CHAPTER 17 The Woman Everyone Buried

CHAPTER 17
The Woman Everyone Buried
The gunshot echoed through the nursery.
Victor Ashcombe collapsed to one knee.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
Khloe instinctively shielded Hope with her body.
Richard and Harrison drew their weapons toward the darkness.
The emergency lights flickered back on.
The room became perfectly still.
Victor was alive.
The bullet had passed through his left shoulder.
But something far more alarming had happened.
The microSD card was gone.
Naomi searched the floor frantically.
"It vanished."
Edward looked just as stunned.
"I didn't take it."
Richard stared at him.
"For the first time..."
"...I actually believe you."
The room fell silent.
If Edward hadn't stolen it...
Someone else had.
Someone hidden inside the nursery.
Gabriel slowly looked around the room.
"There are too many people."
Victor winced through the pain.
"No."
"There are too few."
Everyone looked at him.
"The shooter wasn't inside."
"He fired through the old servant's passage."
Richard's expression changed.
"The passage behind the fireplace."
He ran to the stone wall.
A narrow wooden panel stood slightly open.
Whoever had fired the shot was already gone.
Naomi found something lying on the floor.
A single brass shell casing.
Unlike modern ammunition, the casing carried a tiny engraved symbol.
A white lily.
Gabriel's breathing stopped.
"No..."
Victor looked at the casing.
Then closed his eyes.
"I never thought I'd see that again."
Khloe frowned.
"What does it mean?"
Victor answered quietly.
"It means..."
"...she's alive."
Edward slowly lowered his pistol.
His face had gone completely pale.
"It can't be."
Richard turned toward him.
"You know who fired?"
Edward nodded once.
"I buried her myself."
"No."
Victor corrected him.
"You buried an empty coffin."
The nursery door slowly creaked open.
Soft footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Everyone raised their weapons.
An elderly woman walked into the room.
She wore a gray coat.
Silver hair rested neatly on her shoulders.
Her posture was elegant.
Confident.
Her eyes never showed fear.
Khloe stared in disbelief.
She recognized the face instantly.
Margaret Kensington.
The woman Jonathan Cole had named as his killer.
The woman every police report claimed had died eighteen years earlier.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"Grandmother..."
Margaret smiled gently.
"My sweet girl."
Vanessa stumbled backward.
"No..."
"I attended your funeral."
Margaret laughed softly.
"So did I."
Edward looked genuinely shaken.
"I spent twenty-three years searching for you."
Margaret removed her gloves.
"You searched for the wrong woman."
"You searched for a frightened widow."
"I'm not frightened anymore."
Khloe held Hope closer.
"You murdered my father."
Margaret looked directly into her eyes.
"Yes."
"I pulled the trigger."
The confession landed like thunder.
No excuses.
No denial.
Only truth.
Richard clenched his fists.
"My father protected you."
Margaret nodded.
"Charles always loved me."
"He believed he could hide what I'd done."
Gabriel whispered,
"And Jonathan protected Charles."
Victor finished the thought.
"Until Margaret decided both men had become liabilities."
Naomi activated the voice recorder on her phone.
"Say it again."
Margaret smiled.
"I killed Jonathan Cole."
"I framed Edward Harrington."
"I manipulated Charles."
"I created the Black Raven war."
"I destroyed every person who stood between me and absolute control."
Vanessa began crying.
"You used me."
Margaret looked at her granddaughter without emotion.
"You were useful."
"Nothing more."
Hope suddenly started crying.
The tiny sound echoed through the room.
Margaret slowly looked toward the baby.
For the first time...
A flicker of genuine emotion crossed her face.
"So that's Jonathan's granddaughter."
She took one slow step forward.
Khloe immediately backed away.
"Don't."
Margaret stopped.
"I won't hurt her."
"I've made many mistakes."
"But I don't kill children."
Edward laughed bitterly.
"How noble."
Before anyone could move...
Margaret reached into her coat.
Every weapon in the room aimed at her.
She slowly removed...
...the missing microSD card.
Everyone froze.
She smiled.
"You've all been chasing the wrong evidence."
She held up the tiny card.
"This recording proves I killed Jonathan."
"But it doesn't contain the greatest secret."
Khloe's voice trembled.
"What secret?"
Margaret's smile widened.
"The truth about Hope."
Silence.
Khloe instinctively held her daughter tighter.
Margaret looked directly at the baby.
Then calmly spoke the words that shattered everyone in the room.
"Hope Cole..."
"...isn't the only heir Jonathan left behind."
She dropped the microSD card onto the floor.
No one moved.
No one even breathed.
Because somewhere...
There was another child.
May you like
Another heir.
Who had remained hidden for more than twenty-three years.
