Chapter 13 - Midnight at Isabelle’s Grave

The cemetery closed at dusk.

At eleven fifty-eight, Adrian entered through the eastern gate.

Alone.

At least, that was what Malcolm was meant to believe.

Detective Chen’s people were positioned beyond the perimeter.

No visible weapons.

No close vehicles.

No lights.

Malcolm had warned that Noah would be moved if Adrian brought police within two hundred yards.

Adrian accepted the risk.

Isabelle’s grave stood beneath an old oak tree.

Her marble monument gleamed beneath the moonlight.

Beside it stood Noah’s empty grave.

For three years, Adrian had visited both.

One contained his wife.

The other contained nothing.

He stopped between them.

A speaker hidden somewhere crackled.

“Poetic, isn't it?”

Malcolm.

Adrian looked around.

“Where is Noah?”

“Safe.”

“Show me.”

A projector suddenly illuminated the white side of a mausoleum.

Noah appeared on the image.

He sat on a bed.

No visible injuries.

A camera pointed at him.

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“Noah!”

The boy looked toward someone off camera.

Malcolm’s voice came through the speaker.

“He can't hear you.”

“What do you want?”

“To talk.”

“You kidnapped my son.”

“To negotiate.”

“You murdered my wife.”

Malcolm laughed quietly.

“That's the trouble with recordings.”

“They remove nuance.”

“What nuance exists in cutting someone’s brakes?”

A pause.

“Victor exceeded instructions.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Everyone was blaming Victor.

“You approved it.”

“Prove that.”

“I will.”

“Perhaps.”

Malcolm continued.

“But by then, Vale Global may have collapsed.”

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The thing you actually love.”

Adrian looked at the projection of Noah.

“You still think it's the company.”

“Our father built it.”

“Our grandfather started it.”

“Tens of thousands of people depend on it.”

“And you stole from it.”

“I strengthened it.”

“You siphoned billions.”

“To create strategic reserves.”

“In accounts controlled by you.”

“Because you never had the stomach to make difficult decisions.”

Adrian stared into the darkness.

“You killed Isabelle because she found your theft.”

“I removed a threat.”

The words hung in the air.

Adrian’s pulse quickened.

Malcolm had said it.

Clear enough.

Hopefully Chen’s equipment captured it.

Malcolm continued.

“And Noah?”

Adrian asked.

“Was a complication.”

“He was four.”

“He controlled twenty-eight percent of the voting structure.”

“He was four.”

“Which made him absurdly powerful and dangerously easy for someone else to manipulate.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“So you manipulated him first.”

“I protected the company.”

“You locked a child inside a wall.”

“I never chose the accommodations.”

“Celeste?”

“She became sentimental.”

“Victor became lazy.”

“Gideon became greedy.”

“Everyone disappointed me eventually.”

Adrian understood.

Malcolm did not see people.

Only instruments.

And broken instruments were discarded.

“What do you want from me?”

“Resign.”

“No.”

“Transfer executive voting control to me for five years.”

“No.”

“Recognize me as Noah’s temporary guardian.”

Adrian looked toward the projected image.

“I would rather burn Vale Global to the ground.”

For the first time, Malcolm sounded angry.

“Our father would despise you.”

“Our father hid another son from us.”

Silence.

Adrian smiled faintly.

“You didn't know I found Elliot.”

Malcolm recovered.

“Elliot is irrelevant.”

“He changes the founder vote.”

“No court will recognize his claim quickly enough.”

“Maybe.”

Adrian looked around.

“But you sound nervous.”

The projection flickered.

Noah disappeared.

Adrian’s body tightened.

“Put him back.”

Malcolm ignored him.

“You have until six tomorrow morning.”

“Sign the transfer.”

“Withdraw your accusations.”

“Publicly state Celeste orchestrated Noah’s confinement without your knowledge.”

“And then?”

“Noah comes home.”

“You expect me to believe you.”

“No.”

Malcolm’s voice softened.

“I expect you to choose your son.”

Adrian thought of the last three years.

Malcolm had always understood the same weakness.

Adrian would sacrifice anything for family.

Money.

Power.

Reputation.

Even judgment.

That weakness had allowed Malcolm to control him.

But Malcolm had misunderstood one thing.

Family was not a weakness when the family finally knew the truth.

Adrian looked toward Isabelle’s grave.

“I'll sign.”

A pause.

Malcolm sounded pleased.

“I knew you would.”

“But I want proof Noah is alive first.”

“You saw him.”

“Live.”

“You saw—”

“Let me speak to him.”

Malcolm hesitated.

Adrian waited.

Finally, the speaker went silent.

Thirty seconds later, Adrian’s phone rang from an unknown number.

He answered.

“Daddy?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Noah.”

“Daddy.”

“I'm here.”

“I'm sorry.”

Adrian’s eyes opened.

“For what?”

“I lost the bear Hannah gave me.”

His voice trembled.

Adrian almost broke.

“I'll buy you a thousand bears.”

“No.”

Noah whispered.

“I liked that one.”

Adrian smiled through tears.

“Then we'll find that one.”

Someone moved near Noah.

Malcolm.

Adrian heard it faintly.

“Noah.”

“Yes?”

“Remember the recorder.”

The line became silent.

Adrian wondered if he had said too much.

Then Noah whispered.

“The red light is on.”

The call disconnected.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Recorder.

Red light.

Noah had another recorder.

Or had activated something nearby.

Malcolm might be recording himself without knowing it.

Adrian turned toward the cemetery exit.

The speaker crackled one final time.

“Six o'clock, little brother.”

Adrian looked back.

“Malcolm?”

“Yes?”

“You made one mistake.”

Malcolm laughed.

“Only one?”

“You taught Noah to hide.”

The speaker went dead.

When Adrian reached Chen, she already had teams analyzing the call.

Elliot listened to Noah’s last words.

The red light is on.

His face changed.

“I know where he is.”

Adrian grabbed his arm.

“Where?”

“The old recorder system.”

“What?”

“The devices I gave Noah weren't standard.”

“I modified them.”

“When active, they connect to a local relay if one is nearby.”

“One relay just came online.”

“Location?”

Elliot turned the laptop around.

A blinking signal appeared over Manhattan.

Not the Adirondacks.

Not a warehouse.

Not a safe house.

Vale Global headquarters.

Adrian stared.

Malcolm had hidden Noah inside the one building nobody thought to search.
