CHAPTER 2 The House of Lies

CHAPTER 2

The House of Lies

The click of the deadbolt echoed through the grand foyer.

For a brief second, Khloe froze.

Not because she believed Richard intended to hurt her—not yet.

Because she finally understood something Harrison had already suspected.

Richard wasn't preparing for a divorce anymore.

He was preparing for a war.

She slowly removed her coat and handed it to the housekeeper, Margaret, who couldn't meet her eyes.

Something was wrong.

The staff, who had worked for the Harrington family for years, suddenly looked terrified.

No one smiled.

No one welcomed her home.

No one asked how she or the baby were doing.

They simply disappeared into different rooms as if afraid of being seen near her.

Richard loosened his tie.

"We'll have dinner first."

Khloe nodded.

"As you wish."

He frowned.

Normally she would have argued.

She would have demanded to know why Vanessa was standing inside her home.

Instead, she walked calmly toward the dining room.

That unsettled him.

Vanessa followed beside Richard, her expensive heels clicking confidently against the marble floor.

She looked around like someone inspecting a house she already owned.

"I've always loved this dining room," Vanessa said.

"The natural lighting is incredible."

Khloe looked at the woman without expression.

"It should be."

Vanessa smiled.

"I designed it."

Khloe's lips curved into the slightest smile.

"No."

Vanessa blinked.

"What?"

"I designed it."

Silence.

Richard looked between them.

Khloe calmly pulled out a chair.

"The original architectural plans were mine. Every ceiling height, every window angle, every stone selection."

She gently rested a hand over her stomach.

"You redecorated it."

Vanessa's smile stiffened.

Richard interrupted.

"This isn't the time."

Khloe simply sat down.

"No," she agreed.

"It isn't."

Dinner felt like a business negotiation disguised as a family meal.

Crystal glasses.

Silver cutlery.

Perfectly cooked filet mignon.

No one tasted anything.

Richard finally broke the silence.

"I've been thinking."

Khloe almost laughed.

Only now?

"I believe you need less stress."

She looked up.

"I agree."

"I've arranged for Dr. Sullivan to evaluate you."

"My obstetrician is Dr. Adler."

"I know."

Richard cut another piece of steak.

"But Dr. Sullivan specializes in high-risk psychiatric pregnancies."

Khloe's heartbeat slowed.

Not from fear.

From clarity.

Psychiatric.

He wasn't trying to help her.

He was building a record.

Vanessa reached for her wine.

"I've heard pregnancy hormones can become..."

She hesitated deliberately.

"...dangerous."

Khloe looked directly at her.

"Really?"

Vanessa nodded.

"My cousin became completely irrational."

Khloe smiled.

"I've heard affairs can have similar side effects."

Richard slammed his fork onto the table.

"Enough."

Khloe looked at him calmly.

"I only answered her observation."

For several long seconds no one spoke.

Then Richard folded his napkin.

"I've also spoken with family counsel."

Khloe already knew.

Still she asked.

"About what?"

"In the unlikely event something happens during delivery..."

He paused.

"I believe temporary guardianship paperwork is appropriate."

Khloe almost admired the performance.

He made it sound responsible.

Protective.

Reasonable.

She knew the truth.

He wanted control before the baby was even born.

She slowly took a sip of water.

"I'll have Harrison review everything."

Richard's expression changed.

"No."

"No?"

"This concerns our family."

"My brother is my family."

Silence.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"I think I'll let you two talk."

She walked upstairs.

Khloe watched her disappear.

Halfway up the staircase Vanessa casually touched the polished oak banister.

Almost affectionately.

Like someone imagining herself living there.

At 10:47 p.m., Richard finally went into his office.

Khloe quietly entered the guest bedroom instead of the master suite.

Exactly as Harrison instructed.

She locked the door.

Then she immediately texted Naomi.

He introduced psychiatric evaluation. Emergency guardianship. Vanessa staying inside house.

The reply arrived less than twenty seconds later.

Document everything. Don't sign anything. Security team outside.

Khloe exhaled.

She wasn't alone.

For the first time all day...

She felt safe.

Or almost safe.

At midnight she couldn't sleep.

The baby kicked constantly.

Stress.

She knew the signs.

She quietly walked downstairs toward the kitchen for water.

The mansion was silent.

Until...

Voices.

Richard's office.

The door wasn't fully closed.

She recognized Vanessa's voice first.

"...she didn't react."

Richard answered quietly.

"Neither did I."

"This isn't normal."

"I know."

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Do you think she knows?"

Khloe stopped breathing.

Richard answered after several seconds.

"No."

"If she knew, she'd already be screaming."

Vanessa laughed softly.

"Maybe she's finally accepted reality."

Khloe carefully reached into her pocket.

Her phone.

No recording.

Pennsylvania law.

Harrison's warning echoed inside her head.

She resisted every instinct.

She simply listened.

Richard sighed.

"We only need another week."

Another week?

Vanessa whispered,

"And the guardianship?"

"The petition will be filed Monday."

"What about the money?"

"The last transfer goes through tomorrow."

"And Harrison?"

Richard became quiet.

Finally he answered.

"Harrison only knows what Khloe tells him."

Vanessa laughed again.

"Good."

Neither of them noticed the shadow standing outside the office.

Khloe silently walked away.

Every word had burned itself into her memory.

The next morning, the Harrington estate transformed into chaos.

Phones rang continuously.

Executives rushed inside.

Board members arrived unexpectedly.

Richard left before breakfast without explaining anything.

Vanessa remained.

She wandered through the house wearing one of Richard's cashmere sweaters.

Khloe noticed immediately.

It wasn't just any sweater.

She had bought it for Richard on their fifth anniversary in Florence.

Vanessa smiled when she caught Khloe looking.

"It's comfortable."

Khloe simply nodded.

"I'm sure it is."

Vanessa leaned against the kitchen island.

"You know..."

"What?"

"I almost feel sorry for you."

Khloe slowly stirred her tea.

"Why?"

"You still think this marriage can be saved."

Khloe looked at her for several seconds.

Then quietly answered,

"No."

Vanessa blinked.

"I don't."

That answer caught her completely off guard.

Khloe continued.

"I'm just curious."

"About what?"

"How long you've believed stolen things actually belong to you."

Vanessa laughed.

"I didn't steal Richard."

Khloe smiled politely.

"No."

"You lost him."

Vanessa expected tears.

She expected shouting.

Instead Khloe calmly walked away carrying her tea upstairs.

For the first time...

Vanessa looked uncertain.

At noon Harrison called.

"Are you alone?"

"Yes."

"Good."

His voice sounded unusually serious.

"We confirmed the forged signature."

Khloe closed her eyes.

"So it's real."

"It gets worse."

"What?"

"The consulting agreement transferring nearly five million dollars..."

He paused.

"...was notarized."

Khloe frowned.

"But I wasn't there."

"No."

Harrison's voice became dangerously calm.

"According to the documents..."

"...you were."

Silence.

"They created an entire legal record placing you inside a Philadelphia office three weeks ago."

"I was hospitalized for pregnancy monitoring that day."

"I know."

Another pause.

"Hospital records prove you never left."

Khloe's stomach tightened.

"They forged everything."

"Not everything."

"What do you mean?"

Harrison slowly answered.

"They also bribed someone."

Khloe felt ice spread through her chest.

"Who?"

"The notary."

"And if the notary lies?"

"He won't."

"How can you be sure?"

For the first time...

Harrison sounded almost satisfied.

"Because twenty minutes ago..."

"...the FBI arrested him on unrelated federal fraud charges."

Khloe's eyes widened.

"What?"

"And people facing twenty years in federal prison..."

"...suddenly become very interested in telling the truth."

For the first time since discovering Richard's betrayal...

Hope returned.

Small.

Fragile.

But real.

She looked out the bedroom window.

Across the street sat an ordinary black SUV.

To anyone else it looked parked.

To Khloe...

It looked like protection.

She gently rested both hands over her belly.

"We're going to survive this."

The baby kicked once.

As if answering her.

Neither Khloe nor Harrison realized...

Someone else had been listening.

Just outside the slightly open bedroom door...

Vanessa Kensington quietly lowered her phone.

The call had remained connected the entire time.

May you like

And Richard had heard every single word.
