Chapter 9 - WILLIAM REFUSES THE LIEWilliam emerged beside the stage.

The orchestra musicians moved away in confusion.
Every face in the ballroom turned toward him.
He no longer wore his jacket.
Dust marked his white shirt.
A cut on his cheek had come from the struggle in the boiler room.
He looked nothing like the controlled billionaire who had welcomed the guests earlier.
Isabella lowered the microphone.
Her expression showed concern.
Her eyes showed fury.
“William.”
He stepped into the light.
Several medical workers moved toward him.
William raised one hand.
“Do not touch me.”
The ballroom became silent.
Doctor Vale approached slowly.
“William, you are experiencing an episode.”
“I know exactly what I am experiencing.”
Vale looked toward the guests.
“This is the confusion I described.”
William glanced at the men surrounding the stage.
“You entered my home without my permission.”
“Your wife authorized our presence.”
“She has no authority over me.”
Miles lifted the forged document.
“She does under the emergency agreement you signed.”
William looked at the paper.
Then he looked at the reporters standing near the ballroom entrance.
“I did not sign that document.”
Miles maintained a calm smile.
“Your signature was witnessed.”
“By whom?”
“Doctor Vale and me.”
A murmur moved through the crowd.
Isabella stepped closer.
“We do not have to do this publicly.”
“You made it public when you announced that I was mentally unwell.”
“I was trying to protect your reputation.”
“You were trying to steal my voice.”
Isabella reached for his hand.
He moved away.
Her expression cracked for an instant.
William looked toward the orchestra pit.
That was David’s signal.
The chandeliers dimmed.
The ballroom screens turned black.
Isabella spun toward the control booth.
Caroline Sterling appeared on every screen.
She sat in the old library, wearing a blue sweater.
Her face was tired.
Her voice was steady.
“William, if you are hearing this, I was right to be afraid.”
Guests gasped.
Isabella grabbed the microphone.
“Turn that off.”
The sound continued.
Caroline described the altered records and unexplained transfers.
She named Isabel Voss.
A younger photograph of Isabella appeared beside Caroline’s image.
The guests began whispering.
Isabella dropped the microphone and moved toward the side stairs.
David appeared at the top.
He blocked her path.
The video changed.
Ethan appeared on-screen outside Caroline’s office.
The ballroom watched Isabella seize the note from his hand.
They watched Miles arrive.
They watched the two adults lead the frightened boy behind the painting.
William’s face remained turned toward the screen.
He forced himself to witness every second.
Doctor Vale stepped backward.
Two reporters blocked his path.
One raised a phone.
“Where is Ethan now?”
Vale ignored the question.
The next video showed him entering the hidden basement room.
His voice played throughout the ballroom.
“If you keep refusing the medicine, Isabella will tell your father that you attacked her.”
The guests reacted with horror.
Isabella pushed past David.
“Those recordings are edited.”
Emma emerged from the orchestra pit with Ethan beside her.
The boy still wore the blanket from the basement.
The ballroom fell completely silent.
William turned.
Ethan walked toward him.
Every camera in the room followed the child.
Isabella looked at the boy as though she were seeing a ghost.
Emma stayed close behind him.
William knelt.
Ethan reached for his father.
William embraced him.
The guests saw the truth before anyone explained it.
A child who was supposed to be in Maine had been discovered inside his father’s mansion.
Isabella moved toward the exit.
The ballroom doors locked.
David held up the black master card.
“No one leaves until the authorities arrive.”
Miles raised his voice.
“You cannot detain innocent guests.”
“You are not an innocent guest,” William said.
The screens displayed the foundation transfers.
Eighty million dollars.
Shell companies.
False medical invoices.
Documents carrying Miles’s signature.
The attorney’s face lost its color.
Isabella recovered first.
She turned toward the crowd.
“William is manipulating you.”
“He discovered that I intended to expose his financial misconduct.”
William stood beside Ethan.
“You locked my son behind a wall.”
“I arranged temporary treatment.”
“You told him I did not want him.”
“He is lying.”
The words echoed through the ballroom.
Ethan looked at her.
William stepped in front of his son.
“You will never speak to him again.”
Sirens became audible beyond the mansion gates.
For the first time, Isabella appeared afraid.
Then the ballroom screens went dark.
The lights shut off.
A woman screamed.
Emergency alarms sounded.
Emma felt Ethan’s hand slip from hers.

When the lights returned, he was gone.
Isabella was gone too.
