Chapter 3 - FIVE DAYS OF LIESWilliam crossed the boiler room in three long steps.

Ethan did not run toward him.

He remained behind Emma.

That hesitation broke something in William’s face.

“Ethan, what happened?”

The boy stared at his father.

“You sent me here.”

William stopped.

“I did not.”

“Isabella said you wanted me locked away.”

“I thought you were with Aunt Claire.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I never went to Maine.”

William looked at Miles.

The attorney was still on the floor with David standing over him.

“Miles, explain this.”

Miles said nothing.

William turned toward Emma.

She saw anger building in his eyes.

Not anger at her.

Anger at the truth taking shape around him.

“Why is my son in this basement?”

Emma opened her mouth.

Isabella entered before she could answer.

Two private security guards followed her.

Her ivory gown brushed across the dirty concrete as though she had stepped into the wrong world.

She looked at Ethan.

For one brief second, her calm expression vanished.

Then the graceful smile returned.

“William, thank goodness.”

She hurried toward him.

“I have been searching everywhere.”

Emma could not believe the ease of the lie.

Isabella reached for Ethan.

The boy moved farther behind Emma.

Isabella’s hand froze.

William noticed.

“What is going on?”

Isabella placed a hand over her heart.

“Ethan experienced a severe emotional episode five days ago.”

“He was supposed to be in Maine.”

“That was the explanation we gave the household to protect his privacy.”

“We?”

Isabella glanced toward Miles.

“The doctor believed Ethan needed complete separation from familiar triggers.”

William looked around the basement.

“You placed him behind a hidden wall.”

“The medical suite was selected for security.”

“There is no medical equipment.”

“It was removed earlier today.”

Ethan spoke from behind Emma.

“She’s lying.”

Isabella turned toward him.

Her eyes became cold.

“Ethan, you are confused.”

“You took my phone.”

“You tried to contact strangers.”

“I tried to call my father.”

“You were not thinking clearly.”

Ethan’s voice rose.

“You locked the door.”

William moved between Isabella and his son.

“That is enough.”

Isabella’s expression softened immediately.

“William, please listen to me.”

“No.”

“I was protecting him.”

“You told me he was in Maine.”

“Because you had important meetings.”

William stared at her as though he no longer recognized the woman he had married.

“You decided that my business meetings mattered more than telling me where my son was?”

“You were already overwhelmed.”

“You do not decide what truth I can handle.”

The guards exchanged uncertain looks.

David held the gun he had taken from Miles.

He removed the ammunition and placed both pieces on the floor.

“William, you need to shut down the mansion.”

“Why?”

David nodded toward the silver box.

“Because this is bigger than Ethan’s disappearance.”

Isabella’s gaze locked onto the box.

Her fingers tightened against her gown.

“That belongs to me.”

Ethan shook his head.

“It belonged to Mom.”

William stepped toward the box.

Isabella blocked his path.

“Caroline was not well when she prepared those materials.”

“How do you know what is inside?”

Silence spread through the boiler room.

William’s question remained between them.

Isabella searched for an answer.

Miles finally spoke.

“We should discuss this privately.”

David looked down at him.

“You lost the right to privacy when you helped imprison a child.”

One of Isabella’s guards reached toward the radio on his belt.

David saw the movement.

“Do not call anyone.”

The guard hesitated.

William looked at both men.

“Who gave you your orders?”

Neither answered.

“Who signs your paychecks?”

“Sterling Residential Services,” one guard said.

“I own Sterling Residential Services.”

The guard lowered his eyes.

Isabella stepped closer to William.

“You are letting frightened employees manipulate you.”

Emma felt William’s attention shift toward her.

She knew what Isabella was doing.

She was reminding him of the distance between a billionaire and a housekeeper.

She was making the truth sound like a class grievance.

Emma straightened.

“I followed a child’s cry.”

“That is all I did.”

Isabella gave her a pitying smile.

“And you misunderstood what you saw.”

Emma removed her phone from her pocket.

She had recorded everything since entering the boiler room.

The signal blocker had prevented her from making calls.

It had not stopped the phone from recording.

“I understood enough.”

Isabella’s face hardened.

William held out his hand.

“Give me the phone.”

Emma gave it to him.

He played the recording.

Ethan’s frightened voice filled the room.

“She said my father didn’t want me anymore.”

William listened without moving.

Then Isabella’s voice came through the basement speaker.

“You cannot protect him.”

The recording ended.

William returned the phone to Emma.

He looked at his new wife.

“Tell the guests the gala is over.”

Isabella did not move.

William’s voice dropped.

“Now.”

Isabella glanced toward Miles.

It was brief.

It was almost invisible.

David saw it.

Emma saw it too.

The attorney suddenly grabbed the unloaded gun from the floor.

He did not aim it at William.

He threw it at the boiler controls.

The metal struck a red emergency switch.

Sirens erupted throughout the basement.

Steam burst from a pipe.

The lights went dark.

Someone seized Ethan.

The boy screamed Emma’s name.
