Chapter 3 - THE QUESTION ETHAN COULD NOT TAKE BACK

“Is she mine?”

The question hung in the east parlor like smoke.

Rosa stared at Ethan.

For three years, she had imagined this moment in a hundred different ways.

In some versions, Ethan was angry.

In others, he was relieved.

Sometimes he took Lily into his arms immediately.

Sometimes he walked away.

But Rosa had never imagined telling him the truth while their daughter was crying on a marble floor.

“Yes.”

The word barely left her mouth.

Ethan’s face changed.

Victoria stepped forward.

“You cannot possibly believe her.”

Ethan did not look at his fiancée.

His eyes remained on Lily.

Rosa had already gathered the little girl into her arms.

Lily clung to her mother’s uniform.

“Mama, my head hurts.”

Every thought inside Ethan disappeared.

He crossed the room.

“We’re going to the hospital.”

Victoria reached for his arm.

“Ethan, the wedding planner is arriving in twenty minutes.”

He finally looked at her.

The expression on his face made her release him.

“You pushed a three-year-old child.”

“She fell.”

“I saw enough.”

“You walked in afterward.”

Rosa rose carefully.

“I saw what happened.”

Victoria laughed once.

It was short and bitter.

“Of course you did.”

Ethan’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“Not another word.”

Victoria stared at him.

He had never spoken to her that way.

“You’re choosing a maid’s accusation over your future wife?”

Ethan looked toward the engagement ring on Victoria’s hand.

Then he looked at the child in Rosa’s arms.

“No.”

Victoria’s shoulders relaxed for half a second.

Then Ethan continued.

“I’m choosing a frightened child over a woman who thinks her last name makes cruelty acceptable.”

The room went silent.

Ethan took out his phone.

“Daniel.”

His head of security answered immediately.

“I need the east parlor security footage preserved.”

Victoria went pale.

“There are cameras in here?”

“There are cameras in every room containing Caldwell family assets.”

Her gaze shifted toward the piano.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in her eyes.

Rosa noticed it.

So did Ethan.

Within fifteen minutes, Lily was being taken to a private pediatric hospital.

The doctors found no fracture.

No internal bleeding.

A mild concussion was possible, and they wanted to observe her overnight.

Ethan stayed.

Victoria called eleven times.

He ignored every call.

Near midnight, Lily finally fell asleep with Button tucked beneath her chin.

Rosa sat beside the hospital bed.

Ethan stood near the window.

Neither knew where to begin.

Finally, Rosa whispered.

“You disappeared.”

Ethan turned.

“I know.”

“No explanation.”

His jaw tightened.

“I sent you one.”

Rosa stared at him.

“No, you didn’t.”

“I wrote to you from London.”

“I never received anything.”

Ethan took one slow step toward her.

“I called you almost every night for two weeks.”

Rosa shook her head.

“My phone never rang.”

He looked stunned.

Then something colder entered his expression.

“Rosa, I went back to your apartment.”

Her breath caught.

“What?”

“Your landlord said you moved.”

“I never moved.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

And suddenly the mystery between them became something larger than abandonment.

Someone had lied to Ethan.

Someone had made sure Rosa believed she had been forgotten.

And four years later, that same lie had somehow led them back to the Caldwell estate.

Ethan looked through the glass at his sleeping daughter.

Then he said the words that changed everything again.

“I don’t think our separation was an accident.”
