Chapter 7 - THE CAMERA THAT BLINKEDThe hidden staircase ended beneath the ballroom stage.

Music thundered above them.

The floor vibrated beneath hundreds of dancing feet.

David led them through a low maintenance chamber.

Electrical panels covered one wall.

An older computer terminal stood beneath a row of blinking lights.

David inserted Caroline’s black key card.

The monitor illuminated.

A password request appeared.

William tried Caroline’s birthday.

Access denied.

He tried Ethan’s birthday.

Access denied.

Emma remembered the words from the journal.

Trust the people who loved him before your money mattered.

She looked at Ethan.

“What did your mother call you when you were little?”

Ethan thought for a moment.

“Bright Star.”

Emma typed the phrase without a space.

The system opened.

David stared at the list of files.

“Caroline built an independent recording archive.”

“How far back does it go?” William asked.

“Three years.”

William looked toward the stage above them.

“Find the basement.”

David searched the archived feeds.

Videos appeared from hallways, offices, and service corridors.

The cameras had recorded without displaying visible lights.

Caroline had watched the people who thought they were watching her.

David opened a video dated five days earlier.

Ethan appeared outside Caroline’s old office.

He carried a framed photograph.

Isabella followed him into the room.

The video had audio.

“What are you doing here?” Isabella asked.

“I wanted a picture of Mom.”

“You were told never to enter this office.”

“It’s my mother’s office.”

Ethan opened a desk drawer.

He removed a folded note.

Isabella seized it.

Her expression changed when she read the message.

“Where did you find this?”

“In Mom’s book.”

Isabella grabbed Ethan’s arm.

The video did not show anything graphic.

It did show the fear on the boy’s face.

She called Miles.

The attorney arrived minutes later.

Together, they led Ethan toward the hidden hallway.

William watched without blinking.

“They walked past me that morning.”

He remembered seeing Isabella and Miles near the east staircase.

Isabella had told him they were discussing legal documents.

David opened another video.

It showed Doctor Vale entering the basement room with a medical bag.

He gave Ethan a cup.

The boy refused it.

Vale threatened to tell William that Ethan had become dangerous.

Another recording showed Isabella ordering the staff to pack a suitcase.

She instructed the driver to take the empty luggage to a private airport.

The driver later returned without Ethan.

The trip to Maine had been staged.

William’s face became rigid.

“We send this to the authorities.”

“The network is still blocked,” David said.

“Can you restore it?”

“Not without reaching the central control room.”

“Where is that?”

“Behind Isabella’s dressing suite.”

Emma listened to the ballroom.

The music stopped.

A microphone clicked above them.

Isabella’s voice filled the ballroom.

“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience.”

William looked toward the ceiling.

Isabella continued.

“My husband has experienced a sudden medical emergency.”

A wave of shocked voices moved through the guests.

William’s eyes widened.

Isabella spoke with controlled sadness.

“For his privacy and safety, medical professionals will be escorting him from the property.”

Emma understood.

Isabella was changing the story.

She was no longer trying to hide only Ethan.

She intended to remove William too.

Isabella continued.

“William has struggled privately since Caroline’s passing.”

“He has refused to seek the treatment he deserves.”

“I ask that you respect our family during this painful time.”

The ballroom filled with sympathetic murmurs.

William looked at the forged document granting Isabella medical authority.

“She is declaring me incompetent.”

David clicked through the system.

“There are already digital medical records supporting her statement.”

Doctor Vale had prepared months of false reports.

The records described confusion, paranoia, and unstable behavior.

William shook his head.

“No one will believe them.”

Emma looked toward the wealthy guests above.

“They will believe what appears official.”

The ballroom was filled with investors, reporters, attorneys, and public officials.

If William were dragged through the room while Isabella wept beside him, the story would be established before sunrise.

David enlarged the security map.

“We have another problem.”

A group of men had entered the corridors surrounding the stage.

They wore medical uniforms.

The maintenance chamber had only two exits.

One led to the orchestra pit.

The other led back toward the library.

Both were being watched.

Ethan pointed toward the computer screen.

One live camera remained active in the ballroom.

A small red light blinked beneath the lens.

“That camera can see the stage.”

David nodded.

“It can also project video onto the ballroom screens.”

William looked at Caroline’s archived recordings.

For the first time since entering the basement, he smiled.

It was not a happy smile.

May you like

It was the expression of a man who had finally understood his opponent’s mistake.

“Then let’s give Isabella the medical emergency she announced.”
