Chapter 15 - The Sins of Charles Vale

Malcolm refused to explain.
Naturally.
He demanded attorneys.
Naturally.
Then he demanded immediate recognition of his rights as vice chairman of Vale Global.
That demand aged poorly.
Before sunrise, the board suspended him unanimously.
Federal prosecutors froze accounts connected to seventeen shell companies.
Judge Arthur Wexler was placed under investigation.
Victor Lang began negotiating.
Gideon Sharp began negotiating faster.
Edgar Pike requested protective custody.
Dr. Keller remained missing.
Celeste underwent surgery for the gunshot wound to her shoulder.
Noah returned to the hospital.
Adrian remained with him.
For twelve peaceful hours, nobody disappeared.
Then Isabelle’s encrypted archive finished decrypting.
Elliot came to the hospital carrying three hard drives.
Adrian saw his expression.
“Malcolm wasn't lying.”
Elliot shook his head.
“Not completely.”
Noah was asleep.
Hannah remained with him while Adrian and Elliot moved into an adjoining conference room.
Detective Chen joined them.
The first file was dated seven years earlier.
Isabelle had discovered that Charles Vale, Adrian and Malcolm’s father, maintained a network of secret accounts.
Some were legal.
Others were not.
He had used political connections.
Private investigators.
Off-book security teams.
He also maintained files on his own sons.
Adrian opened his.
Photographs.
School reports.
Medical records.
Relationships.
Private correspondence.
Even records from therapy sessions Adrian attended after college.
“He surveilled us.”
Adrian whispered.
Elliot nodded.
“He surveilled everyone.”
Malcolm’s file was thicker.
It documented behavioral problems beginning in adolescence.
Aggression.
Theft.
Blackmail.
Charles repeatedly protected Malcolm from consequences.
Why?
Because Malcolm reminded him of himself.
Isabelle had written notes in the margins.
CHARLES DID NOT CREATE MALCOLM’S CRUELTY, BUT HE TAUGHT HIM POWER COULD ERASE CONSEQUENCES.
Adrian stared.
His father had been revered publicly.
Business magazines called him a visionary.
Universities named buildings after him.
Adrian remembered something else.
Fear.
His father’s silence when disappointed.
Employees disappearing after mistakes.
People apologizing even when Charles was wrong.
Adrian had spent his entire adult life trying to lead differently.
Apparently not far enough.
Another file involved Elliot.
Charles had an affair with Rebecca Mercer.
When she became pregnant, Charles paid her to disappear.
Elliot grew up without knowing his father.
Charles monitored him from afar but never acknowledged him.
Malcolm discovered Elliot years later.
He saw a threat.
Isabelle saw family.
“She was going to tell you.”
Elliot said.
“When?”
“The week she died.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You knew?”
“She told me she was ready.”
“Why didn't you tell me after?”
“Because she was dead.”
Elliot looked ashamed.
“And I was afraid.”
Another cowardice.
Another silence.
Adrian was beginning to understand how tragedies grew.
Not from one villain.
From many people deciding fear excused silence.
Chen opened the final directory.
PROJECT SUCCESSION.
Charles Vale had built the trust structure that later allowed Malcolm to exploit Noah’s voting rights.
Why?
Because Charles distrusted both sons.
He believed future heirs needed centralized guardianship.
He created emergency mechanisms allowing one family representative enormous control during periods of incapacity.
Malcolm merely weaponized them.
Adrian rubbed his face.
“My father built the gun.”
“And Malcolm pulled the trigger.”
Chen replied.
Elliot opened another audio file.
Charles Vale’s voice.
Recorded ten years earlier.
Malcolm spoke with him.
“You always choose Adrian.”
Charles laughed.
“I choose whoever protects the name.”
“He's weak.”
“He's disciplined.”
“He asks permission.”
“He considers consequences.”
“That is what weak men call fear.”
Charles paused.
Then said something chilling.
“One day, Malcolm, you'll learn the difference between controlling a company and deserving one.”
Malcolm answered.
“I'll own it either way.”
The recording ended.
Adrian stared.
The resentment had existed for decades.
Noah stirred in the next room.
Adrian stood immediately.
Before leaving, Chen stopped him.
“One more thing.”
She opened a document recovered from Malcolm’s private server.
A contingency plan.
If arrested, Malcolm intended to trigger a corporate debt event that could force Vale Global into emergency restructuring.
Billions in loans would become callable.
Employees could lose jobs.
Investors could panic.
Adrian understood immediately.
“He built a dead-man switch.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Over several years.”
“How long do we have?”
Chen looked at the timestamp.
“Thirty-six hours.”
Adrian stared at the document.
Malcolm had prepared to burn the empire if he could not own it.
Noah walked into the doorway holding Hannah’s hand.
“Dad?”
Adrian turned.
Noah looked worried.
“Are we losing the house?”
Adrian almost smiled.
“No.”
“The company?”
“Maybe some of it.”
Noah thought.
“Is that bad?”
Adrian looked at the boy who had survived three years with almost nothing.
A mattress.
Books.
Crackers.
A recorder.
“No.”
He answered.
“Not compared to losing you.”
Noah nodded as though this were obvious.
Then he looked at Elliot.
“Eli.”
Elliot froze.
Noah walked toward him.
“You came back.”
Elliot’s eyes filled.
“I told you I would.”
Noah hugged him.
Elliot bent awkwardly, then wrapped his arms around the child.
Adrian watched.
For the first time, he did not see a secret.
He saw a brother.
Then Noah whispered something against Elliot’s coat.
“I hid the other card.”
Elliot pulled back.
“What other card?”
“The one Mrs. Vale doesn't know about.”
Adrian approached.
“Where?”
Noah looked at him.
“In Uncle Malcolm’s office.”
Everyone froze.
“When did you put it there?”
“Before he took me.”
Adrian stared.
Noah had been kidnapped from the hospital.
“How could you put anything in Malcolm’s office?”
Noah explained.
The hospital abductor first brought him through Vale Global.
Malcolm questioned him there before moving him upstairs.
Noah had one of Elliot’s miniature memory cards hidden inside his sock.
He slipped it beneath Malcolm’s desk.
It automatically recorded sound.
Elliot’s face changed.
“If it's still there—”
“It may contain Malcolm triggering the dead-man switch.”
Adrian grabbed his coat.
The race was no longer only to prove the past.

They had thirty-six hours to prevent Malcolm from destroying the future.
