Chapter 7 – The Last Heir

The fire burned for nearly four hours.

By sunrise, Blackwood's underground archive had collapsed into twisted steel and ash.

Firefighters battled the flames while forensic investigators searched desperately for anything that had survived.

Detective Carter stood behind the yellow tape, staring at the smoking ruins.

"It was too clean," he said quietly.

His partner, Detective Lisa Monroe, nodded.

"They knew exactly where to place the explosives."

"Which means they knew we'd find the vault."

Carter looked toward the ruins.

"No."

"They wanted us to find it."

Lisa frowned.

"What?"

"They wanted us chasing old evidence while something else was happening."

Almost as if answering him, Carter's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Carter."

The voice on the other end belonged to Officer Reynolds.

"Detective..."

"You need to get to the hospital."

"There was an attempted kidnapping."

Only twenty minutes earlier...

Amelia had finally fallen asleep.

The doctors had increased her pain medication, and for the first time since the fall, she was resting peacefully.

Outside her room, two armed officers guarded the hallway.

At least...

That was the plan.

At 5:17 a.m., a nurse approached them carrying a medication tray.

"I have Mrs. Hawthorne's morning antibiotics."

The younger officer smiled politely.

"Go ahead."

The nurse entered the room.

Thirty seconds later...

A faint metallic click echoed from inside.

The older officer frowned.

"Did you hear that?"

Before either could react—

The lights on the entire hospital floor suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the corridor.

Emergency alarms began flashing red.

Someone shouted downstairs.

"Power failure!"

The backup generators should have activated within seconds.

They didn't.

Inside Amelia's room...

The "nurse" quietly locked the door.

She removed her surgical mask.

She wasn't a nurse.

She was the elegant young woman Jonathan Black had met on the rooftop.

Her name was Evelyn Black.

Jonathan's daughter.

She calmly opened a black medical bag.

Inside were no medicines.

Only zip ties.

A syringe.

And a suppressed pistol.

She walked toward Amelia's bed.

Sleeping.

Defenseless.

Exactly as planned.

Amelia's eyes opened.

Not because of the footsteps.

Because of instinct.

Years of subtle manipulation by Nathan had taught her to recognize danger before she understood it.

She looked up.

The woman wasn't smiling.

She wasn't holding medicine.

She was holding a gun.

"Good morning," Evelyn said softly.

"You've caused my father a great deal of trouble."

Amelia instinctively placed both hands over her stomach.

"Who are you?"

"My name doesn't matter."

"But since we're unlikely to meet again..."

She smiled politely.

"I'm Evelyn Black."

Amelia's blood ran cold.

Black.

The surname from the files.

Jonathan Black's daughter.

Evelyn noticed the fear.

"Good."

"That means you understand."

She raised the syringe.

"You're coming with me."

Outside...

The officers finally forced the locked door open.

Too late.

The room was empty.

The hospital bed was empty.

The window stood open.

One officer rushed toward it.

"The fire escape!"

The kidnappers were already gone.

Or so they thought.

Three floors below...

Evelyn guided Amelia through an abandoned service corridor.

Amelia struggled to walk.

Her injuries made every step agonizing.

"Please..."

"My baby..."

Evelyn didn't slow down.

"My father specifically requested you alive."

"Your child wasn't mentioned."

Amelia felt terror unlike anything she'd experienced before.

She wasn't afraid for herself.

Only for her daughter.

Then...

She noticed something.

The woman holding the pistol walked with absolute confidence.

She already knew the hospital layout.

This wasn't their first visit.

Someone inside the hospital had helped them.

Suddenly...

The emergency lights flickered back on.

Power returned.

Security cameras restarted.

Hospital elevators began moving again.

Evelyn cursed under her breath.

"No..."

Then every speaker inside the building crackled to life.

"Attention."

"This is Detective Daniel Carter."

The announcement echoed through every floor.

"The hospital has been completely surrounded."

"There are one hundred and twelve police officers inside this building."

"Evelyn Black..."

"We know you're here."

Silence.

Then Carter spoke again.

"The exits are sealed."

"You have nowhere to go."

Evelyn smiled.

"They always say that."

She grabbed Amelia's arm more tightly.

"Come on."

Detective Carter wasn't bluffing.

Police officers flooded every stairwell.

SWAT teams moved floor by floor.

Snipers took positions on nearby rooftops.

Richard Sterling arrived just as officers established a perimeter.

He ran toward Carter.

"My granddaughter?"

"We're looking."

"No."

Richard grabbed Carter's arm.

"You don't understand."

"If Blackwood wanted her dead..."

"They would've killed her already."

Carter frowned.

"What are you saying?"

"They need her alive."

"Why?"

Richard stared at the hospital.

"Because they still haven't found what Elizabeth hid."

Inside the maintenance tunnels beneath the hospital...

Evelyn finally stopped.

She pulled Amelia into an empty storage room.

"You've made this much harder than necessary."

Amelia leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.

"What do you want?"

Evelyn reached into her pocket.

She unfolded an old photograph.

It showed Elizabeth Sterling holding a newborn Amelia.

On the back was written one sentence.

The key belongs to the child.

Evelyn held the photograph in front of Amelia.

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

"Don't lie."

"I've never seen that picture."

Evelyn studied her face.

She realized Amelia was telling the truth.

Which meant...

Jonathan had been wrong.

Amelia truly didn't know.

At that exact moment...

Jonathan Black sat inside a private helicopter circling the city.

His phone rang.

"Evelyn?"

"I have Amelia."

"Excellent."

"But she doesn't know."

Jonathan's smile disappeared.

"What?"

"She has no idea where Elizabeth hid it."

Silence.

Then Jonathan quietly said,

"Bring her anyway."

Before Evelyn could answer—

Gunfire erupted inside the tunnel.

Police had found them.

Bullets struck the concrete walls.

Evelyn shoved Amelia behind a support column.

"Stay down!"

Detective Carter's voice echoed through the tunnel.

"Evelyn!"

"It's over!"

She fired twice.

Officers returned fire.

Concrete exploded around them.

Amelia covered her ears.

Her heart pounded violently.

Not from the gunfire.

From the contractions.

A sharp pain spread across her abdomen.

She gasped.

"No..."

Not now.

Please...

Not now.

Warm fluid ran down her legs.

Evelyn looked down.

Her expression changed instantly.

"You're in labor."

Amelia nodded through tears.

"My baby..."

The contractions came again.

Harder.

Faster.

For one brief moment...

Evelyn hesitated.

She had expected fear.

Resistance.

Not this.

A pregnant woman.

Terrified.

Trying only to save her unborn child.

Jonathan's voice echoed through her memory.

Never let emotion interfere with the mission.

She raised her pistol again.

Then stopped.

Because Amelia whispered something she never expected.

"Please..."

"My daughter hasn't hurt anyone."

Evelyn lowered the gun.

Only slightly.

Outside the room...

Detective Carter heard the crying.

He realized exactly what was happening.

He slowly lowered his own weapon.

Then shouted,

"Evelyn!"

"If Amelia gives birth in that tunnel..."

"Neither of them may survive."

Silence answered him.

Then...

For the first time in twenty years...

Evelyn Black questioned an order given by her father.

She looked at Amelia.

Then at the pistol in her hand.

And for the first time...

May you like

She didn't know which one to choose.
