Chapter 10 – The Man Behind the Smile

The photograph slipped from Richard Sterling's trembling hands.

It fluttered onto the weathered wooden floor of Boathouse Seven.

Detective Carter bent down and picked it up.

He looked from the faded picture of the little boy to the wedding photograph Richard had taken from his wallet.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

The same sharp jawline.

The same pale blue eyes.

The same small scar beneath the left eyebrow.

Only the age had changed.

Richard whispered again,

"He stood beside Nathan at the wedding."

"He toasted their marriage."

"He hugged Amelia."

Carter's expression hardened.

"He wasn't protecting Nathan."

"He was watching Amelia."

Back at police headquarters...

Facial recognition specialists immediately began comparing the two photographs.

Within minutes, a match appeared.

Gabriel Cross

Age: 34.

Occupation:

Corporate Security Consultant.

Former military contractor.

No criminal record.

No known family.

Detective Lisa Monroe frowned.

"That's impossible."

Carter looked at the screen.

"What?"

"The military records are fake."

"How do you know?"

"Because half of his deployments happened on dates when he was photographed attending charity galas."

Someone had carefully built Gabriel Cross an entirely false identity.

Meanwhile...

Gabriel sat alone inside an expensive downtown restaurant.

The lunch crowd filled the room.

No one paid attention to the well-dressed man quietly eating steak by the window.

His phone vibrated.

One message.

THEY FOUND THE BOATHOUSE.

He calmly finished chewing before replying.

EXPECTED.

Another message arrived.

JONATHAN WANTS TO SEE YOU.

Gabriel sighed.

He left cash on the table.

As he walked out, the hostess smiled warmly.

"Have a wonderful afternoon, Mr. Cross."

He smiled back.

"You too."

No one looking at him would have imagined he had spent his entire life serving one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in the country.

Thirty minutes later...

Jonathan Black waited inside an abandoned cathedral converted into Blackwood's headquarters.

Sunlight streamed through broken stained-glass windows.

Dust floated through the air.

Despite the ruin surrounding them, the interior had been transformed into an elegant command center.

Large digital displays covered one wall.

Financial markets.

Police movements.

News broadcasts.

Every screen monitored a different part of the investigation.

Jonathan stood before them with his hands behind his back.

Gabriel entered.

"You wanted to see me."

Jonathan didn't turn around.

"You've disappointed me."

Gabriel remained calm.

"Evelyn failed."

"She chose compassion."

Jonathan nodded.

"Yes."

"And compassion spreads."

Finally he turned.

"I won't lose you as well."

Gabriel met his gaze without fear.

"You won't."

Jonathan studied him for a long moment.

"You've always been my finest student."

"I know."

"I raised you."

"I know."

"I saved you."

Gabriel's voice became quieter.

"Did you?"

Jonathan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Gabriel slowly removed a folded newspaper clipping from his pocket.

He placed it on the table.

Jonathan recognized it immediately.

A twenty-eight-year-old article.

MISSING INFANT AFTER LAKE ORION EXPLOSION

Jonathan's expression remained unreadable.

"You've been investigating me."

Gabriel answered honestly.

"For years."

Across the city...

Amelia finally felt strong enough to sit beside the hospital window.

Her contractions had stopped.

Her daughter remained safe.

But sleep refused to come.

Everything she believed about her life had fallen apart.

Nathan had never loved her.

Blackwood had hunted her since birth.

Her mother had been murdered.

Then Eleanor's words returned.

"My real son disappeared."

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

Detective Carter entered carrying a folder.

"We identified the little boy."

Amelia looked up.

"Who is he?"

"Gabriel Cross."

She frowned.

"I've met him."

Carter nodded.

"He was Nathan's best man."

Amelia remembered immediately.

Gabriel had always been polite.

Quiet.

Respectful.

Unlike Nathan's arrogant business partners.

He once spent an entire afternoon helping Richard Sterling down a flight of stairs during a charity event.

He had even sent flowers after Amelia's miscarriage three years earlier.

"He never seemed..."

"Dangerous?"

Carter nodded.

"That's exactly what worries me."

That evening...

Eleanor Hawthorne requested another meeting.

This time she asked only for Amelia.

No detectives.

No lawyers.

Just the two of them.

The guards remained outside the room.

Eleanor looked exhausted.

"I need to tell you something before Jonathan silences me forever."

Amelia sat quietly.

"I'll listen."

Eleanor reached into her purse.

She removed a faded photograph.

Three children stood smiling in a garden.

Nathan.

Amelia.

Another little boy.

"Who's that?"

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Gabriel."

Amelia stared.

"We played together?"

"When you were five."

"I don't remember."

"You weren't supposed to."

Eleanor sighed.

"Jonathan made certain of that."

"What do you mean?"

Eleanor looked toward the ceiling as memories flooded back.

Twenty-nine years earlier...

Jonathan Black had brought a little boy to Hawthorne Manor.

"This is Gabriel."

"He'll stay here for a while."

Charles Hawthorne never questioned it.

Neither did Eleanor.

The children grew up together.

Nathan adored Gabriel.

Amelia visited often with her mother.

The three children spent every summer together.

Then...

One afternoon...

Elizabeth Sterling saw Jonathan teaching Gabriel how to shoot a handgun.

The boy was only six.

Elizabeth was horrified.

She confronted Jonathan immediately.

That was the day she decided to expose Blackwood.

Two weeks later...

Her boat exploded.

Amelia sat speechless.

"My mother died because she tried to save Gabriel?"

Eleanor nodded.

"She believed children deserved a chance to choose their own lives."

A tear slid down Eleanor's face.

"She told me..."

'One day Gabriel will discover the truth.'

'I only hope he survives it.'"

At that same moment...

Gabriel drove alone toward Jonathan's headquarters.

Rain hammered against the windshield.

He stopped at a red light.

Then noticed something unusual.

A little girl waited beside the crosswalk.

About six years old.

She smiled at her father while holding his hand.

For a brief moment...

Gabriel remembered nothing about his own childhood.

No birthdays.

No bedtime stories.

No mother.

Only training.

Orders.

Discipline.

Violence.

The traffic light turned green.

The little girl waved happily to her father.

Gabriel drove away.

But something inside him had changed.

When he reached the cathedral...

Jonathan waited alone.

Without a word, he handed Gabriel a pistol.

"There's one final task."

Gabriel accepted it.

"What is it?"

Jonathan smiled.

"Tomorrow morning..."

"You're going to the hospital."

Gabriel looked down at the weapon.

"And then?"

Jonathan's voice was calm.

"You'll kill Amelia Sterling."

Silence filled the cathedral.

Jonathan stepped closer.

"I raised you."

"I trusted you."

"Now prove your loyalty."

Gabriel slowly looked up.

His face revealed nothing.

But inside...

A battle had already begun.

For the first time in his life...

He wondered whether Elizabeth Sterling had been right.

Maybe...

A child really could choose a different future.
