Chapter 10 - THE SECOND DOORWilliam shouted Ethan’s name.

Guests crowded toward the exits.
David climbed onto the stage.
“Stay where you are.”
Few people listened.
The ballroom had turned into a storm of frightened voices and raised phones.
Emma searched the floor.
Ethan’s blanket lay beside the stage.
She picked it up.
A silver button rested beneath it.
Emma recognized the button from Isabella’s ivory gown.
“She took him through the stage corridor.”
David jumped down.
“How do you know?”
“Her dress caught on something.”
William joined them.
“Where does the corridor lead?”
“To the east wing,” David said.
“Her dressing suite is there.”
Police vehicles gathered beyond the gates.
The mansion’s electronic locks prevented them from entering.
Isabella still controlled the central system.
David used Caroline’s key card to open a service door.
Emma, William, and David entered the corridor.
Two officers followed after forcing their way through a side entrance.
The passage ended behind a mirrored wall in Isabella’s dressing suite.
The room was empty.
Closet doors stood open.
Drawers had been pulled out.
Several passports lay across a table.
Each carried a different name.
Isabel Voss.
Isabella Laurent.
Elena Marlowe.
A final passport showed the name Isabella Sterling.
William stared at the documents.
“She never intended to stay.”
Emma looked around the room.
“She intended to stay long enough.”
David opened the control panel.
The mansion map appeared.
A moving signal flashed beneath the east garden.
“That is the master card she took from Miles.”
William looked at the map.
“There is nothing beneath the east garden.”
David enlarged the image.
“There is another tunnel.”
Emma remembered Ethan’s words.
The truth was hidden behind the garden.
Caroline’s clue had referred not only to the portrait.
She had known about the passage.
They found the entrance inside Isabella’s wardrobe.
Behind a row of gowns stood a narrow steel door.
David used the second card.
The door opened onto a staircase.
William went first.
The officers followed.
Emma stayed close behind them.
The underground passage smelled damp.
Small emergency lights illuminated the floor.
They heard an engine starting in the distance.
The tunnel ended at a stone chamber beneath the garden.
A black vehicle waited beside a ramp leading toward the river road.
Doctor Vale sat behind the steering wheel.
Isabella pulled Ethan toward the rear door.
The boy fought against her grip.
“Stop,” William shouted.
Vale pressed the accelerator.
The vehicle moved forward.
David reached a control panel near the wall.
He lowered a security barrier across the ramp.
Vale slammed on the brakes.
The vehicle stopped inches from the barrier.
Isabella opened the rear door.
She held Ethan in front of her.
The officers raised their weapons but did not approach.
“Stay back,” Isabella said.
Emma saw that she held a small medical injector.
She pressed it near Ethan’s arm.
William froze.
“Do not hurt him.”
“I never wanted to hurt him.”
Ethan stared forward.
“You locked me in the dark.”
“You forced me to protect myself.”
Emma stepped away from the officers.
Isabella looked at her.
“You.”
Emma stopped.
“You caused all of this.”
“No.”
Emma kept her voice calm.
“I heard him.”
“You were paid to clean rooms.”
“I was also paid to notice when something was wrong.”
“No one notices people like you.”
Emma looked directly at her.
“That was your mistake.”
Isabella glanced toward the vehicle.
Vale had begun entering commands into the dashboard.
David noticed.
“He is trying to open the barrier remotely.”
One of the officers moved closer.
Isabella raised the injector.
The officer stopped.
William’s voice shook.
“Take the car.”
“Take the money.”
“Take anything.”
“Let Ethan go.”
Isabella smiled bitterly.
“You still think this is about money.”
“What else could it be?”
“Control.”
Her eyes moved toward the mansion above them.
“For one month, every person in that ballroom bowed to me.”
“They called me Isabella Sterling.”
“They treated my opinions as decisions.”
“I was no longer invisible.”
Emma understood the truth.
Isabella had not only wanted William’s fortune.
She had wanted his name, his authority, and the fear it created.
Ethan spoke quietly.
“You’re still invisible.”
Isabella looked down at him.
“You are only wearing my mother’s name.”
The words struck her.
Her grip tightened.
Emma saw Ethan wince.
She took another step.
“Isabella, look at me.”
Isabella raised her eyes.
Emma held out the blanket.
“He is cold.”
For a moment, Isabella’s attention shifted.
Ethan moved.
He dropped his weight and pulled away.
William rushed forward.
The injector fell.
Emma kicked it beneath the vehicle.
William reached Ethan and carried him toward the officers.
Isabella ran for the driver’s door.
Vale opened it.
David hit the emergency barrier control.
A second steel gate dropped behind the vehicle.
The car became trapped between two barriers.
Vale accelerated.
The tires spun against the stone.
Officers surrounded the vehicle.
Isabella stared through the window.

The graceful new wife had disappeared.
All that remained was a frightened woman with nowhere left to run.
