Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN NAMED ISABEL VOSSDavid connected Caroline’s archive to the ballroom presentation system.

The mansion’s main screens remained controlled from Isabella’s suite.
The independent system could override them for only a few minutes.
“We need stronger proof,” David said.
“The basement recordings show kidnapping and unlawful confinement.”
“It may be enough for the police.”
“It may not be enough to expose everyone involved.”
William looked at the financial files.
“We need the connection between Isabella, Vale, and Miles.”
Emma opened another folder in Caroline’s archive.
It was labeled ISABEL VOSS.
Inside were newspaper reports, court records, and photographs.
Isabel Voss had worked as an administrative consultant for several private medical companies.
Each company had served wealthy elderly clients or families with large trusts.
Two clients had been declared mentally incompetent shortly before control of their assets changed hands.
A third client had died while challenging unexplained withdrawals from his foundation.
No criminal charges had been filed.
In every case, Miles Keene or one of his business partners had handled the legal documents.
Doctor Adrian Vale had signed medical reports.
Isabel Voss had disappeared after investigators began asking questions.
Six months later, Isabella Laurent appeared in New York.
She entered William’s social circle through a charity event.
She claimed to have grown up in France.
She spoke with an elegant accent.
She presented herself as the daughter of an art dealer.
None of it was true.
Ethan studied the photographs.
“She changed her hair.”
“She changed more than that,” David said.
William looked at his wedding photograph on one of the files.
The woman beside him suddenly seemed like a stranger.
“How did Caroline find this?”
Emma turned to another journal page.
“Your wife hired a private investigator.”
David opened a folder containing audio files.
One recording captured a conversation between Isabella and Miles inside Caroline’s office.
Caroline must have hidden a microphone.
Isabella’s voice came first.
“William will sign whatever is placed in front of him.”
Miles answered.
“Not while Caroline is reviewing the foundation accounts.”
“Then make her look unreliable.”
“Vale is already adjusting the reports.”
“What about the boy?”
“Ethan is nine.”
“He will become eighteen.”
“That gives us time.”
“No.”
Isabella’s voice became colder.
“It gives us a deadline.”
William stopped the recording.
Ethan looked at him.
“What did she mean?”
William could not answer.
Emma knelt beside the boy.
“She meant that your mother made sure the money would belong to you when you became an adult.”
“She wanted to take it?”
“She wanted to control it.”
Ethan looked toward the ceiling.
“Is that why she locked me up?”
“Yes.”
The boy absorbed the answer quietly.
He had spent five days believing his father had abandoned him.
Now he understood that Isabella had feared him.
Emma wished she could take that knowledge away.
William placed a hand on his son’s shoulder.
“I should have protected you.”
Ethan did not move away.
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have known.”
Emma looked at William.
“Regret can wait.”
He met her eyes.
“She is still upstairs.”
The computer flashed a warning.
Someone was trying to access the independent archive.
David checked the source.
“The request is coming from Isabella’s dressing suite.”
“How did she discover the archive?”
“She may have seen the login attempt.”
A deletion command appeared on the screen.
David blocked it.
Another command followed.
The system began shutting down sections of the archive.
“We have less than five minutes before she breaks through.”
William looked at the ballroom feed.
Isabella stood on the stage beside Doctor Vale.
Several men in medical uniforms waited near the exits.
Miles had joined them.
He had changed into a clean suit.
Isabella lifted the microphone again.
“My husband is frightened and confused.”
“He may resist the people trying to help him.”
William turned away from the screen.
“She is preparing the guests to see me fight.”
Emma looked at the maintenance door.
“Then you cannot walk into that ballroom alone.”
“I’m not hiding beneath my own house.”
“You’re not hiding.”
Emma held up Caroline’s recorder.
“You’re choosing the moment when the truth speaks louder than she does.”
David finished copying the archive onto the flash drives.
“The system can project three minutes of video before Isabella’s network shuts it down.”
“Three minutes is enough,” William said.
“For which recording?”
William looked at Ethan.
“The one that proves my son was never in Maine.”
Emma shook her head.
“That shows what she did.”
“It does not show why she did it.”
Ethan reached toward the computer.
“Play Mom’s recording.”
William looked at him.
“Are you sure?”
“She wanted people to know.”
David prepared the files.
Caroline’s warning would play first.
The footage of Ethan’s confinement would follow.
The financial documents would appear last.
Above them, Isabella called William’s name.
“Please come out.”
Her voice broke perfectly.
Several guests applauded her courage.

William listened.
Then he climbed the ladder toward the orchestra pit.
