adrian turned on everyone.

Hospital administrators.

Security.

Federal agents.

His own remaining staff.

Detective Chen finally grabbed his shoulders.

“Adrian.”

He pushed her hands away.

“My son is gone again.”

“I know.”

“You told me this place was secure.”

“I know.”

“You told me—”

“I know!”

Her shout stopped him.

Chen lowered her voice.

“Malcolm wants you uncontrolled.”

“Do not give him what he wants.”

Adrian stared.

The succession instrument.

Emotional instability.

Public collapse.

Every reaction could be used against him.

Adrian forced himself to breathe.

“What do we know?”

Chen nodded.

That was better.

“The abductor used federal credentials.”

“High-quality counterfeit.”

“Entered during a deliberately triggered fire alarm.”

“Two hospital employees received texts instructing them to evacuate another wing.”

“Texts appeared to come from hospital administration.”

“Vehicle?”

“Black ambulance.”

“Plate cloned.”

“Traffic cameras?”

“Lost it near Queensboro.”

Adrian looked at Edgar.

The old butler had been brought in under guard.

“You said you know where Malcolm is.”

Edgar nodded.

“Or where he's going.”

“Talk.”

Edgar’s eyes dropped.

“I served your father for forty-two years.”

“I don't care.”

“Charles Vale built a property nobody knows about.”

“Malcolm knows.”

“What property?”

“A house in the Adirondacks.”

“Not listed under Vale.”

“Your father used it when he wanted privacy.”

“Malcolm restored it years ago.”

Chen immediately began tracing.

“What is the address?”

Edgar gave it.

Adrian looked at him.

“Why help now?”

Edgar’s face changed.

“Because Malcolm shot me.”

That explained the bloody sleeve.

“He believes everyone connected to the original plan is now a liability.”

“Celeste.”

“Gideon.”

“Victor.”

“Me.”

“And Noah?”

Edgar looked away.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Look at me.”

Edgar did.

“What does Malcolm plan to do with my son?”

“He needs Noah to say something on camera.”

“What?”

“That Celeste imprisoned him.”

“That you frightened him.”

“That Malcolm rescued him.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“He expects a seven-year-old to cooperate?”

“He expects fear to cooperate.”

Adrian’s expression became lethal.

Edgar continued.

“After the recording, Malcolm intends to petition for emergency custody.”

“He has a judge.”

“Name.”

“Arthur Wexler.”

Chen’s head snapped around.

Wexler sat on the state commercial court.

He was also a longtime Vale Foundation donor.

Adrian remembered him at the gala.

One of the people watching Hannah break open the wall.

The conspiracy included a judge.

Chen stepped aside to make calls.

Adrian remained with Edgar.

“Why did you help kill Isabelle?”

Edgar’s eyes filled with something resembling shame.

“Your father asked me to protect the company.”

“My father was dead by then.”

“I know.”

“Then don't use him as an excuse.”

Edgar looked older.

“Malcolm convinced me Isabelle would destroy Vale Global.”

“She had evidence of illegal transfers.”

“She was going to the authorities.”

“So you sabotaged her car.”

“I gave Victor access.”

“That's the same thing.”

Edgar did not argue.

Adrian’s voice shook.

“You watched me bury her.”

“Yes.”

“You watched Noah cry for his mother.”

“Yes.”

“And three years later, you helped hide him.”

Edgar whispered.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because once you've helped people cross one line, they make sure every road leads to the next.”

Adrian stared at him.

“That's not remorse.”

“No.”

Edgar looked down.

“It's cowardice.”

For the first time, Adrian agreed with him.

Chen returned.

“The Adirondack property exists.”

“Satellite confirms vehicle activity.”

Adrian headed toward the door.

“You're not going.”

Chen said.

He stopped.

“My son is there.”

“Which means Malcolm expects you.”

“Good.”

“No.”

Chen stepped in front of him.

“He wants footage of you behaving recklessly.”

“He wants you trespassing.”

“Threatening him.”

“Breaking custody orders he may already have fabricated.”

Adrian’s face twisted.

“So I stand here?”

“You help me beat him correctly.”

Adrian hated it.

But he listened.

Federal teams deployed.

Meanwhile, Elliot arrived carrying the decrypted server access hardware.

“We found another recording.”

Adrian turned.

“From when?”

“Two nights before the gala.”

They played it.

Malcolm’s voice.

“Once Noah is discovered, Adrian becomes unusable.”

Celeste answered.

“Noah isn't part of your board games anymore.”

“He was always part of the board game.”

“I won't let you hurt him.”

“You already did.”

Silence.

Then Celeste spoke.

“If you touch Noah, I'll tell Adrian everything.”

Malcolm laughed.

“He'll never forgive you.”

“I know.”

“And he'll destroy you.”

“I know.”

“Then what do you gain?”

Celeste’s voice softened.

“Maybe for once, this isn't about what I gain.”

The recording ended.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Elliot looked at him.

“She tried.”

Adrian's answer was immediate.

“She tried three years late.”

“Yes.”

Elliot did not defend her further.

Another file loaded automatically.

This one was recorded the day before the gala.

Malcolm and Victor.

Victor said.

“What about Hannah?”

Malcolm answered.

“Celeste thinks the maid can expose the room safely.”

“Let her.”

Victor sounded surprised.

“You want Noah found?”

“Yes.”

“Then we move to phase two.”

“What phase two?”

Malcolm’s voice became almost cheerful.

“We give Adrian his son back.”

A pause.

“Then we take him away again.”

Adrian stared at the speakers.

Malcolm had planned the second kidnapping before the first rescue even happened.

The wall had never been the end.

It had been the beginning.

Chen’s phone rang.

She answered.

Then looked toward Adrian.

“The tactical team reached the Adirondack house.”

Adrian stood.

“And?”

Chen’s silence told him first.

The house was empty.

On a table upstairs, investigators found a tablet.

Its screen displayed a live video feed.

Noah sat in a chair somewhere else.

Malcolm stood behind him.

A message appeared.

ADRIAN ALONE.

MIDNIGHT.
