Chapter 12 - THE FIREWORKS DIVERSIONBy sunrise, investigators had secured the Sterling mansion.

The gala guests were allowed to leave after giving their contact information.

The hidden basement room was photographed and sealed.

The signal blockers were removed.

The black vehicle beneath the garden was searched.

Inside it, officers discovered cash, passports, and tickets for a private flight leaving before dawn.

Isabella had intended to take Ethan out of the country.

The plan had depended on the gala.

Fireworks had been scheduled at midnight.

Their noise would have covered the vehicle leaving through the river tunnel.

The guests would have believed Ethan was in Maine.

By the time William discovered the truth, forged medical documents could have made every accusation sound like the fantasy of an unstable father.

David spent the morning with investigators.

Emma stayed at the hospital.

Ethan woke just after nine.

For several seconds, he looked around in confusion.

Then he saw sunlight.

The hospital curtains were open.

Traffic moved along the street below.

He sat up.

“There are no locks.”

Emma stood from the chair.

“No hidden locks.”

“Where’s Dad?”

“He went to speak with the doctor.”

Ethan looked toward the door.

“Isabella can’t come here?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

Emma sat beside him.

“There are police officers outside.”

Ethan reached for the cup of water beside his bed.

His hands trembled.

Emma helped him hold it.

“Did my mother know this would happen?”

“She knew Isabella was dangerous.”

“Why didn’t she tell my dad?”

“She tried.”

“Why didn’t he believe her?”

Emma chose her answer carefully.

“Sometimes people reject a frightening truth because believing it would change everything.”

Ethan looked down.

“That’s what Dad did?”

“Yes.”

“Will he do it again?”

William heard the question from the doorway.

He entered slowly.

“No.”

Ethan looked at him.

William sat beside the bed.

“I cannot promise that I will never make another mistake.”

“I can promise that I will never again dismiss your fear because someone else gives me a more convenient explanation.”

Ethan studied his father.

“What happens to Isabella?”

“She will face a judge.”

“And Doctor Vale?”

“He will too.”

“What about Miles?”

“All of them.”

Ethan looked toward Emma.

“And what happens to her?”

William followed his son’s gaze.

“That depends on what Emma wants.”

Emma folded her yellow gloves and placed them on the table.

“I want to finish my statement.”

William almost smiled.

“After that?”

“I want to go home and sleep.”

Ethan looked worried.

“You’re leaving?”

“For one night.”

“What if I hear something?”

William took his son’s hand.

“Then I will listen.”

Ethan did not seem completely convinced.

Emma leaned closer.

“You also have my phone number.”

The boy nodded.

A nurse entered with breakfast.

Ethan stared at the tray.

There were pancakes, fruit, and scrambled eggs.

He touched the edge of the plate.

“Can I choose what I eat?”

The question made William look away.

“Yes,” Emma said.

“You can choose.”

Ethan selected a piece of fruit.

It was a small decision.

After five days without control, it mattered.

Later that morning, the investigator returned with new information.

Caroline’s flash drives contained more than the foundation records.

They also contained copies of William’s true medical history.

Doctor Vale had altered the official files months before the wedding.

He recorded symptoms William never experienced.

He prescribed treatments William never received.

He created the foundation for a future incompetency claim.

Isabella had begun planning the takeover before Caroline died.

William listened without interrupting.

The investigator opened another document.

“There is also evidence that Caroline’s final hospital records were altered.”

The room became still.

William looked toward Ethan.

The investigator lowered her voice.

“We do not yet know whether the alteration affected her treatment.”

William stood.

“Are you saying Isabella caused Caroline’s death?”

“I am saying the evidence requires a separate investigation.”

Ethan heard enough.

“Did they hurt Mom?”

William sat beside him again.

“We do not know.”

The boy looked at Emma.

She would not lie to him.

“The police are going to find out.”

Ethan turned toward the window.

Below them, the city continued moving.

Cars crossed intersections.

People carried coffee into office buildings.

The ordinary world had continued while he was locked behind a wall.

Emma understood that rescuing him had been only the beginning.

The truth about Caroline could break the family all over again.
