Chapter 5 – The Maid Who Knew Too Much

The intensive care unit was unusually quiet.

Morning sunlight filtered through the hospital windows, casting pale golden lines across Amelia's room. Outside, two police officers stood guard at the entrance. Detective Carter had ordered twenty-four-hour protection after the anonymous note was discovered beneath Amelia's pillow.

Someone had entered the hospital.

Someone connected to Blackwood.

Someone who wanted Amelia alive...

Or dead.

No one knew which.

Detective Carter carefully unfolded the anonymous note for the tenth time.

Don't trust Eleanor. She sacrificed her own son once. She'll do it again.

The handwriting had been deliberately disguised.

No fingerprints.

No DNA.

Nothing.

But one sentence refused to leave his mind.

"She sacrificed her own son."

Nathan was Eleanor's only child.

What could that possibly mean?

His thoughts were interrupted by a knock.

Officer Reynolds entered quickly.

"Detective."

"The maid is asking to see you."

"Maria?"

"She says she remembered something."

Carter stood immediately.

"Bring her."

Maria Alvarez entered the interview room clutching a worn leather handbag.

She looked exhausted.

She hadn't slept.

Dark circles rested beneath her eyes.

"I've been afraid for a very long time," she whispered.

"But after what happened to Miss Amelia..."

"I can't stay silent anymore."

Carter poured her a cup of tea.

"Take your time."

Maria nodded.

"There wasn't just one plan."

"What do you mean?"

"There have been many."

Silence filled the room.

Maria slowly opened her handbag.

From inside she removed an old envelope.

Its edges had yellowed with age.

The paper inside looked almost thirty years old.

"I've kept this since 1998."

Carter carefully accepted it.

"What is it?"

"I found it after Mrs. Elizabeth Sterling died."

His heartbeat quickened.

Elizabeth.

Amelia's mother.

Maria continued.

"I was cleaning Charles Hawthorne's study."

"He ordered everyone out."

"But after he left..."

"I found this beneath the fireplace."

Carter unfolded the letter.

It wasn't handwritten.

It had been typed.

At the bottom were only three initials.

B.W.

The letter read:

The Sterling woman remains a problem.

Her daughter must never inherit.

Charles has agreed to proceed.

Payment will be transferred after confirmation.

No witnesses.

Carter stared at the paper.

The date at the top froze his blood.

Three weeks...

Before Elizabeth's boat exploded.

At that very moment...

Nathan Hawthorne sat alone inside a police interrogation room.

He had requested his attorney.

Instead...

Detective Lisa Monroe entered carrying a single photograph.

She placed it on the table.

Nathan looked down.

His face stiffened.

The photograph showed him leaving an abandoned warehouse two nights earlier.

The building belonged to...

Blackwood Holdings.

Lisa crossed her arms.

"Care to explain?"

Nathan remained silent.

She slid another photograph beside the first.

This one showed him shaking hands with an older man.

The man's face wasn't visible.

Only the distinctive black oak tattoo on his wrist.

The same symbol found on Amelia's note.

Lisa watched Nathan carefully.

"Who is he?"

Nathan finally spoke.

"I don't know."

"You don't know someone you met in secret?"

"My attorney told me not to answer."

Lisa smiled slightly.

"He gave you excellent advice."

She gathered the photographs.

"But here's the problem."

She leaned closer.

"We already know who he is."

Nathan's eyes flickered.

Only for a fraction of a second.

It was enough.

Across town...

Forensic analysts searched Blackwood's abandoned warehouse.

Dust covered everything.

Rusted machinery stood untouched.

Broken windows allowed rainwater to collect across the concrete floor.

At first glance...

It appeared deserted.

Then one investigator noticed fresh tire tracks.

Another found recently extinguished cigarette butts.

Someone had been there only hours earlier.

Detective Carter arrived just as technicians pried open a heavy steel door hidden behind old storage shelves.

Inside...

A secret office.

Perfectly clean.

Modern computers.

Satellite phones.

Encrypted hard drives.

Walls covered with maps.

And one enormous bulletin board.

Every photograph on it featured members of two families.

The Sterlings.

The Hawthornes.

Some photographs were decades old.

Others had been taken only days earlier.

Amelia leaving her doctor's office.

Nathan entering the mansion.

Richard Sterling at a charity gala.

Detective Carter slowly stepped closer.

"They've been watching all of them."

One technician gasped.

"Detective..."

"You need to see this."

Inside a locked cabinet sat dozens of videotapes.

Each carefully labeled.

STERLING 1998

BOAT

FIRE

INSURANCE

AMELIA

Carter's pulse raced.

They had finally found Blackwood's archive.

Meanwhile...

Richard Sterling met privately with Amelia.

She looked stronger than the previous night, though pain still shadowed every movement.

Richard sat beside her bed.

"There is something I've hidden from you."

Amelia smiled weakly.

"I thought we were done with secrets."

"So did I."

He reached into his coat pocket and removed an old photograph.

It showed two young women laughing aboard a sailboat.

One was Elizabeth.

The other...

Eleanor Hawthorne.

Amelia frowned.

"My mother and Eleanor were friends?"

"They were sisters."

The room became completely silent.

Amelia stared at him.

"No..."

Richard nodded slowly.

"They were twins."

Amelia's breath caught.

"Then..."

"Nathan and I..."

Richard closed his eyes.

"You're cousins."

The truth struck Amelia harder than the fall down the staircase.

Everything she believed about her marriage shattered.

Nathan hadn't simply married her for love.

He had been placed into her life.

Planned.

Prepared.

Manipulated.

For years.

At the mansion, officers finally located Eleanor Hawthorne.

She had remained strangely calm throughout the investigation.

Almost relieved.

Detective Carter entered her sitting room.

She looked up from her untouched cup of tea.

"I've been expecting you."

"You knew we'd discover the truth."

"No."

She smiled sadly.

"I knew the truth would eventually discover me."

Carter sat opposite her.

"Did you send Amelia the warning?"

Eleanor remained silent.

"Did you?"

Finally...

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I couldn't watch another member of my family die."

Carter frowned.

"You helped plan the attack."

"I know."

"You were heard discussing Amelia's death."

"I know."

"You encouraged Nathan."

A tear rolled down Eleanor's cheek.

"I know."

"Then why warn her?"

Eleanor looked toward the rain outside.

"Because Nathan isn't my son."

Carter stared.

"What?"

She folded her trembling hands.

"The baby I gave birth to..."

"...died twenty-eight years ago."

The detective felt the room spin.

"What are you saying?"

Eleanor whispered the words she had carried for decades.

"The man you arrested..."

"isn't the child I raised."

Before Carter could speak again, the door burst open.

Officer Reynolds rushed inside.

"Detective!"

"What is it?"

"We've identified the unknown man from the warehouse photographs."

Carter stood.

"Who is he?"

Reynolds swallowed hard.

"Former FBI Special Agent..."

"Jonathan Black."

"The man who disappeared twenty-seven years ago after being accused of selling classified investigations to organized crime."

Carter's expression darkened.

"And now?"

Reynolds handed him another file.

"He isn't just working for Blackwood."

"He founded it."

Carter looked back at Eleanor.

She lowered her head.

Almost as if she had expected this moment.

Then she whispered one final sentence.

"You still don't understand."

"Jonathan Black doesn't work for Blackwood..."

May you like

"He is Blackwood."
