Chapter 8 - BOX 417

The bank opened at nine.

Ethan was waiting at eight fifty-eight.

Samuel Price accompanied him.

So did Rosa.

The key from Eleanor’s piano opened a private deposit box registered under an old Caldwell family trust.

Inside were no diamonds.

No cash.

No priceless heirlooms.

Only documents.

Letters.

Photographs.

And one sealed envelope bearing Ethan’s name.

His hands trembled slightly as he opened it.

Ethan,

If you are reading this, I was right to be afraid.

Your uncle Edward believes control is the same thing as loyalty.

It is not.

Never confuse the two.

Ethan stopped.

Samuel quietly asked.

“Do you want a minute?”

“No.”

He continued.

There were records of unauthorized proxy transfers.

Payments to private investigators.

Payments to a communications consultant named Marcus Vale.

And one familiar company.

Haynes Strategic Advisory.

Rosa leaned closer.

“Hugh Haynes.”

Ethan nodded.

Four years earlier, the Haynes family had already been connected to the Caldwells.

Long before Ethan met Victoria socially.

Long before their engagement.

Samuel examined the transaction dates.

“This one is interesting.”

He showed Ethan a payment.

The transfer had been made three days after Ethan left New York during the business crisis.

Another followed one week later.

Then another.

The recipient was Marcus Vale.

Rosa whispered.

“That’s when my calls stopped going through.”

Ethan looked sick.

There were also photographs.

One showed Rosa outside Ethan’s apartment building.

Another showed her entering a prenatal clinic.

Another showed her standing outside Caldwell Holdings while pregnant.

Someone had watched her.

For months.

Rosa sat down.

“They knew.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Someone knew about Lily before she was born.”

At the bottom of the box was another envelope.

This one was addressed to Edward Caldwell.

It had never been mailed.

Ethan opened it.

Edward,

I know what you changed in the trust.

I know what you have been doing with Ethan’s communications.

If you interfere in his private life again, I will remove you entirely.

Eleanor.

Ethan closed his eyes.

His mother had discovered something before her death.

But not enough to stop it.

Samuel sorted through the files.

“There’s still no proof Edward intercepted Rosa’s messages.”

“No.”

Rosa picked up one ledger.

“But there might be someone who can give us proof.”

A name appeared beside several payments.

Marcus Vale.

Daniel called minutes later.

He had found him.

Marcus had disappeared from corporate consulting four years ago.

No social media.

No business registration.

No listed residence in New York.

But Daniel had found one recent transaction.

A medical payment made from an account in Vermont.

Ethan stood.

“We’re going.”

Samuel caught his arm.

“Before you do, there’s something else.”

He held up the trust amendment.

“Edward loses his voting power at midnight tomorrow.”

Ethan stared.

Samuel continued.

“Once Lily’s paternity filing is entered.”

Rosa understood instantly.

“If Edward knows…”

“He’ll have less than thirty-six hours to stop it.”

At that exact moment, Rosa’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

“Hello?”

A man breathed on the other end.

Then whispered.

“Take your daughter and leave the Caldwell house tonight.”

May you like

The line went dead.
