CHAPTER 3 The First Counterattack

CHAPTER 3
The First Counterattack
Vanessa remained outside Khloe’s bedroom for three full seconds after the call ended.
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
Through the narrow opening in the door, she could see Khloe standing beside the window, both hands resting over her pregnant belly.
Khloe looked calm.
That frightened Vanessa more than tears ever could.
She stepped away silently and hurried down the hallway.
The moment she entered the guest suite, she locked the door and called Richard again.
He answered immediately.
“How much did you hear?” she whispered.
“All of it.”
His voice was low and controlled, but Vanessa knew him well enough to recognize the panic beneath it.
“The notary was arrested,” she said. “If he talks—”
“He won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I paid him enough.”
Vanessa paced across the room.
“Money doesn’t matter when federal agents start discussing prison.”
Richard said nothing.
That silence was worse than anger.
Vanessa stopped near the mirror.
“What do we do?”
“We move faster.”
“How?”
“The final transfer leaves tonight.”
“And Khloe?”
Another silence.
Then Richard said, “She can no longer remain credible.”
Vanessa stared at her own reflection.
“What exactly does that mean?”
“It means Dr. Sullivan comes today.”
“She won’t cooperate.”
“She doesn’t need to.”
Vanessa’s face slowly changed.
“You already arranged it.”
“Yes.”
“And the guardianship petition?”
“It will be filed before Harrison can block it.”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“What if he already knows everything?”
Richard answered with a calm that sounded rehearsed.
“Harrison thinks this is a divorce case.”
“It isn’t?”
“No.”
The line went quiet.
Vanessa waited.
Finally, Richard said, “Be downstairs at two.”
Then he ended the call.
Vanessa remained motionless.
For the first time since the affair began, she wondered whether Richard had told her the entire truth.
At 1:52 p.m., three vehicles entered the Harrington estate.
The first was a black Mercedes.
The second was a private medical transport van.
The third belonged to Montgomery County Family Services.
Khloe watched them arrive from the upstairs window.
Her blood ran cold.
She immediately called Harrison.
He answered on the first ring.
“Three vehicles just entered the driveway.”
“Describe them.”
Khloe did.
Harrison became silent.
Then his voice sharpened.
“Lock your bedroom door.”
She crossed the room and turned the lock.
“What is happening?”
“They’re creating an emergency.”
A knock sounded downstairs.
Several voices followed.
Khloe stepped away from the window.
“Harrison, what should I do?”
“Do not open the door for anyone except Naomi.”
Another knock struck her bedroom door.
“Mrs. Harrington?”
A man’s voice.
“My name is Dr. Stephen Sullivan. Your husband requested an immediate wellness evaluation.”
Khloe’s hand tightened around the phone.
“I did not request an evaluation.”
Richard spoke from the hallway.
“Khloe, open the door.”
She said nothing.
His voice softened.
It was the same voice he once used after her miscarriages.
The voice that had convinced her he was gentle.
“We’re worried about you.”
Khloe felt sick.
Harrison heard everything through the phone.
“Keep him talking,” he said.
Khloe moved closer to the door but did not unlock it.
“Why is Family Services here?”
A pause followed.
Richard answered, “Because you’re eight months pregnant and behaving irrationally.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
There it was.
The accusation.
Spoken clearly.
Witnessed by professionals.
Designed to become evidence.
“What irrational behavior?” she asked.
“You disappeared yesterday.”
“I visited my attorney.”
“You refused to sleep in our room.”
“My back hurts.”
“You accused Vanessa of stealing from you.”
Khloe nearly laughed.
Vanessa was wearing her husband’s sweater inside her home.
Yet Richard spoke as though Khloe were imagining everything.
Dr. Sullivan interrupted.
“Mrs. Harrington, I only need to ask a few questions. This does not need to become confrontational.”
“Then speak through the door.”
A woman’s voice followed.
“Mrs. Harrington, I’m Elaine Cooper with Family Services. We received a report expressing concern for the safety of your unborn child.”
Khloe’s heart pounded.
“What report?”
“I cannot disclose the reporter.”
She already knew.
Richard.
Or Vanessa.
Perhaps both.
Khloe looked toward the window.
The black SUV across the street had disappeared.
Where was Naomi?
Harrison spoke quietly through the phone.
“Khloe, listen carefully. Ask whether they have a court order.”
She repeated the question.
The hallway became silent.
Finally, Elaine answered.
“We have an emergency assessment authorization.”
“That is not a court order.”
Richard struck the door with his palm.
“Stop turning this into a legal performance!”
Khloe flinched.
The baby shifted sharply beneath her ribs.
She steadied herself against the dresser.
Harrison’s voice hardened.
“I heard that. Stay away from the door.”
Another vehicle entered the driveway.
Khloe looked outside.
A gray sedan stopped behind the medical van.
Naomi stepped out.
Beside her was a uniformed state police officer.
Khloe nearly collapsed with relief.
“They’re here,” she whispered.
“I know,” Harrison said. “I sent them.”
Downstairs, the front door opened.
Voices rose.
A minute later, Naomi’s voice came from the hallway.
“Everyone step away from Mrs. Harrington’s door.”
Richard answered angrily.
“This is my home.”
“And the woman behind that door is my client.”
Naomi was not an attorney, but she spoke with enough authority that no one questioned her.
The officer added, “Mr. Harrington, step back.”
Khloe unlocked the door.
Naomi stood outside, calm and composed.
Dr. Sullivan held a leather case.
Elaine Cooper clutched a folder.
Richard looked furious.
Vanessa stood at the far end of the hallway, watching.
Khloe opened the door only halfway.
Naomi turned to Elaine.
“Please show me the authorization.”
Elaine handed over the document.
Naomi read it.
Then she smiled.
Not warmly.
“This authorization is invalid.”
Richard’s face changed.
Elaine frowned.
“It was signed this morning.”
“By Judge Lawson,” Naomi said.
“Yes.”
“Judge Lawson recused himself from all Harrington matters fourteen months ago.”
Elaine looked down at the signature.
Naomi continued.
“His wife owns shares in two Harrington developments.”
Richard stepped forward.
“That has nothing to do with this.”
“It has everything to do with this.”
The officer took the paper.
“I’ll need to verify the order.”
Dr. Sullivan cleared his throat.
“I was told there was an immediate risk of self-harm and harm to the child.”
Khloe stared at Richard.
“You told him that?”
Richard did not answer.
Dr. Sullivan looked uncomfortable.
“Your husband reported that you threatened to end the pregnancy.”
The hallway went completely still.
Khloe’s face drained of color.
“I would never say that.”
Vanessa spoke softly from behind them.
“I heard her.”
Everyone turned.
Khloe looked at Vanessa in disbelief.
Vanessa lowered her gaze.
“She said the baby was the only thing keeping Richard tied to her.”
“That is a lie.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with carefully timed tears.
“She said if she couldn’t have him, no one would.”
Khloe moved forward.
Naomi immediately placed an arm in front of her.
“Do not react.”
Khloe stopped.
That was exactly what they wanted.
Vanessa wanted anger.
Dr. Sullivan wanted instability.
Richard wanted witnesses.
Khloe forced herself to breathe.
Then Naomi opened her briefcase.
“I anticipated this.”
She removed a hospital file and handed it to Dr. Sullivan.
“These are Mrs. Harrington’s complete prenatal records. They include multiple assessments from Dr. Adler confirming no psychiatric concerns, no harmful ideation, and consistent protective behavior toward her pregnancy.”
Dr. Sullivan reviewed the documents.
Richard’s voice rose.
“Those records are old.”
“The most recent assessment was yesterday,” Naomi said.
Khloe looked at her.
Yesterday?
Harrison had prepared everything before sending her home.
Dr. Sullivan continued reading.
His expression grew increasingly uncomfortable.
Finally, he closed the file.
“I do not believe an involuntary evaluation is justified based on the information currently available.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
Elaine Cooper slowly lowered her folder.
“Neither do I.”
Vanessa’s face went pale.
The officer turned toward Richard.
“Who made the original report?”
Elaine hesitated.
Then she answered.
“It was submitted by Mr. Harrington.”
Richard looked at her sharply.
“That information is confidential.”
“Not during an investigation into a potentially false emergency report,” Naomi said.
Khloe studied her husband.
He had lied to a doctor.
He had lied to Family Services.
He had used their unborn daughter as a weapon.
Something inside her finally broke.
Not her composure.
Her love.
The last fragile piece of it disappeared.
Naomi turned to Khloe.
“Pack what you need. You’re leaving.”
Richard blocked the hallway.
“She is not taking my child anywhere.”
The officer stepped between them.
“She is free to leave.”
“That baby is mine.”
Khloe stared at him.
For six years, she had known Richard as polished, strategic, and controlled.
Now the mask was slipping.
She saw something beneath it.
Ownership.
Not love.
“You never wanted her,” Khloe said.
Richard’s face hardened.
“You don’t know what I want.”
“No,” Khloe answered quietly. “I finally do.”
She entered the bedroom and packed one suitcase.
Naomi remained beside the door.
Within ten minutes, Khloe was walking down the staircase.
The same staircase where her wedding portrait had once stood.
The same staircase where Vanessa now watched from above.
Richard followed Khloe into the foyer.
“This is a mistake.”
Khloe stopped at the front door.
“No.”
She turned.
“Marrying you was the mistake.”
Richard moved closer.
His voice dropped low enough that only she could hear.
“You have no idea what Harrison is interfering with.”
Khloe held his gaze.
“Then tell me.”
For one second, fear flashed across Richard’s face.
Real fear.
Then it vanished.
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
Khloe stepped outside.
Naomi guided her toward the gray sedan.
Before Khloe reached the car, her phone vibrated.
A message from Harrison.
Do not go to my office. The notary was attacked during transport.
Khloe stopped walking.
Another message appeared.
He survived. Before losing consciousness, he gave agents one name.
Then a final message.
Your father.
Khloe stared at the screen.
Her father had been dead for twenty-three years.
Behind her, Richard stood in the doorway.
May you like
And for the first time that day—
He was smiling.
