Chapter 11 - THE MAN IN VERMONT

Marcus Vale lived in a small cabin outside Burlington.

When Ethan arrived, the former consultant was already packing.

Daniel blocked the back door.

Marcus froze.

“I don’t want trouble.”

Ethan entered.

“You should have thought about that four years ago.”

Marcus looked older than his photographs.

Thin.

Nervous.

Afraid.

Not of Ethan.

Of someone else.

“I was paid to redirect communications.”

Rosa’s fingers tightened.

“My communications?”

Marcus nodded.

“Calls.”

“Emails.”

“Messages to Caldwell offices.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Who paid you?”

“Edward Caldwell authorized the first payment.”

Rosa closed her eyes.

The truth hurt even when she had expected it.

Marcus continued.

“But Edward wasn’t the one giving daily instructions.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Who was?”

“Hugh Haynes.”

Victoria’s father.

Marcus opened a locked drawer.

Inside were old flash drives.

Paper records.

Screenshots.

“I kept everything because I knew someday they might blame me.”

Ethan inserted one drive into Daniel’s laptop.

Emails appeared.

Track Martinez.

Block direct access to E.C.

Redirect reception inquiries.

Prevent face-to-face contact.

Then came the message that made Ethan stop breathing.

SUBJECT: PREGNANCY CONFIRMED.

Rosa looked away.

Marcus swallowed.

“That changed everything.”

Ethan scrolled.

One reply came from Hugh Haynes.

DOES EDWARD KNOW?

Another followed.

YES.

Then another.

THE CHILD CANNOT BECOME A CALDWELL BEFORE THE TRUST IS RESTRUCTURED.

Rosa covered her mouth.

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

“You knew they were stealing years from us.”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I told myself it was business.”

“My daughter was not business.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“You don’t.”

Daniel moved between them before anger became something worse.

Marcus hurried toward another file.

“There is something you don’t understand.”

He opened a photograph.

Victoria stood outside Marcus’s cabin.

The timestamp was only five months old.

Ethan stared.

“She came here?”

“Twice.”

“Why?”

“She wanted everything I had about Rosa.”

Rosa’s heart sank.

“Did you give it to her?”

“No.”

Marcus looked toward Ethan.

“That’s why she started threatening me.”

“So Victoria knew before the wedding.”

Marcus nodded.

“She knew Lily might be yours.”

The room fell silent.

The shove in the east parlor suddenly looked different.

Victoria had claimed she thought Lily was merely a maid’s child.

But she had visited Marcus months earlier.

She had already investigated Rosa.

She had already known there might be a daughter.

And still she had put her hands on Lily.

Ethan’s phone rang.

Samuel.

His voice was urgent.

“Ethan, get back to New York.”

“What happened?”

“The Haynes attorneys just filed an emergency challenge to Lily’s trust rights.”

“On what grounds?”

Samuel hesitated.

“They’re claiming the DNA test was obtained fraudulently.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“It is.”

“But they submitted a second DNA report.”

Ethan went still.

“What does it say?”

Samuel answered quietly.

May you like

“It says Lily isn’t yours.”
