Chapter 2: Santiago Learns the Truth

Santiago laughed, but it came out wrong.
“Your daughter?” he said. “No. Elena is a schoolteacher.”
Alejandro looked at him as if Santiago had said something childish.
“She was a schoolteacher because she wanted to be,” Alejandro replied. “Not because she needed your name, your money, or this house.”
Santiago’s jaw tightened.
Carmen came down the stairs slowly. “There must be some misunderstanding.”
Alejandro turned his eyes to her.
“No misunderstanding, Señora Rivas. I heard what you said.”
Carmen’s face paled.
Elena looked at her father. “You heard?”
Alejandro lifted a small phone from his coat pocket. “I heard enough.”
