Chapter 11 - THE GALA TURNS SILENTThe police escorted Isabella and Doctor Vale back into the mansion.

Their hands were restrained behind them.

Miles Keene had already been detained in the ballroom.

The guests remained under the chandeliers.

No one was laughing now.

Reporters stood near the stage.

Investors whispered in corners.

Several guests who had praised Isabella earlier refused to look at her.

William entered with Ethan in his arms.

The boy rested his head against his father’s shoulder.

Emma walked beside them.

The room became silent again.

A senior investigator approached William.

“My team needs statements from everyone involved.”

“You will have them.”

“We also need access to the mansion’s servers.”

David held up Caroline’s flash drives.

“Start with these.”

Isabella looked at the drives.

Her expression became controlled again.

“You have no idea what is on them.”

David faced her.

“That is why investigators will make copies.”

Miles called out from beside the stage.

“I want my attorney.”

William looked at him.

“You were my attorney.”

“Then you understand my rights.”

“I understand that you used my trust to reach my son.”

Miles looked away.

The investigator ordered officers to separate the suspects.

Isabella was led toward the entrance.

She stopped beside Emma.

“You think they will reward you?”

Emma said nothing.

“William will thank you tonight.”

“Tomorrow, he will remember that you clean his floors.”

Emma looked toward Ethan.

“I did not open that wall for a reward.”

“You opened it because you wanted to feel important.”

“I opened it because a child was crying.”

Isabella’s composure finally broke.

“You ruined my life.”

Emma held her gaze.

“You built your life on locked doors.”

An officer led Isabella away.

The ballroom remained quiet until the front doors closed behind her.

William carried Ethan toward a sofa.

A medical team from a city hospital entered under police supervision.

Ethan refused to release his father’s hand.

Emma stayed near him while the doctors completed a basic examination.

The boy was exhausted and dehydrated.

He needed observation and rest.

The doctor found no immediate life-threatening condition.

William closed his eyes with relief.

Claire Sterling arrived twenty minutes later.

She crossed the ballroom without acknowledging anyone.

Ethan stood when he saw her.

Claire knelt and wrapped him in her arms.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“I should have called you.”

Ethan shook his head.

“She told everyone different stories.”

Claire looked at William.

“What story did she tell you?”

“That he was with you.”

Claire stood.

She slapped her brother.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

William did not react.

“You married a stranger one year after Caroline died.”

“I know.”

“You allowed her to replace staff members who had served this family for years.”

“I know.”

“You let her remove David.”

“I know.”

“You stopped listening to anyone who questioned her.”

William’s voice cracked.

“I know.”

Claire’s anger softened when she saw Ethan watching.

She turned away.

Emma placed the blanket around Ethan’s shoulders.

He looked up at her.

“Are you coming to the hospital?”

Emma hesitated.

William answered for her.

“She is coming wherever you need her.”

Emma looked at him.

“That decision belongs to Ethan.”

The boy took her hand.

“Please come.”

They left the mansion through the main entrance.

Camera flashes illuminated the steps.

William shielded Ethan’s face.

Emma walked on the other side.

Questions filled the night.

“Was Ethan kidnapped?”

“Did Isabella imprison him?”

“Was William declared incompetent?”

“Did Caroline Sterling predict the scheme?”

No one answered.

At the hospital, Ethan was placed in a private room.

William sat beside his bed.

Claire stood near the window.

Emma remained near the door.

Ethan fell asleep holding the edge of her yellow glove.

William watched him.

“I spent years believing money could keep danger outside.”

Emma looked at the sleeping child.

“Danger was already inside.”

William nodded.

“I noticed nothing.”

“You noticed what Isabella wanted you to notice.”

“That is not an excuse.”

“No.”

William looked at her.

“Why did you keep going after the painting moved?”

Emma thought about the weak cry.

“Because he sounded like someone who believed no one was coming.”

William lowered his eyes.

“He believed that because of me.”

Emma did not correct him.

Some guilt could not be erased with comforting words.

It had to become action.
