CHAPTER 4 The Name That Should Have Stayed Buried

CHAPTER 4
The Name That Should Have Stayed Buried
Khloe stared at the message on her phone.
Jonathan Cole.
Her father's name.
The man who had died twenty-three years earlier.
The man whose funeral she still remembered through tears and blurred memories.
Her hands began to shake.
Naomi noticed immediately.
"What happened?"
Khloe handed her the phone without speaking.
Naomi read Harrison's message twice before looking back at her.
"This changes everything."
"It doesn't make any sense."
"No."
Naomi started the engine.
"But someone wants us to believe your father was involved."
The sedan sped away from the Harrington estate while two security vehicles quietly followed behind.
For the first time since leaving Richard, Khloe felt something worse than heartbreak.
Confusion.
Twenty minutes later, they entered an abandoned warehouse district outside Philadelphia.
Hidden behind an old brick factory stood a restored nineteenth-century building surrounded by private security.
Harrison was waiting outside.
The moment Khloe stepped from the car, she marched directly toward him.
"You lied to me."
He didn't deny it.
"You knew there was another investigation into Dad's death."
"I knew there were questions."
"You never told me."
"You were thirteen."
"I'm thirty-six now."
Harrison lowered his eyes.
"I should have."
Those four words carried more weight than any apology.
Khloe took a deep breath.
"Tell me everything."
Inside the secure building, Harrison placed an old cardboard file on the conference table.
Dust covered the edges.
The label read:
COLE, JONATHAN — PRIVATE INVESTIGATION
"I hired an investigator six months after Dad died," Harrison explained.
"He found inconsistencies."
Khloe slowly opened the file.
Photographs.
Police reports.
Insurance documents.
One page immediately caught her attention.
Brake line showed signs of deliberate damage.
Her heart skipped.
"It wasn't an accident."
"We could never prove it."
"Why not?"
"The investigator disappeared."
"What do you mean disappeared?"
"He vanished three weeks before delivering his final report."
Khloe looked up.
"No body?"
Harrison slowly shook his head.
"Nothing."
Naomi laid another folder beside the first.
"We found something yesterday."
Inside were copies of financial records dating back twenty-four years.
Company names.
Property transfers.
Construction contracts.
One signature appeared again and again.
Jonathan Cole.
Khloe frowned.
"That's not my father's signature."
Both Harrison and Naomi looked at her.
"How do you know?"
She pointed to the letter J.
"My father always looped the bottom of his J."
She smiled sadly.
"He taught me to write my name the same way."
She placed one genuine birthday card beside the copied contract.
The difference became obvious.
The signatures had been forged.
Someone had been using Jonathan Cole's identity for decades.
Harrison leaned back.
"The notary confirmed one thing before he disappeared."
"He said Jonathan Cole authorized the first offshore companies."
"But Dad was already dead."
"Exactly."
Silence filled the room.
Someone had built an empire using a dead man's name.
Naomi suddenly spoke.
"There was something else."
She projected an old photograph onto the screen.
It showed Jonathan Cole standing outside Harrington Commercial headquarters.
Beside him stood Charles Harrington.
Richard's father.
The founder of the company.
The two men looked... friendly.
Khloe couldn't believe her eyes.
"Our families knew each other."
Harrison nodded.
"Long before you met Richard."
Khloe stared at the photograph.
Then something caught her attention.
A young boy stood several feet behind Charles Harrington.
About twelve years old.
Dark hair.
Confident posture.
Richard.
"He knew my father."
"He absolutely did," Harrison answered.
"And he never told me."
Naomi enlarged the image.
Near Jonathan's briefcase was a small silver emblem shaped like a lighthouse.
"What is that?" Khloe asked.
"No idea," Harrison admitted.
Naomi searched several old business registries.
Seconds later a result appeared.
Lighthouse Holdings LLC
Status:
Dissolved
Owner:
Jonathan Cole
Date closed:
Twenty-three years earlier.
Exactly one week after Jonathan's funeral.
Khloe frowned.
"Who inherited the company?"
Naomi clicked another page.
The answer appeared.
All three of them froze.
Beneficiary: Khloe Elizabeth Cole.
Khloe slowly stood.
"That's impossible."
"You were the legal owner."
"I was thirteen."
"Which means someone controlled it until you became an adult."
Khloe looked toward Harrison.
His expression changed.
"I never knew."
"You weren't the trustee?"
"No."
"Then who was?"
Naomi continued scrolling.
The trustee's name appeared.
Everyone expected Charles Harrington.
Or Richard.
Or another executive.
Instead...
A different name appeared.
Margaret Kensington.
Vanessa Kensington's mother.
The room fell completely silent.
Khloe whispered,
"Vanessa didn't enter my life by accident."
Harrison's face darkened.
"No."
"She was sent."
Before anyone could speak again, Harrison's secure phone rang.
Only one person used that number.
He answered immediately.
"What happened?"
His expression hardened.
"When?"
Another long silence.
Finally he ended the call.
Naomi looked at him.
"The notary?"
Harrison nodded.
"He escaped federal custody."
Khloe frowned.
"Escaped?"
"No."
"He was taken."
"By whom?"
"We don't know."
"But before disappearing..."
Harrison looked directly at his sister.
"...he managed to leave investigators one message."
"What message?"
Harrison slowly placed a folded piece of paper on the table.
Khloe unfolded it.
Only six words had been written in hurried handwriting.
Trust no Harrington. Especially Richard.
Below those words...
One final sentence.
The ledger is beneath the lighthouse.
At that exact moment, every light inside the building went dark.
Emergency alarms began screaming.
Naomi drew her weapon.
Outside...
Several black SUVs surrounded the building.
Then a calm male voice echoed through loudspeakers.
"Mr. Cole..."
"We know your sister has found the truth."
A long pause followed.
Then came the words that chilled everyone inside.
May you like
"Hand over Khloe..."
"...or everyone in this building dies."
