CHAPTER 5 The Siege

CHAPTER 5

The Siege

The emergency lights bathed the warehouse in flashes of crimson.

Outside, at least eight black SUVs formed a perfect circle around the building.

No headlights.

No license plates.

Only silence.

Then the same calm voice echoed through the loudspeaker again.

"Mr. Cole..."

"You have one minute."

Naomi quietly walked toward the security monitors.

Four cameras were already offline.

The remaining two showed heavily armed men taking positions around every exit.

"This wasn't random," she said.

"They knew exactly where we'd be."

Harrison's jaw tightened.

"We have a leak."

Khloe instinctively placed both hands over her stomach.

Her daughter kicked sharply.

Almost as if warning her.

Richard Harrington stood inside his office nearly thirty miles away.

The television was muted.

The stock market crawled across the bottom of the screen.

He wasn't watching it.

He was watching another monitor.

A live drone feed.

The secure warehouse appeared from above.

Every entrance.

Every vehicle.

Every person.

Vanessa walked into the room.

"Is it over?"

Richard slowly sipped his coffee.

"Not yet."

"Are they going to kill Harrison?"

Richard smiled faintly.

"I didn't ask for Harrison."

"Then who?"

He looked directly at Vanessa.

"I asked for Khloe."

Vanessa frowned.

"Why?"

Richard answered without emotion.

"Because she's the only one who can open what's beneath the lighthouse."

Back inside the warehouse...

Naomi pulled another monitor online.

The picture flickered.

One face became visible.

Khloe stopped breathing.

She knew him.

Or rather...

She had seen him once before.

In an old family photograph.

Standing beside Charles Harrington.

The silver-haired man now leading the armed team outside looked twenty years older.

But it was the same face.

Harrison leaned closer.

"Who is he?"

Khloe whispered,

"He worked with Richard's father."

Naomi zoomed in.

The security software identified him instantly.

WILLIAM MERCER

Former Chief Financial Officer.

Harrington Commercial.

Reported deceased.

Fifteen years earlier.

Naomi stared at the screen.

"He isn't dead."

Harrison's eyes narrowed.

"Neither, apparently, is half this conspiracy."

The loudspeaker crackled again.

"Thirty seconds."

William Mercer calmly stepped forward into camera view.

He wasn't holding a weapon.

Only an old leather folder.

"I know you're listening."

His voice carried through hidden speakers.

"Jonathan Cole stole something that never belonged to him."

Harrison pressed the intercom button.

"My father copied evidence."

William smiled.

"He stole history."

Khloe stepped toward the microphone.

"My father died because of your company."

"No."

William's smile widened.

"He died because he trusted the wrong person."

Silence.

Khloe's heartbeat accelerated.

"What does that mean?"

"You should ask your brother."

Every eye in the room turned toward Harrison.

He didn't move.

William continued.

"Harrison has protected you from many truths."

The transmission suddenly ended.

Khloe slowly faced Harrison.

"What is he talking about?"

"I don't know."

"Liar."

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Naomi quietly stepped between them.

"This is exactly what they want."

Khloe looked away.

She knew Naomi was right.

Division.

Doubt.

Confusion.

The oldest strategy in the world.

Suddenly...

One of the warehouse windows exploded inward.

Glass scattered across the concrete floor.

Smoke flooded the room.

"Tear gas!" Naomi shouted.

She immediately pulled protective masks from an emergency cabinet.

One for herself.

One for Harrison.

One for Khloe.

The fourth...

Too late.

Smoke filled the hallway.

Khloe coughed violently.

Her vision blurred.

The baby kicked repeatedly.

"Harry..."

Harrison grabbed her hand.

"I'm here."

Naomi opened a hidden steel door.

"Move!"

The three of them disappeared into a reinforced hallway beneath the warehouse.

Above them...

Boots thundered through the offices.

The attackers had entered.

The underground corridor stretched nearly two hundred feet.

Concrete.

Steel.

No windows.

Emergency lighting glowed dimly overhead.

Naomi sealed the blast door behind them.

"They'll breach it."

"How long?"

"Five minutes."

Harrison looked at the blueprint mounted on the wall.

"There's another exit."

Naomi shook her head.

"It leads to the river."

"Boats?"

"Only one."

Khloe suddenly stopped walking.

A sharp pain shot across her abdomen.

She gasped.

Harrison immediately turned.

"What is it?"

"My stomach..."

Another pain.

Stronger.

Naomi checked her watch.

"Contractions?"

"I don't know."

Khloe leaned against the wall.

Her breathing became uneven.

"No..."

She looked down.

A small stain spread across the front of her navy maternity dress.

Blood.

Harrison's face lost all color.

"We're going to the hospital."

"No."

Naomi's voice was firm.

"They'll expect that."

"We don't have a choice."

"We do."

She opened another security locker.

Inside waited a fully equipped emergency medical backpack.

"I prepared for this."

Khloe looked at her.

"You expected me to go into labor?"

"I expected Richard to create enough stress to try."

Naomi quickly examined her.

"The bleeding is light."

"Is the baby okay?"

"I don't know."

"We need an ultrasound."

"We need to survive the next ten minutes first."

The blast door shook violently.

Once.

Twice.

Then again.

"They're through the first lock," Naomi said.

Harrison lifted Khloe into his arms.

She protested weakly.

"I can walk."

"No."

"I'm too heavy."

"You've never been heavy."

For the first time in days...

Khloe smiled.

Only for a second.

The corridor finally opened into an underground dock.

A small patrol boat floated beside the concrete platform.

Naomi untied it.

Just as Harrison stepped aboard with Khloe...

The blast door behind them exploded inward.

Gunfire echoed through the tunnel.

Naomi returned fire.

The boat engine roared to life.

Water sprayed behind them.

The attackers reached the dock seconds too late.

William Mercer calmly watched the boat disappear into the darkness.

He didn't fire.

One of his men looked confused.

"Sir?"

William smiled.

"They're going exactly where we want them."

Half an hour later...

The boat docked beneath an abandoned lighthouse overlooking the Delaware River.

Khloe stared upward.

The tower stood against the moonlit sky.

Old.

Silent.

Forgotten.

The lighthouse.

The same symbol her father had left behind.

Harrison helped her onto the dock.

Naomi looked around carefully.

"No one followed us."

"So this is it," Khloe whispered.

"The place Dad wanted us to find."

They climbed the spiral staircase.

At the very top...

A single iron chest rested beneath the great glass lantern.

No lock.

Only a keyhole.

Harrison slowly removed the brass key from his pocket.

He handed it to Khloe.

"Why me?"

He smiled sadly.

"Because Dad said it belonged to you."

Khloe inserted the key.

The mechanism clicked.

The lid slowly opened.

Inside...

Not money.

Not gold.

Not company records.

Only a single leather-bound journal.

On the cover...

Written in Jonathan Cole's unmistakable handwriting...

THE HARRINGTON LEDGER

Khloe reached for it.

The moment her fingers touched the journal...

A red laser dot appeared on the cover.

Then another.

Then another.

Naomi's face changed instantly.

"Snipers!"

Before anyone could react...

A single gunshot shattered the lighthouse window.

The bullet struck the journal...

Sending it flying out of Khloe's hands...

May you like

Straight through the broken glass...

And into the dark waters of the Delaware River below.
