Chapter 13 - THE GRAVE WITHOUT A BODY

The headstone read:

CATHERINE VALE.

1971–2009.

Beloved Mother.

There was no mention of a husband.

No mention of a child.

Ethan stood in the cold rain.

Marcus had refused to come.

But he had given them one name.

Noah.

Catherine’s son.

Ethan’s possible half brother.

Rosa found flowers beside the grave.

Fresh flowers.

Someone had visited recently.

Daniel inspected the card.

No name.

Only one sentence.

I PROMISED I WOULD PROTECT YOU.

Ethan looked at the handwriting.

He recognized it.

Edward.

They found Noah Vale that afternoon.

He ran a small architectural firm in Boston.

Thirty-one years old.

Dark hair.

Gray-green eyes.

The resemblance to Ethan was impossible to ignore.

Noah laughed when Ethan told him why they were there.

“My father died before I was born.”

“That’s what you were told?”

“That’s what my mother told everyone.”

Ethan showed him the payment records.

Noah’s expression changed.

Then Ethan showed him a photograph of his father, William Caldwell.

Noah stopped breathing.

Inside Noah’s desk was the same photograph.

Older.

Creased.

Hidden beneath tax documents.

“My mother gave me this before she died.”

Ethan stared.

“You knew.”

“No.”

Noah looked angry now.

“She said he helped us.”

“That’s all.”

“She never said he was my father.”

A DNA test later confirmed it.

William Caldwell had two sons.

Ethan.

And Noah.

Which meant the fraudulent DNA sample had likely come from Noah.

But Noah denied ever giving it.

Daniel asked a simple question.

“Have you had any medical tests recently?”

Noah thought.

“A company insurance physical.”

“When?”

“Six weeks ago.”

“Who arranged it?”

Noah checked his email.

The insurance broker belonged to a Haynes subsidiary.

The scheme was astonishingly careful.

They had collected Noah’s DNA before Lily ever fell.

Before the wedding was canceled.

Before Ethan learned the truth.

Rosa stared toward Noah.

“They were preparing for this.”

Months in advance.

Victoria had not simply reacted to Lily’s existence.

The Haynes family had anticipated it.

That evening, Noah handed Ethan a sealed envelope.

“My mother told me to give this to a Caldwell if one ever came asking.”

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Eleanor Caldwell and Catherine Vale together.

Not enemies.

Friends.

On the back, Eleanor had written:

Catherine knows where the original trust ledger is.

If Edward finds out, neither of our sons will be safe.

Ethan looked at Noah.

Neither of our sons.

Eleanor had known about him.

And if she considered Noah part of the danger, then the trust conspiracy had started decades earlier.

Before Rosa.

Before Lily.

Before Victoria.

Ethan finally understood.

His daughter had not created the battle.

May you like

She had inherited it.
