Chapter 17 - THE COUNTERATTACK

Ethan could have chased the plane.
Instead, he attacked the one thing Hugh Haynes valued more than freedom.
His empire.
By noon, Caldwell Holdings suspended every Haynes partnership.
By one thirty, Samuel filed evidence with federal investigators.
By two, three banks froze transactions linked to the trust scheme.
By four, Hugh’s corporate board demanded an emergency meeting.
His private plane landed in Westchester before sunset.
He had nowhere useful to run.
Edward Caldwell arrived at Ethan’s estate that night without a lawyer.
Daniel searched him before allowing him inside.
Edward accepted the humiliation silently.
Ethan waited beside the ruined piano.
“You tried to stop Hugh.”
“Eventually.”
“That doesn’t make you innocent.”
“I know.”
“Why did you help him?”
Edward looked around the parlor.
“Because I believed the Caldwell company mattered more than the people carrying the name.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“That sounds familiar.”
“I taught you badly.”
“Yes.”
Edward looked toward Lily’s toys beside the sofa.
“I did not know Rosa was pregnant when the surveillance began.”
“But you knew later.”
“Yes.”
“And did nothing.”
“Yes.”
The honesty made Ethan angrier.
“Why?”
“Because your mother’s trust gave a future child enough voting power to break the structure I had spent decades building.”
“So you stole my daughter’s first three years.”
Edward lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Rosa stepped into the room.
“Did you order anyone to hurt Lily?”
“No.”
“Did Hugh?”
Edward hesitated.
“Not when I was involved.”
“That isn’t what she asked.”
Edward looked toward Ethan.
“Hugh believed problems should be removed before they became public.”
Rosa went pale.
Edward continued.
“When Victoria discovered Lily existed, she confronted him.”
“She wanted the child eliminated from the trust.”
Ethan’s voice sharpened.
“How?”
“Legally at first.”
“And later?”
“I don’t know.”
Rosa did not believe him.
Then Edward removed an old phone from his coat.
“This belonged to Hugh.”
Ethan stared.
“How do you have it?”
“He left it in my car after a meeting.”
“I kept it because I stopped trusting him.”
The phone contained deleted voice messages.
Daniel restored one.
Victoria’s voice filled the room.
I don’t care how you handle the girl.
I am not walking into that wedding with a three-year-old heir sitting between me and everything we planned.
Rosa stopped breathing.
Another voice answered.
Hugh.
Do nothing.
I mean it, Victoria.
No accidents.
No scenes.
The recording ended.
Ethan looked toward Edward.
“So Hugh told her not to hurt Lily.”
“Yes.”
“Then who burned the piano?”
Edward shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Suddenly Daniel’s radio crackled.
A guard spoke urgently.
“Movement at the south gate.”
Then another voice.
“Vehicle breached the perimeter.”
Ethan reached for Rosa.
Headlights appeared through the east parlor windows.
A black SUV raced up the driveway.
It stopped at the front steps.
The door opened.
Victoria stepped out alone.
May you like
And in her hand was a gasoline can.
