Chapter 9 - THE FALSE REPORT

Rosa did not leave.
Not because she felt brave.
Because she was tired of running from people whose faces she could not see.
Ethan doubled security.
Every entrance was monitored.
Every employee was checked.
Lily slept beside Rosa that night.
At six thirty the next morning, the gates opened for a black government vehicle.
Two child welfare investigators stepped out.
Rosa’s stomach dropped.
“We received an emergency complaint involving Lily Martinez.”
Ethan’s attorney appeared within minutes.
“What complaint?”
The investigator remained professional.
“Allegations of neglect.”
Rosa looked stunned.
“Neglect?”
“Specifically that Lily was routinely brought into an unsafe workplace and left unsupervised.”
Victoria’s name did not need to be spoken.
The allegation was clever.
It used one true fact.
Rosa had brought Lily to work.
Then twisted it into something ugly.
The investigator asked to speak with Rosa privately.
Ethan wanted to object.
Rosa stopped him.
“No.”
She looked at the investigator.
“I’ll answer anything.”
For the next hour, she did.
Childcare records.
Medical records.
Preschool enrollment.
Rental history.
Emergency contacts.
The refrigerator was checked.
Lily’s room was examined.
Finally, the woman smiled gently.
“This appears to be a stable environment.”
Rosa exhaled.
Then the investigator added.
“But there’s another allegation.”
Rosa’s relief vanished.
“What?”
“That you intentionally concealed Lily’s paternity for financial leverage.”
“That isn’t a child welfare issue.”
Samuel’s voice sharpened.
“No.”
The investigator nodded.
“But the anonymous caller included a recording.”
She played it.
Rosa’s voice filled the room.
Someday Ethan will pay for leaving us.
Rosa went white.
“I never said that.”
Ethan listened again.
The voice sounded exactly like her.
But something was wrong.
Lily walked into the room.
“That’s not Mama.”
Everyone turned.
The investigator crouched.
“What makes you say that?”
Lily pointed toward the phone.
“Mama says ‘Ethan’ different.”
Rosa stared at her daughter.
Ethan replayed the recording.
Then he understood.
Rosa had always pronounced his name softly.
Almost with a slight Spanish rhythm from growing up around her grandmother.
The recording was perfect.
Too perfect.
Artificial.
Samuel sent it to a forensic audio specialist.
Two hours later, the answer came.
The recording had been synthesized from multiple clips.
Someone had created Rosa’s voice.
Ethan immediately ordered an investigation into every interview, voicemail, and staff recording that could have been used.
The child welfare complaint was dismissed.
But the attempted attack told Ethan something important.
Their enemy was becoming desperate.
That evening, Daniel entered carrying another discovery.
“The security footage from the day Lily fell.”
Ethan looked up.
“We preserved it.”
“Yes.”
Daniel placed the tablet down.
“But someone tried to delete it remotely twenty minutes after Victoria left the estate.”
“Who?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
May you like
“The login belonged to Edward Caldwell.”
