CHAPTER 8 Locker 314

CHAPTER 8

Locker 314

The neonatal intensive care unit was silent except for the steady rhythm of tiny heartbeats.

Behind the glass, Baby Hope slept peacefully inside an incubator.

A pink knit cap covered her dark hair.

One impossibly small hand rested against the clear plastic wall.

Khloe stood beside her wheelchair, refusing to leave.

"I'll only be gone for a few hours," she whispered.

"You've already survived more than anyone should."

She gently touched the glass.

"So will I."

Dr. Elena Brooks watched from the doorway.

"You should still be in bed."

Khloe smiled faintly.

"I've spent too long lying down while other people decided my future."

Three hours later...

A black SUV rolled quietly into the underground parking garage beneath the Montgomery County Courthouse.

The same courthouse where Vanessa Kensington had shoved Khloe down the marble staircase only days earlier.

The building had been closed after the assault.

Crime-scene tape still blocked the public entrance.

Harrison flashed federal authorization provided by the task force now investigating Richard Harrington.

The security gate opened.

Naomi drove inside.

"No reporters."

"No police."

"No witnesses."

"Good," Harrison said.

"The fewer people who know about Locker 314, the better."

The courthouse looked different at night.

The grand marble halls were empty.

Every footstep echoed.

Khloe couldn't stop looking toward the staircase.

Dark stains remained where her blood had been cleaned from the stone.

She instinctively placed a hand over the bandages beneath her coat.

Naomi noticed.

"You don't have to do this."

"Yes," Khloe answered quietly.

"My father waited twenty-three years."

"I can walk these halls one more time."

The basement records level smelled of old paper and cold concrete.

A long corridor stretched before them.

Metal storage lockers lined both walls.

Numbers.

289...

301...

309...

Then—

314.

It looked ordinary.

Gray paint.

Small fingerprint scanner.

No keyhole.

No combination dial.

Only a single message engraved into the steel.

PROPERTY OF LIGHTHOUSE HOLDINGS

Harrison stared.

"So it was here all along."

Khloe slowly raised her hand.

"What if it's empty?"

Naomi shook her head.

"Jonathan Cole planned decades ahead."

"He wouldn't risk everything on an empty locker."

Khloe placed her thumb on the scanner.

Nothing happened.

A red light blinked once.

Then...

A calm electronic voice spoke.

Identity confirmed.

The lock clicked.

A hiss of compressed air escaped.

The heavy metal door slowly swung open.

Inside sat only three items.

A leather journal.

A sealed envelope.

An old VHS videotape labeled in black marker.

FOR THE COURTS

No gold.

No cash.

No diamonds.

Just evidence.

Naomi carefully removed the journal.

She opened the first page.

Unlike the book recovered from the lighthouse...

This one wasn't blank.

Every page contained handwritten accounting records.

Bank transfers.

Shell companies.

Bribes.

Political donations.

Judges.

Executives.

Dates.

Amounts.

Harrison's face hardened.

"My God..."

Naomi flipped several pages.

Then suddenly stopped.

"What is it?" Khloe asked.

Naomi turned the journal around.

One signature appeared over and over again.

Not Charles Harrington.

Not Richard Harrington.

Someone else.

Margaret Kensington.

Vanessa's mother.

Every major transfer had been approved by her.

Harrison frowned.

"I thought Charles controlled the money."

"So did everyone else," Naomi replied.

"But whoever kept these records believed Margaret was the real financial architect."

Khloe picked up the sealed envelope.

Across the front, in Jonathan Cole's handwriting, were five simple words.

For Harrison and Khloe Together.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Jonathan Cole standing beside a smiling woman holding a little girl.

Khloe recognized herself immediately.

She couldn't have been older than three.

But it wasn't her mother standing beside Jonathan.

It was Margaret Kensington.

Everyone froze.

Naomi looked from the photograph to the ledger.

"This changes everything."

Harrison slowly shook his head.

"Our families weren't enemies."

"They were partners."

Khloe stared at the smiling faces in the picture.

"Then why did everything fall apart?"

Only one item remained.

The VHS tape.

Naomi smiled.

"I brought something."

From her backpack she removed a portable VHS player used by investigators for old evidence.

The tape slid into place.

Static filled the screen.

Then...

Jonathan Cole appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Looking directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...I've probably been murdered."

Khloe covered her mouth.

Jonathan continued.

"I don't have much time."

"I trusted Charles Harrington."

"That was my greatest mistake."

He paused.

"But Charles wasn't the man giving the orders."

Naomi leaned closer.

Neither Harrison nor Khloe breathed.

Jonathan looked directly into the camera.

"The person controlling the Harrington fortune..."

"...is someone everyone believes is only a widow."

He reached toward the lens.

"The mastermind is—"

The screen suddenly filled with static.

The tape stopped.

The player ejected the cassette automatically.

Naomi stared in disbelief.

"It was erased."

"No," Harrison said.

He held up the tape.

"The film has been cut."

Someone had physically removed the final seconds decades earlier.

Before anyone could speak...

The courthouse lights suddenly went out.

Emergency power failed.

Darkness swallowed the basement.

Then footsteps echoed through the corridor.

Slow.

Deliberate.

A woman's voice broke the silence.

"You should have left the past buried."

Khloe recognized that voice instantly.

Not Vanessa.

Not Margaret.

Aunt Eleanor.

The woman everyone believed had died twenty years ago.

She stepped out of the darkness holding a pistol.

Behind her stood six armed men.

And in her other hand...

She held a tiny pink baby blanket.

Hope's blanket.

Khloe's heart stopped.

"Where is my daughter?"

Eleanor smiled without warmth.

"Exactly where your father knew she would be."

May you like

"And if you want to see her again..."

"...you'll hand me Jonathan's ledger."
