Chapter 6 - CAROLINE’S LAST WARNINGWilliam held the photograph beneath the library lamp.

It had been taken nearly three years earlier.
Caroline stood in front of a medical research building.
Isabella wore a white laboratory coat.
Doctor Adrian Vale stood beside her.
William looked at his new wife through the closed library doors as though he could see through the wood.
“She told me she had never met Caroline.”
Emma opened the leather journal.
The first pages contained ordinary notes.
Caroline had written about Ethan’s schoolwork, William’s travel schedule, and repairs needed around the mansion.
The later entries were different.
Caroline described unexplained changes to her medication.
She wrote that Doctor Vale had begun visiting when William was away.
She believed someone was accessing the family trust.
She had also noticed Isabella, then using the name Isabel Voss, meeting secretly with Miles Keene.
Emma found the final completed entry.
She read it aloud.
“If anything happens to me, William must know that Ethan is the true target.”
William sat heavily in the desk chair.
Emma continued.
“They cannot control the Sterling family trust while Ethan remains the protected heir.”
Ethan looked at his father.
“What does that mean?”
William struggled to answer.
“It means your mother was trying to protect your future.”
The next sentence was underlined.
“They intend to isolate William, discredit Ethan, and use medical authority to control both of them.”
David opened the silver box.
Inside were financial records, a small digital recorder, and several flash drives.
William picked up one document.
It showed transfers from the Sterling Children’s Foundation to a company named Crown Meridian Health.
“I approved donations to that company.”
David examined the record.
“Crown Meridian does not operate any hospitals.”
William looked at him.
“What does it operate?”
“According to Caroline’s notes, nothing.”
Emma found a photograph of a building with broken windows.
A sign in front identified it as Crown Meridian’s headquarters.
The address was an abandoned warehouse in New Jersey.
William began turning pages faster.
The payments totaled more than eighty million dollars.
Miles Keene had approved every transfer.
Doctor Vale had supplied the medical recommendations.
Isabella had signed the documents as a foundation consultant.
A heavy impact struck the library doors.
The private guards were trying to enter.
“William,” Isabella called.
“The medical team has a court order.”
David looked toward the windows.
“There are people in the courtyard wearing emergency uniforms.”
Emma glanced at the journal.
“Are they real medical workers?”
“I doubt it.”
The doors shook again.
Ethan covered his ears.
William stood.
“This is my house.”
David looked at him.
“At the moment, she controls its locks, cameras, communications, and security staff.”
William seemed to understand the full extent of the trap.
His wealth had not protected him.
It had allowed Isabella to build walls around him without being questioned.
Emma picked up the digital recorder.
A label read LAST CONVERSATION.
She pressed play.
Caroline’s voice filled the library.
She sounded weak but clear.
“William, if you are hearing this, I was right to be afraid.”
William gripped the desk.
Caroline continued.
“Isabel Voss and Adrian Vale altered my medical records after I discovered the foundation transfers.”
“They want you to believe that I became confused near the end.”
“I was not confused.”
“I hid copies of everything where only Ethan would understand the clues.”
Ethan stepped closer to the recorder.
His mother’s voice trembled.
“I am sorry that I could not stay long enough to protect him myself.”
“Trust the people who loved him before your money mattered.”
Emma lowered her eyes.
Caroline had always treated every employee in the mansion with respect.
She remembered birthdays.
She knew whose children were applying to college.
She had trusted people William barely noticed.
The recording continued.
“Miles has prepared documents that can transfer medical authority if William is declared unable to make decisions.”
“Isabel believes grief will make him easy to control.”
William whispered Caroline’s name.
The doors began to crack near the lock.
David picked up the second black card.
“This may access the original security network.”
“Where is it?”
“Caroline installed a separate archive after she became suspicious.”
“Can we reach it?”
David looked toward the ceiling.
“It is beneath the ballroom stage.”
Emma heard another impact against the doors.
The lock splintered.
They had only seconds.
William gathered the flash drives.
Emma took the journal.
David opened a narrow panel behind the bookshelves.
A hidden staircase appeared.
“Caroline showed this to me before she died,” he said.
“Where does it lead?”
“Directly beneath the ballroom.”
Ethan entered first.
Emma followed him.
William paused beside his late wife’s portrait.
“I should have listened to you.”
Then he stepped through the panel.

David closed it behind them.
Seconds later, the library doors burst open.
