Chapter 16 - WHAT SURVIVED THE FIRE
The mansion’s suppression system activated within seconds.
Water poured from the ceiling.
Daniel’s team contained the fire before it spread.
The piano was badly damaged.
The polished black wood had blistered.
One leg had cracked.
Several keys were destroyed.
Ethan stood in the water staring at it.
His mother’s piano.
The last object in the house that still felt like her.
Lily appeared behind Rosa.
Her face crumpled.
“My piano.”
Ethan turned.
Rosa knelt quickly.
“It can be fixed.”
“Promise?”
Rosa looked toward Ethan.
He nodded.
“Promise.”
Investigators found no forced entry.
Whoever started the fire had authorized access.
Daniel narrowed the possibilities to twenty-three people.
Then Lily said something.
“I saw shoes.”
Everyone turned.
“What shoes?” Rosa asked.
“The shiny ones.”
“When?”
“Before boom.”
Ethan crouched.
“Did you see the person?”
Lily shook her head.
“Only shoes.”
She pointed toward the hallway.
“They went there.”
The hallway ended at Ethan’s mother’s old library.
Daniel searched it.
Nothing seemed disturbed.
Then he noticed one shelf sitting slightly forward.
Behind it was a narrow service door.
The original mansion had passages once used by staff.
Most had been sealed during renovations.
This one had not.
The passage led directly to the garden.
At the exit, Daniel found one object.
A silver cuff link.
E.C.
Edward Caldwell.
Ethan closed his fist around it.
Samuel warned him.
“It could be planted.”
Ethan knew.
Someone wanted Edward blamed.
That meant either Edward had become reckless.
Or someone was cleaning the board of every remaining player.
The piano restorer arrived the next morning.
While removing the damaged soundboard, he called Ethan over.
“There’s something inside.”
Wedged beneath the frame was a narrow metal cylinder.
Fireproof.
Ethan opened it.
Inside were microfilm copies of trust records.
Original signatures.
Bank records.
And one notarized statement from Eleanor Caldwell.
The final paragraph named Hugh Haynes.
It accused him of helping Edward conceal illegal proxy transfers.
But the next sentence shocked everyone.
Edward Caldwell attempted to correct the scheme after learning what Haynes intended.
Ethan reread the sentence.
Edward had participated.
Then tried to stop it.
That explained his warning.
Victoria was not the person Ethan should fear.
Her father was.
The final document contained something even more dangerous.
Hugh Haynes had arranged the private flight Ethan was ordered onto four years earlier.
The “business emergency” that took Ethan away from Rosa had been engineered.
A fake acquisition crisis.
A manufactured legal threat.
Everything had been designed to remove Ethan from New York at one precise moment.
The week Rosa discovered she was pregnant.
Ethan looked at Samuel.
“Hugh knew before Rosa did.”
Samuel nodded slowly.
“Which means someone was monitoring her medical records.”
Rosa felt physically sick.
Then Daniel rushed into the room.
“Hugh Haynes just boarded a private plane.”
Ethan looked up.
“Where is he going?”
Daniel checked the flight plan.
“There isn’t one.”
