Chapter 12

CHAPTER 12

The Man Behind the Raven

The massive steel vault door slowly swung inward.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Victor Ashcombe entered alone.

He carried no rifle.

No pistol.

Only a polished black cane with a silver raven carved into its handle.

Behind him, dozens of armed men remained outside the vault.

They never crossed the threshold.

Victor removed his leather gloves and looked around the room.

His eyes settled on Khloe.

"So..."

"Jonathan's daughter survived."

Khloe stepped forward before anyone could stop her.

"You took my baby."

Victor's expression remained calm.

"No."

"I protected your child."

Khloe's voice rose.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"My daughter doesn't need protecting."

"She needs her mother."

Victor nodded once.

"That is why she is still alive."

Harrison raised his pistol.

"Don't move."

Victor barely glanced at the weapon.

"If you intended to shoot me..."

"...you would have done it already."

Harrison tightened his grip.

"You don't know me."

Victor looked directly into his eyes.

"I knew your father."

"I watched you learn to ride a bicycle."

"I attended your eighth birthday."

Harrison's face went pale.

"Impossible."

Victor smiled sadly.

"You simply never knew my name."

Gabriel Blackwood slowly stepped forward.

"I warned you never to return."

Victor answered quietly.

"You also promised never to involve Jonathan's children."

"Yet here we are."

The two elderly men stared at each other.

Old friends.

Older enemies.

Neither looked away.

Naomi finally broke the silence.

"Enough."

"Someone explain what's happening."

Victor looked toward her.

"Very well."

He rested both hands on his cane.

"Thirty years ago..."

"Harrington Commercial wasn't merely a corporation."

"It served as the financial vault for several of the wealthiest families in America."

"The ledger Jonathan discovered..."

"...didn't contain stolen money."

"It contained every family's secrets."

Political donations.

Hidden trusts.

Foreign intelligence payments.

Corporate espionage.

Names powerful enough to destroy governments.

Naomi slowly lowered Jonathan's journal.

"So that's why everyone wanted it."

Victor nodded.

"It was never about money."

"It was always about information."

Khloe looked at Gabriel.

"My father wanted to expose all of it."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

"Yes."

"He believed the truth belonged to the public."

Victor sighed.

"And that belief signed his death warrant."

Richard suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned toward him.

"So after twenty-three years..."

"...we finally admit the truth."

He looked at Khloe.

"None of us killed Jonathan."

Khloe stared at him.

"What?"

Richard pointed his finger at Victor.

"He did."

The room became deathly quiet.

Victor didn't deny it.

Instead...

He removed his glasses.

"I was the last person to see your father alive."

Khloe felt as though the air had vanished from the room.

"You murdered him."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"I tried to save him."

He reached into his coat.

Slowly.

Carefully.

This time he removed a faded cassette tape.

Across the label, written in Jonathan Cole's handwriting, were four words.

Meeting With Victor.

Victor placed it gently on the table.

"This recording begins thirty-two minutes before Jonathan died."

Naomi inserted it into the old cassette recorder.

A burst of static filled the room.

Then...

Jonathan's voice.

Calm.

Clear.

"If you're listening to this..."

"...Victor finally agreed to meet."

Another voice answered.

Victor's.

"You have to destroy the ledger."

Jonathan replied immediately.

"I won't."

"They'll kill you."

"Then they'll have to."

Several seconds of silence followed.

Victor spoke again.

"I can get Khloe out."

"I can hide your family."

Jonathan answered with heartbreaking certainty.

"If I run..."

"...they'll never stop hunting my daughter."

Victor whispered,

"I'm out of time."

The recording ended with a loud crash.

Then...

Gunshots.

Three of them.

The tape abruptly stopped.

No one spoke.

Khloe couldn't breathe.

Victor slowly looked into her eyes.

"When I reached the warehouse..."

"...Jonathan was already dying."

"He made me promise one thing."

Victor's voice cracked.

"Protect his daughter."

Gabriel lowered his head.

"He kept that promise."

Victor nodded.

"For twenty-three years."

Khloe's anger battled with overwhelming confusion.

"If you protected me..."

"Why steal Hope?"

Victor answered without hesitation.

"Because someone else finally found Jonathan's last secret."

Naomi frowned.

"What secret?"

Victor looked toward the ceiling.

"The final trust wasn't activated by Hope's birth."

"It was activated..."

"...the moment someone tried to kidnap her."

Silence.

Then every phone in the room vibrated simultaneously.

A legal notification appeared on every screen.

COLE FAMILY TRUST ACTIVATED

PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: HOPE ELIZABETH COLE

EMERGENCY SUCCESSION PROTOCOL COMPLETE

Below the message appeared a second notification.

TOTAL ASSETS RELEASED

$18,427,000,000

Khloe stared at the impossible number.

Richard stared.

Gabriel stared.

Even Victor looked shocked.

Jonathan hadn't left behind millions.

He had hidden nearly twenty billion dollars.

Before anyone recovered from the shock...

The vault lights suddenly turned blood red.

A computerized voice echoed throughout the underground archive.

Unauthorized biometric access detected.

Final vault opening.

The concrete floor beneath Jonathan's old desk began to split apart.

From the darkness below...

A hidden elevator slowly rose into view.

Someone was already inside it.

May you like

Waiting.

For Khloe.
