CHAPTER 9 The Secret Beneath Harrington Tower

CHAPTER 9

The Secret Beneath Harrington Tower

Richard Harrington stepped through the smoke with the calm confidence of a man who had already won.

The federal prison uniform was gone.

He wore a black overcoat over a charcoal suit.

Not a single trace remained of the frightened man who had supposedly been arrested hours earlier.

He slowly applauded.

"Impressive."

His eyes moved from Harrison...

...to Naomi...

...to Eleanor.

"I've spent years searching for Jonathan's final hiding place."

"And all I had to do..."

"...was follow Khloe."

Khloe felt sick.

"You planned every step."

Richard smiled.

"The courthouse."

"The lighthouse."

"The ledger."

"You found every piece for me."

Naomi quietly slipped the real ledger behind her back.

Richard noticed.

"That won't help."

He snapped his fingers.

Armed men poured into the basement from both ends of the corridor.

More than twenty.

They surrounded everyone within seconds.

Harrison looked around.

"No way out."

Richard nodded.

"I learned from my father's mistakes."

Eleanor slowly raised her pistol.

"I'll kill you before I hand over Jonathan's work."

Richard laughed.

"No, you won't."

"Why?"

"Because you're still protecting someone."

He looked directly into Eleanor's eyes.

"Your son."

The color drained from Eleanor's face.

Khloe stared at her aunt.

"You have a son?"

Eleanor lowered the gun.

Richard smiled.

"I've known about him for years."

"He lives under another name."

"He has a wife."

"Two little daughters."

"If you fire that weapon..."

"...they disappear before sunrise."

Eleanor's hand began trembling.

For the first time since appearing in the courthouse...

She looked afraid.

Khloe stepped forward despite Harrison's warning.

"You monster."

Richard looked at her almost sympathetically.

"No."

"I'm simply honest about leverage."

He pointed toward the ledger.

"Jonathan always believed truth defeated power."

"He was wrong."

"Power decides which truth survives."

Suddenly...

The courthouse lights came back on.

For half a second everyone looked upward.

That was all Naomi needed.

She slammed a fire extinguisher onto the concrete floor.

A cloud of white powder exploded through the basement.

Visibility vanished.

"Run!" Harrison shouted.

Gunfire erupted.

Bullets struck metal lockers.

Concrete splintered.

Khloe covered her head while Harrison dragged her into the hidden tunnel beneath Locker 314.

Naomi and Eleanor followed.

The secret stone door slammed shut behind them.

The tunnel was ancient.

Brick walls.

Rusted pipes.

Old electrical wiring.

Someone had built it nearly a century earlier.

Emergency lights flickered dimly overhead.

Naomi consulted the courthouse blueprints she had photographed.

"We have almost a mile."

"To where?"

"Harrington Tower."

Richard's headquarters.

Harrison laughed bitterly.

"We're escaping into the lion's den."

Naomi nodded.

"Exactly."

"Because he'll never expect us to go there willingly."

Behind the sealed wall...

Richard calmly brushed white powder from his coat.

One guard asked,

"Should we blow the tunnel?"

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"They're walking toward the final vault."

"The vault?"

Richard smiled.

"They think Jonathan hid evidence."

"He didn't."

"What did he hide?"

Richard looked toward the tunnel entrance.

"He hid ownership."

Forty minutes later...

The tunnel ended beneath Harrington Commercial Headquarters.

A steel ladder rose into darkness.

Naomi slowly pushed open the hatch.

They emerged inside an abandoned records room deep beneath the skyscraper.

Dust covered forgotten filing cabinets.

Broken computers lined the walls.

Everything looked untouched for decades.

Khloe noticed something immediately.

The room number.

B-17

She looked toward Harrison.

"My father used to work here."

He nodded.

"Before Charles promoted him."

Eleanor slowly walked toward an old wooden desk.

Her fingers traced the faded initials carved into the surface.

J.C.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Jonathan sat here every day."

She opened the center drawer.

Inside...

Lay a small cassette recorder.

A single cassette was already inside.

Attached to it was a note.

If Richard finds this room before you... everything is already lost.

Naomi pressed Play.

Jonathan Cole's voice filled the dusty basement.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...then Richard is no longer hiding behind his father."

Everyone listened in silence.

"He believes the Harrington fortune belongs to his family."

"It doesn't."

A pause.

"The original ownership documents were never destroyed."

"They're hidden inside the boardroom."

Khloe frowned.

"The boardroom?"

Jonathan continued.

"Every director has spent decades sitting above them without knowing."

"The safe is beneath the chairman's chair."

Harrison looked up toward the ceiling.

"The boardroom is directly above us."

Jonathan spoke one final sentence.

"Khloe..."

"If you're alive..."

"...the company was never meant to belong to Richard."

"It was always meant to belong to you."

The recording clicked off.

Silence filled the room.

Khloe couldn't speak.

Neither could Harrison.

Naomi finally broke the silence.

"If Jonathan was telling the truth..."

"...Richard never owned Harrington Commercial."

Eleanor slowly nodded.

"That's why he's been hunting the ledger."

"He doesn't need the money."

"He needs legal ownership."

Before anyone could move toward the stairs...

The elevator in the basement suddenly dinged.

Its doors slid open.

Richard stepped out alone.

No guards.

No weapons.

Only a thick folder in his hand.

He looked at Khloe and smiled.

"I knew your father would leave you here."

Then he held up the folder.

"I also found the boardroom safe..."

"...before you did."

He opened the folder just enough for everyone to see the old parchment documents inside.

"The company belongs to someone."

Richard's smile grew wider.

May you like

"And you're all about to learn..."

"...that it isn't you."
