Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN THEY CALLED A GOLD DIGGER

By the next morning, Rosa’s photograph was everywhere.

FORMER LOVER RETURNS WITH BILLIONAIRE’S SECRET CHILD.

MAID CLAIMS CALDWELL HEIRESS STATUS.

WEDDING DESTROYED DAYS BEFORE CEREMONY.

Someone had leaked the story.

Not the truth.

A version of it.

A crueler version.

Rosa was described as calculating.

Ambitious.

Manipulative.

Victoria became the humiliated bride.

Lily became evidence.

Ethan became the foolish billionaire trapped by an old lover.

Reporters waited outside Rosa’s apartment.

One shouted when she arrived.

“How much money are you asking Ethan Caldwell for?”

Another pushed a microphone closer.

“Did you intentionally hide his daughter?”

Rosa tightened her grip around Lily.

“I want to go home, Mama.”

Ethan’s security team moved around them.

But the damage had already been done.

That night, Rosa packed a suitcase.

Ethan found her in the guest wing.

“You’re leaving?”

“I can’t keep her here.”

“This is the safest place in New York.”

“No, Ethan.”

Rosa zipped Lily’s jacket into the suitcase.

“It’s the center of the storm.”

“I can protect you.”

Rosa stopped.

“That sentence is exactly the problem.”

Ethan frowned.

“You think money fixes everything.”

“I don’t.”

“You think security can stand outside a door and suddenly Lily doesn’t hear strangers calling her mother a liar.”

His face tightened.

Rosa lowered her voice.

“I spent three years building a normal life for her.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She looked at him.

“You found out you had a daughter three days ago.”

“I woke up every morning knowing I had one.”

The words struck harder than Ethan expected.

Rosa immediately regretted them.

But she did not take them back.

Ethan nodded slowly.

“You’re right.”

She had expected an argument.

Instead, he lifted the suitcase.

“I’ll drive you.”

Rosa stared at him.

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

Before they could leave, Daniel entered.

“There’s a problem.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

Daniel handed him a tablet.

A security image filled the screen.

Someone had entered Rosa’s apartment while she was at the hospital.

Nothing expensive had been taken.

No jewelry.

No cash.

No electronics.

Only one drawer had been opened.

Rosa went pale.

“My journals.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What journals?”

“My pregnancy journals.”

She swallowed.

“I wrote everything down.”

“Everything?”

“Every appointment.”

“Every attempt I made to contact you.”

Ethan’s expression changed instantly.

Rosa continued.

“And copies of the letters I sent.”

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

“Whoever broke in knew exactly what they wanted.”

A knock sounded at the mansion’s front doors.

Another security officer entered carrying a plain white envelope.

“No return address.”

Inside was one photograph.

Rosa standing outside Ethan’s Manhattan office four years earlier.

Pregnant.

Alone.

Someone had written six words across the bottom.

May you like

SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN.
