Chapter 1 – The Call That Changed Everything

The mansion had never been so quiet.
Just moments earlier, laughter had filled every corner of the Hawthorne Estate. Crystal chandeliers sparkled above hundreds of elegantly dressed guests. A string quartet played beside the marble fireplace while servers carried silver trays loaded with champagne and expensive hors d'oeuvres.
Now the music had stopped.
Every pair of eyes stared toward the bottom of the grand staircase.
Amelia Hawthorne lay motionless on the polished wooden floor.
Blood stained the sleeve of her cream-colored maternity dress. One trembling hand rested protectively over her seven-month pregnant belly while the other struggled to keep her balance against the cold marble.
Pain shot through her back every time she breathed.
Above her, standing on the second-floor balcony, Vanessa Crawford looked down with burning hatred in her emerald-green evening gown.
"You destroyed everything!" Vanessa screamed.
"You stole my future!"
"She should apologize!"
Several guests looked uneasily at one another.
Others lowered their eyes.
No one wanted to become involved.
Vanessa belonged to one of the city's wealthiest families. Her father financed election campaigns. Her brother owned television stations. Her fiancé sat on the board of Hawthorne Industries.
Nobody wanted to stand against that kind of power.
A middle-aged maid hurried toward Vanessa.
"Miss Crawford, please..."
"This has gone too far."
Vanessa violently shook the woman away.
"Don't touch me!"
"She deserves this!"
Below, Amelia slowly opened her eyes.
Her ears rang.
The room spun around her.
She could barely hear the frightened voices surrounding her.
"Someone call an ambulance!"
"She's bleeding!"
"Protect the baby!"
"Where's her husband?"
Her husband.
Nathan Hawthorne.
She searched the crowd until she found him standing near the fireplace.
He wasn't running toward her.
He wasn't calling for help.
He simply stood there.
Watching.
His face remained expressionless.
Not worried.
Not angry.
Almost...
...expectant.
As though he had been waiting for this moment.
Amelia's heart broke far more painfully than her injured body.
Three years of marriage flashed before her eyes.
The promises.
The wedding.
The nights they planned their future together.
The excitement when they learned they were expecting a daughter.
Had all of it been a lie?
Another sharp pain spread through her abdomen.
She instinctively wrapped both arms around her stomach.
"It's okay," she whispered to the tiny life growing inside her.
"Mommy's here."
"I won't let anything happen to you."
Then she remembered.
Exactly forty-two minutes earlier.
She had received an anonymous message.
One sentence.
One photograph.
One warning.
Don't drink the champagne. They're planning something tonight.
Attached to the message had been a photograph taken inside Nathan's private office.
Nathan.
Vanessa.
Nathan's attorney.
And a stack of legal papers.
The words across the top of the document still haunted her.
TRANSFER OF ESTATE AFTER MATERNAL DEATH
At first she had refused to believe it.
Surely it was fake.
Surely someone was trying to destroy her marriage.
So she quietly searched the mansion herself.
She opened doors she had never been allowed to enter.
She discovered financial records.
Insurance policies.
Secret accounts.
Then...
She overheard the conversation that changed everything.
Nathan's voice.
Calm.
Cold.
"If she loses the baby..."
Vanessa answered.
"Even better."
Nathan replied without hesitation.
"If both of them die tonight..."
"...everything comes to us."
Amelia had frozen outside the library door.
She had accidentally stepped backward.
The floorboard creaked.
Silence.
The library door opened.
Nathan appeared.
For one terrifying second, their eyes met.
He knew.
He knew she had heard everything.
She turned and ran.
Vanessa chased her upstairs.
The shouting began.
Guests gathered beneath the staircase.
Then—
One violent shove.
Darkness.
Now...
Lying on the floor...
Amelia understood.
This had never been an accident.
It had been an execution.
Only she had survived.
Barely.
Ignoring the unbearable pain, Amelia slowly reached inside her handbag.
The guests watched silently.
Some assumed she was calling an ambulance.
Others expected her to phone her family.
Instead...
She removed a small black cellphone that almost nobody knew she owned.
It wasn't connected to her regular number.
Only one person had it.
With shaking fingers she pressed a single contact.
The call connected immediately.
A calm voice answered.
"Detective Carter."
Amelia struggled to breathe.
"It's happened."
No explanation was necessary.
There was a brief silence.
Then his tone changed instantly.
"Are you alive?"
"Barely."
"The baby?"
"I don't know."
Another pause.
Then Amelia whispered six words they had agreed upon weeks ago.
"They've shown their real faces."
Detective Carter spoke only one sentence.
"Don't hang up."
The sound of keyboards echoed through the phone.
Voices shouted in the background.
Doors slammed.
Someone yelled...
"Mobilize everyone!"
Another voice:
"Search warrant approved!"
Within seconds, Carter returned.
"Listen carefully."
"Stay where you are."
"Help is already coming."
Amelia looked toward Nathan.
He was walking toward her now.
Finally.
But not with concern.
He crouched beside her.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"You should have stayed quiet."
A chill spread through Amelia.
"You knew," she whispered.
Nathan smiled.
A smile she had never seen before.
Cold.
Heartless.
"If you had signed the papers..."
"...none of this would've happened."
Amelia stared at him.
Every illusion disappeared.
The man she loved had never existed.
Only this stranger.
A murderer wearing her husband's face.
Suddenly...
The distant sound of sirens echoed through the night.
One siren.
Then another.
Then several more.
The guests exchanged confused glances.
Vanessa frowned.
"Why are there so many police?"
Nathan slowly stood.
His confidence disappeared.
Outside the mansion gates...
Headlights illuminated the enormous estate.
Police cruisers.
Unmarked SUVs.
Crime scene vans.
An ambulance.
Forensic investigators.
More vehicles continued arriving.
The iron gates swung open.
Within seconds, dozens of officers poured onto the property.
Guests gasped.
Detective Daniel Carter stepped out of the lead vehicle.
Tall.
Calm.
Wearing a dark navy overcoat over his suit.
Behind him walked investigators carrying sealed evidence cases.
Notepads.
Camera equipment.
Evidence markers.
They moved with practiced precision.
Carter didn't look at the crowd.
He walked directly toward Amelia.
Then he saw the blood.
His expression hardened.
He knelt beside her.
"Can you hear me?"
She nodded weakly.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I wasn't fast enough."
"You were exactly on time," Carter answered.
He carefully accepted the tiny silver pendant Amelia removed from beneath her dress.
Nobody else noticed.
But Carter immediately understood.
It wasn't jewelry.
It was a recording device.
It had been recording everything...
For the past three months.
Nathan's face instantly lost all color.
Vanessa took one frightened step backward.
Detective Carter slowly stood.
He looked around the silent ballroom before speaking in a voice every guest could hear.
"Effective immediately..."
"This mansion is now an active crime scene."
"No one leaves."
"No one touches anything."
He turned toward Nathan.
"And Mr. Hawthorne..."
"I suggest you contact your attorney."
"Because before sunrise..."
"...your entire empire is going to collapse."
Outside...
More black SUVs entered through the gates.
But they didn't belong to the police.
Their doors opened.
Men in dark business suits stepped out carrying locked briefcases.
One elderly gentleman exited the final limousine.
The moment Amelia saw him...
Tears filled her eyes.
Nathan's expression changed completely.
He recognized the man.
Everyone in the business world did.
The elderly gentleman removed his gloves and stared directly at Nathan.
Then he spoke one sentence that left the ballroom frozen in silence.
"Mr. Hawthorne..."
May you like
"You've been spending my granddaughter's fortune for far too long."
